Tips For Decluttering Your Wardrobe

When it comes to clutter one of the first areas that comes to mind is my wardrobe. I have so many clothes... too many clothes! A lot of them don't even fit anymore. Others are damaged or stained. Some I don't even like.

Despite all that, my wardrobe is busting at the seams. My wardrobe is therefore a high priority on my decluttering list. It's time to get rid of the clothes that no longer fit and those that are just not loved anymore.

Decluttering clothes is also one of the most daunting tasks on my declutter list. I dream about having an organised wardrobe that makes putting together outfits super easy but getting there can be easier said than done. I know I'm not the only one with an emotional attachment to my clothes!

How To Declutter Your Wardrobe

Take everything out.

Pulling it all out makes it easier to see everything you have and decided what gets to go back into the wardrobe.

If you're anything like me, you'll probably discover clothes you haven't seen in years and may have even forgotten about entirely.

It also makes it easier to see how many of each item you own. There's only so many pairs of jeans you need. Check for duplicates and get rid of any excess.

Clean inside wardrobe.

Start with a clean slate. Now that your wardrobe is completely empty it's time to give it a good clean. Grab some cleaning products and get rid of any dust.

Sort clothes into piles.

Divide all your clothes into separate piles; keep, donate, throw away.

If needed create another pile for maybes. This is the stuff you're not sure about at the moment. You don't love it enough to make it a keep but at the same time you're not ready to let it go yet. You can come back to the maybe pile later on and make a decision then. This takes the pressure off.

Organised storage.

Hang clothes by category/colour order and use closet organisers. This makes it easier to find what you're looking for.

Store special clothes separately.

If you only wear it for brief periods of the year, e.g. Christmas jumpers or for special occasions e.g. a fancy party dress, it doesn't need to be taking up quality real estate in your wardrobe all year round.

A full wardrobe declutter like this should be done at least once a year. You'll be surprised at how quickly it can get out of control again.

You may also find that your style/size changes over time and so some items just don't work for you anymore.
