The Virtual Book Tour for The Pendant: How You Can Help #SupportAuthors #NewRelease

As you will know if you've been following the blog or on social media, The Pendant will be released on 1st February 2017. To celebrate the launch I'm going to be doing a virtual book tour from 1st February to 10th February.

How you can help:

1) You can host me on your blog. I'm looking for hosts to post a book showcase, interview, or review. I have a media kit (including a rafflecopter giveaway), and lots of graphics I can send you to make hosting super easy. Please email me for the materials and let me know when and where you will be hosting. I'll obviously be promoting all the tour stops and so will bring traffic to your site.

2) Share about the release on social media. To make it even easier, I've created some click to tweets, so all you have to do is click to share on Twitter:

#AStoryAWeek Update: Weeks 2 & 3

As you may recall, I'm taking part in the A Story A Week challenge this year where the goal is to write 52 short stories by the end of the year.

Here's an update for weeks 2 and 3:

In case you missed Week 1 you find that here:
http://www.jolinsdell.com/2017/01/astoryaweek-update-week-1.html

So far I'm loving this challenge. I feel really motivated to write. Plotting, researching, writing, and editing a story in just one week is a lot of work, but it's also very satisfying.

By being more productive, I feel inspired to be more productive. In fact, I've managed to get a lot of other tasks done too. It's like I've got a productivity jet pack on ;) Whilst I know it will be hard to keep up this pace all year through, I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Are you doing the A Story A Week challenge too? How's it going so far? Are you doing a different challenge this year? Let me know your goals.

A Look At Audiobooks: Do you listen to books?

Post updated on 9/9/2018

Audiobooks

I've been thinking about audiobooks lately. I see people all the time on social media making comments about how they catch up with reading whilst doing other stuff by listening to the audio version of the book. A common example being when they're in the car. I've not gotten into audiobooks yet myself but it is something I've thought about trying out.

[Update] I love audiobooks! My favourite time to listen to them is when I'm doing the ironing. A great way to pass the time whilst doing an otherwise boring task.

Amazon's Audible program

Amazon, as with most things these days, has their own audiobook publishing program. "Audible is the publisher and distributor of the world’s largest selection of digital audiobooks and spoken word content. Audible customers can listen anytime and anywhere they like to professionally-narrated audiobooks across a wide range of genres, including best sellers, new releases, sci fi, romances, classics, and more."

This is what you get in their offer:

Audible Free Trial benefits:
• Get two free audiobooks to start -- after 30 days, get 1 book each month for $14.95/month
• Get 30% off the price of additional audiobook purchases
• Cancel anytime. Your books are yours to keep, even if you cancel.

Audible Gold Membership benefits:
• One audiobook per month for $14.95/mo
• 30% off the price of additional audiobook purchases
• Cancel anytime. A member’s books are theirs to keep, even if they cancel.

I've also thought about making my own books available as audiobooks. Given the obvious popularity, and growing market for this format. Is this something you, as readers, would be interested in?

What about pricing? How much would you be willing to pay, on average, for an audiobook?

Audible is clearly an industry giant, but what other companies do you use for purchasing audiobooks?

Thanks for your feedback.

Before we go any further though, let's just take a moment to admire how gorgeous the book cover is:

Book Giveaway: The Royal Gift by Drae Box #giveaway #books

Pretty awesome isn't it?

About the book:

If everyone you grew up with were relying on you to save them, would you be able to do it? Thrust into the deep end, teen Aldora Leoma has to do exactly that. Her village under attack, she is asked by the king to locate the just stolen Dagger of Protection – one of six Weapons of Protection made centuries earlier to protect others. With nobody else near enough to protect her home, Aldora can’t say no. Aided by a talking prince of the cats and a law enforcer hunting a murderer, failure is not an option.

I read The Royal Gift towards the end of 2016. Here's my review:

#AStoryAWeek Update: Week 1

In order to make this my most productive writing year yet, I decided to take part in the A Story A Week challenge. The goal is to write a complete short story for every week of the year (a total of 52 stories by the end of the year).

This is a summary of how week 1 went:

This week I wrote episode 1 in the KOSMOS series. This book is called The Pendant and kicks off this serial, YA, time travel series.

About the book:

Matt Smith is a teenage boy with his fair share of problems; a strained relationship with his mum, a bully that won't leave him in peace, and a crush on a girl that doesn't know he exists. Just when he thinks life couldn't get any more complicated he finds a strange pendant, that throws him into an adventure of a life time.

Why I'm doing this challenge:

I'm really excited about this challenge, and think it will help me grow as a writer. Doing something a lot is a good way of getting better at doing it.

It will definitely help make me a more productive writer. In order to reach my goal of a story a week, I need to be writing every day. Something I always say I'll do but often get side-tracked by other tasks. Technically I do write every day. I write articles, and blog posts. What I'm talking about here though is working on writing all those story ideas I have.

And lastly, I love a good challenge. This particular one is quite ambitious, and it's not going to be easy... something that just makes me want to do it more. I want to prove to myself that I can.

Are you doing the A Story A Week challenge? How did your first week go?
Update: New Books, ARCs, and a Visit to the Library

I'm back to filming on my old laptop as my Mac died on New Years Eve :( I have loads of bookish news to share with you all though and so just couldn't wait for when (and even if) I ever manage to fix my Mac. So old school it is...

Actually Windows Movie Maker isn't really that bad. I used it for years before upgrading to my Mac. I just love iMovie and am still mourning my loss.

Anyway, 2017 is here and with it lots of books to get excited about. Some of the ones I talk about in this video are older releases but that doesn't make it any less exciting that I'm finally going to get around to reading them ;) There are some new releases too that I have ARC copies of and am rather excited about.

Books mentioned:

Fifty Shades of Grey http://amzn.to/2hVSp2m

The Bestseller Code http://amzn.to/2iVghVx

What books are you excited about reading this year?
Holiday BookTubeAThon 2016 Wrap Up

From 29th-31st December 2016 I took part in the Holiday BookTubeAThon challenge. Here's a wrap up of what I read and what I thought about them.

Sweet Tricks by Maggie Dallen

Holiday BookTubeAThon 2016 Wrap Up
I picked this book for the first challenge "Read a book with your favourite colour on the cover". My favourite colour is blue so this was perfect. It was also a nice short, quick read, and therefore ideal for BookTubeAThon.

About the book:

Tabitha and her friends are ready for a change--they're fresh out of college and ready for a new start, which means saying goodbye to their bad habits when it comes to men. For Tabitha that means swearing off bad boys once and for all. But that's easier said than done when she finds herself sharing an apartment with Jack, the bad boy to end all bad boys. Jack has an annoying tendency to come to her rescue, make her laugh, and give her kisses that leave her begging for more. As if their instant attraction doesn't make staying away hard enough, why does her new bad boy have to be so good?

My rating: 3 stars. I'll be uploading a video review soon.

A Christmas Kiss by Susan Hatler

Holiday BookTubeAThon 2016 Wrap UpI got flexible with the second challenge "Read a book in a genre you discovered this year" and opted for a book by an author I discovered this year instead, as I already read a wide variety of genres and didn't really discover a new genre during 2016.

During 2016 I read a lot of books by Susan Hatler. She is awesome at writing short romance. Anyway, she released a new book A Christmas Kiss just before the holidays. This is an addition to the Kissed by the Bay series. As I read several books from the series this year it seemed like the perfect choice.

About the book:

Harper Avery is a jaded divorce attorney who loves helping her clients move on to better things. After all, they’ve struggled enough being in an unhappy marriage. When one client’s soon-to-be ex-husband suddenly says he wants a second chance with his wife, Harper’s dubious, certain that her client is just going to get hurt again.

Despite his career as a divorce attorney, Gabriel Hart still believes that love can work miracles. Sure, there are no guarantees, but he totally supports his client’s efforts to reconcile with his wife—even if it means Gabriel has to go head-to-head with Harper to keep her from ruining the couple’s chances.

With the holidays approaching, husband and wife set out to see if they can work through their issues, while Harper decides to spend the long Christmas weekend at her friend’s cabin in Lake Tahoe. Only when she gets there, someone is already occupying her last-minute rental—Gabriel Hart. Both refuse to give up their holiday retreat. Will their adversarial working relationship make for a stressful weekend? Or will the magic of Christmas sprinkle them with a love that can beat the odds?

My rating: 4 stars. I'll be uploading a video review soon.

Buy the book: http://amzn.to/2ikAnsA

Jenna's Story by Skye Hegyes

Holiday BookTubeAThon 2016 Wrap Up
I was gifted a copy of this book by the author early this year and have been dying to read it, so it was an easy choice for the third challenge "Read a book your were gifted".

About the book:

Jenna has many secrets; her father disappeared before she was born, her mother ignores her, her step-father abuses her, and the boy she's had a crush on for years doesn't know she exists.

A school assignment may be the end of all her secrets though, including her biggest secret of all -- her ability to turn into a wolf. With her stress levels rising though a new ability rears it head to make her life much harder.

She must learn to control her rising power because if she doesn't, she chances losing all her secrets and quite possibly her life.

My rating: Unfortunately I didn't get round to reading this one. It is high on my TBR list for 2017 though.

Buy the book: http://amzn.to/2ioNICH

So I didn't finish reading all 3 books, but I did finish another of the books I had started before the challenge. I'll be uploading my review for Three Blonde Mice by Jane Heller (http://amzn.to/2iW90Ek) soon.

F.Y.I. If any of you want to send me an Amazon gift card this year so I can buy more books, I won't say no ;)

Goodbye 2016, Hello 2017!

2016 has come to an end. I can't say that I'm all that sorry to see it go. I am however very grateful to have reached the end of it, as many did not. Over this year we lost so many talents. As an 80's girl a huge part of my youth passed on during 2016.

Sadly my MacBook Pro also died on New Year's Eve. Not a nice way to finish a year, and definitely not a good way to start a new one. I'm hoping that I can extract all the files so I don't lose any of the work I did on it. Fingers crossed.

Luckily I still have my old laptop but, as you can imagine, it's just not the same. I'm still trying to work out which programs I no longer have and how I can work around the issue.

On a more positive note, as I backed up my novels by emailing them to myself as I was writing them, I do have copies of those *sighs with relief*

I don't want this message to be a sad one though and so I won't dwell on what was lost. Instead I'd like to focus on what's to come. That said, 2017 please be awesome and don't take any more of my idols.

P.S. a new Mac would be great.

2017

So what do you have planned for 2017? How are you going to make 2017 your best year yet?

Writing

I'm hoping to make 2017 my most productive year yet, and will be starting it with a bang. In January I'll be taking part in the STORYSTORM challenge hosted by Tara Lazar (You can register here https://taralazar.com/2016/12/27/storystorm-2017-registration-is-open/ if you'd like to take part too)

I'm an official participant of #STORYSTORM 2017

For the challenge I'll be brainstorming, outlining, and first drafting a new book each day. I've picked out the projects I want to develop already from my ever-growing list of book ideas. It'll be a mixture of children's books, non fiction, and novels. I won't get bored that's for sure ;)

I'm also going to be writing a serial fiction called KOSMOS to be released in 2017. I'm really excited about this new project, and can't wait to introduce you all to the cast of characters.

I'll be sharing the cover reveal for the first book in the KOSMOS series The Pendant with you next week so make sure you check back on 9th January for an exclusive glimpse at the cover. Did I mention how excited I am about this series?! ;)

I'm also going to be doing the A Story A Week which has the goal of writing 52 short stories in 2017 (one a week).

Book Covers

I'm working on some new pre-made book cover designs and will be launching them soon. Make sure you sign up at http://www.jolinsdell.com/p/premade.html as a Book Cover VIP for first dibs on new designs at discounted prices.

I'm also happy to make custom book covers for both ebooks and print. So get in touch if you'd like to hire me.

In conclusion

My 2017 is set to be a very productive year, and I hope yours will be too. I'll be setting up a new ARC team later this month for you lovely people that can't wait to review my books.

The aim of the ARC team is to collect as many reviews as possible for my new releases. Not everyone will be selected to be part of the ARC team, but those that are will be sent a free advance copy of my new releases for review. I'll share more detail of how it works, and how to be part of it later this month, along with info about how to sign up.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you again for all your support. Whether it's reading my books, hiring me for illustration work/graphic design, or just being part of my cheerleader team as I throw myself into yet another project, you guys ROCK! I really appreciate your support.
