Article 13 and What It Means For Creatives

So, I came across a video on YouTube about a new European copyright legislation that is currently being decided. Whilst I do think protecting copyright is super important I have to agree that this particular idea would cause serious damage to many creatives and their businesses.
If this legislation gets approved it will dramatically change the way everyone uses the internet (not just for those of us in the Europe).
I'm a creative. I use the internet to reach an international audience. This is super important to me as I live in Italy but most of my clients/readers/followers are from other countries.
I use YouTube for my video content. You can find my YouTube channel here if you're not already a subscriber. This won't just effect YouTube though. It will effect many forms of user created content uploaded to other platforms across the internet.

What is Article 13?
If Article 13 goes ahead it will completely change how content is shared on the internet. It could mean that we can no longer share our content. It could also mean that, even if we can, our audience will be limited.

European policymakers are still negotiating Article 13 and so there is still a chance that something can be done to improve on the final version.

It is certainly a worry. There are far more concerning things on the internet that they should be focusing on eliminating.
ReplyDeleteThe general idea is great. I love that they want to protect people's copyright. I just don't think this is a good way to do it. Given the current wording of the legislation most sites will block content to protect themselves. YouTube stated they would have to do that, and I don't think they would be the only ones. The impact of this legislation would be huge, as it would apply to other social media sites too... including blog platforms.

ReplyDeleteThere's been a lot of mixed comments about it all on social media. I found this article at http://www.netopia.eu/copyright-blown-proportion-great-youtube-pivot/ that takes a look from the other side. It does raise some excellent points.
DeleteYouTube made lots of changes to their monetisation program this year, and upset a lot of people along the way.
"You can apply for monetisation at any time. To be reviewed, all channels need at least 4,000 watch hours in the previous 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. This requirement allows us to properly evaluate new channels and helps protect the creator community."
Whilst they said they wanted to help protect the creator community what they really did was take out all the smaller YouTubers and limit creators. To go into all the details would need a whole different post (maybe even a series of posts), but the point is YouTube aren't without fault, and now they are under threat from this new legislation. Article 13 would have a huge impact on their profits.
What concerns me most is that this isn't just about YouTube. This law would have an effect across the board. The extent of which is still unclear.
Will this law be international?I haven't heard of it before. I need to go and read more about it xx
ReplyDeleteIt will have an international effect. The law itself regards the EU but it will change what people in other countries see, and who can see their content.
