First Lines Fridays

Books: First Lines Fridays 25th July 2025

It’s that time again—First Lines Fridays is here to put your bookish instincts to the test. Each week, I post the opening lines of a book, keeping the title and author a secret until the end. Will you recognise it straight away, or discover something entirely new to add to your reading list?

Disclosure: The FTC Disclosure Provision is a law that requires influencers to disclose when they are being paid to promote a product or service. So please know that if I'm not making money through affiliate links/sponsored content on the post you're currently reading, it's an oversight on my part and will be corrected soon. Read the full disclosure about all the legal stuff here.

I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

I never thought I’d be that wife. The one who discovers her husband has found interest in a much younger woman. It’s such a cliché, and one I never thought would happen to me. Yet, here I am, forced to accept that the man who claimed to love me is lying to me. Cheating on me. Betraying me. Some women in my position would pursue a divorce. But that’s not an option for me. I refuse to start all over again. For years, I endured one horrible date after another in my endless search for a husband. Now that I’ve finally found him, I am not giving him up.

Book synopsis for My Husband's Mistress by Rowen Chambers

I don’t want a divorce. I want revenge.

I never imagined I’d be living out the cliché of my husband having an affair with a much younger woman. And yet it happened, mere months after my wedding.

It’s not my husband’s fault. It’s his mistress who did this. She lured him. Tempted him. Turned him against me.

But not for long. I won’t allow it. I’m going to get rid of this woman. For good.

I didn’t want it to end this way, but my husband’s mistress has given me no choice. She took something that wasn’t hers and now she must be punished.

She messed with the wrong woman. She has no idea what I’m capable of.

But she will soon. And by then… it’ll be too late.

The book synopsis for Four Cold Months by K.J. Kalis

Book cover Four Cold Months by K.J. Kalis

She’s been missing for four months. The ransom makes no sense. And Detective Max Grady is running out of time.

Max Grady has spent years trying to outrun his past—a childhood defined by violence, a secret buried so deep it nearly destroyed him. But when he learns Macy Chandler has been missing for four months, the guilt and rage he thought he’d buried come roaring back.

Macy has vanished before. Her family thought this was just another one of her unexplained absences. They were wrong.

Now, a chilling ransom demand surfaces—one that her family can’t possibly fulfill. With no leads and the clock ticking, Max is pulled into a case that hits far too close to home.

He’s not alone. His partner, Cassie Reynolds, is everything Max isn’t—calm, methodical, and determined to keep him grounded as the investigation spirals. Together, they’ll have to navigate false leads, fractured truths, and a predator who knows exactly how to exploit Max’s darkest scars.

Because for Max, this case isn’t just about saving a life.

It’s about redemption.

Perfect for fans of L.T. Ryan, Michael Connelly, and James Patterson, Four Cold Months is a heart-pounding thriller about the past that binds us and the choices that set us free.

Review

4 stars

Discussing Four Cold Months by K.J. Kalis

My Review Summary: Four Cold Months

Key Takeaways from the video:

  • I read Four Cold Months as part of the Clock Reading Challenge, where this one covered number four on my list.
  • It’s the first book in the Detective Max Grady series, and I gave it four stars — though honestly, it’s more of a three and a half for me.
  • I didn’t like the main character, Max Grady, at least not at first. He’s quite unlikeable, which made it frustrating — but despite that, I couldn’t stop reading, which says a lot.
  • The story follows a missing woman case that turns into a kidnapping, with plenty of angst, tension, and mystery.
  • Grady clearly has a lot of personal baggage, and I think as the series goes on, we’ll get to understand him better.
  • Some plot points felt unresolved, but I’m guessing those will be picked up in later books in the series.
  • I liked how the story explored family ties, responsibility, and difficult choices, which made me stop and think — that’s something I always appreciate in a book.
  • It definitely raises interesting discussion points, so it would work well for a book club read.
  • Even though parts of it annoyed me, I found it addictive — one of those books that gets under your skin and makes you want to see how it all ends.
  • The writing keeps you engaged, and there’s a good balance of suspense and emotional depth.
  • I already own book three in the series, so I’ll definitely be continuing — though I’ll need to get book two first.
  • I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys crime thrillers or police procedurals with complex characters and moral dilemmas.
  • Overall, a solid start to the series, even if it left me with mixed feelings — frustrating at times, but ultimately a compelling and thought-provoking read.

A good choice for people looking for: crime fiction series, crime mystery books for adults, detective series, books with morally grey characters, psychological crime thrillers, character-driven mystery books, crime novels about family and secrets, thought-provoking crime novels.

Quotes from Four Cold Months by K.J. Kalis

The screaming never stopped. Never. Max pressed his hands over his ears as hard as he could as he sat on the edge of the bed. It only muffled the sound a little, the ear-piercing screams from his terrified mother and the low guttural yells from his brother only seeming slightly farther away, punctuated by intermittent growls and shouts from their father.

One of the youngest officers to be promoted to the detective unit, the police brass had quickly learned two things about Max when he’d finished the Academy. Number one, he was a quick study, wickedly smart with a nearly photographic memory. Number two, he was better off not dealing with people. Managing people’s emotions, not to mention his own, wasn't exactly his strong suit.

Grady had once read that people who were in physical pain had terrible personal skills, the condition of their physical body causing them to lose any semblance of nicety or manners.

“My wife, she hasn’t been home in a while. This morning, I got a call, and it seems that instead of her just being gone, she’s been kidnapped.”“And what makes you think that?” Grady said, narrowing his eyes. Noah pushed the box he’d been carrying toward Grady. “Take a look inside.”

“I hate it when people call me Max,” Grady grunted. “That is your name.”“No, that was my father’s name,” Grady said firmly.

Eventually, somehow things would end — either they would let her go, she would escape, someone would rescue her or, she’d die in the process. There weren’t that many options.

Somehow, the way Cassie said things always sounded more pleasant, like it was the Disney version of whatever Grady was saying.

“Don’t worry about it. Just take a breath and try to tell me what happened.” It actually wasn’t all right. Having the recording would have made everything easier. There was nothing about this case that was easy, though.

Macy shivered. There were many good things about being a professor of literature, but one of the bad things was that she knew her imagination could run wild after living in the world of fiction for so long.

Book Review Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood

Books: My thoughts about Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood.

Every now and then, a book comes along that surprises you in the best possible way. Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood is one such read. With its clever blend of wit, heart, and just the right amount of drama, this novel took me on an unexpectedly touching journey. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I first picked it up, but I found myself quickly drawn in by the characters and the emotional depth behind their seemingly light-hearted story. Though not without its minor flaws, Least Likely Two turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable read, one that earns a solid four stars from me. Let’s dive into what makes this story stand out.

About the Book

The book synopsis for Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood

Book cover Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood

He thinks they're soulmates. She thinks they're enemies. What could go wrong?

Hollister

When I walk into my twenty-fifth high school reunion, I have one mission: to prove to Ben Rose, my co-valedictorian and nemesis, that I've finally made it. I've got a high-profile PR client, a kickass daughter in college, and my two best friends at my side.

Suck it, Ben Rose.

Ben

There's only one person on my mental highlight reel from high school, the magnificent Hollister Moran. Bombshell redhead with a punk rock aesthetic and a beautiful brain.

The only problem? She hates me. Always has. To have a future with her, I have to confront the mistakes and secrets of the past, Melville High School, class of 1998. Wish me luck.

Least Likely Two is book one in the new seasoned romance series Better Than Ever. Love and laughter don't end at forty!

Review

4 Stars

Discussing Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood

My Review Summary: Least Likely Two

Key Takeaways from the video:

  • I read Least Likely Two for my Clock Reading Challenge, ticking off number two on the list.

  • I ended up giving it four stars — I genuinely really enjoyed it.

  • The story follows Hollister and Ben, who went to school together and have a long-standing rivalry that goes all the way back to when they were competing to be valedictorian.

  • Years later, they reconnect at a school reunion, and Hollister starts to realise Ben might not be the person she remembered.

  • There’s plenty of banter and chemistry between them, and although they’re complete opposites in some ways, they also have a lot more in common than they thought.

  • It’s a great example of a second-chance romance — full of ups and downs, humour, and heart.

  • What I particularly liked is that both characters are a bit older, coming into middle age and dealing with real-life challenges like parenting and past regrets, which gives the story more depth.

  • I found the “yellow list” (YOLO list) idea from Hollister really inspiring — a list of 12 things to do each year, one for each month. I loved the concept so much that I’ve decided to start my own YOLO list! It’s such a fun and positive idea — more specific than a bucket list and focused on making the most of everyday life.

  • The book itself has brilliant banter, relatable characters, and lots of warmth.

  • If you enjoy romance books, especially second-chance stories or ones featuring mature characters, I’d definitely recommend checking this one out.

  • Overall, it’s a fun, feel-good read with a lovely message about rediscovery, connection, and living life to the fullest.

A good choice for people looking for: second chance romance, romantic fiction for adults, contemporary romance, middle-aged romance story, romance books about reunions, romance books with older characters, second chance love stories, enemies to lovers romance books, books about rediscovering love, books that inspire self-growth, books about living life to the fullest.

Quotes from Least Likely Two by Jill Westwood

Getting knocked up my senior year of college was never part of my plan, but life rarely cares about such things as plans.

I briefly considered what I’d said earlier about networking. Dancing with a person in a bear suit might not be the best way to gain clients. Then again, when did I ever let what other people thought stop me?

In my family, you saved moments of despondency for closets, bathrooms, or solo car rides. Public weeping or gnashing of teeth, even with only one witness, was harshly frowned upon.

I arranged a pillow behind my back and settled in to give her the mom once-over. Were there dark circles under her eyes? Enough meat on her bones? Was she clenching her jaw like she did when she was stressed out? Fortunately, my mom radar told me that she seemed all right. You tend to know a person after living with them for eighteen years. That was one reason I hated living apart from her—I couldn’t do my daily Zoe check-in. Sure, I could call or text with her, but that wasn’t the same as laying my eyes on my baby girl.

Zoe grabbed a handful of the kettle corn from one of the bowls I’d set out on the table as hors d’oeuvres, along with chocolate-covered peanuts and Swedish fish. Don’t let anyone say I’m not classy.

I found my daughter’s sexuality fascinating. At seventeen she explained to me that she was open to dating anyone, that it was the individual not their gender that attracted her. As someone who had her first crush on a boy in kindergarten and never deviated from that path, I couldn’t totally understand what it felt like to be Zoe, but I was happy for her. She knew who she was and didn’t seem to have many hang-ups about it. I liked to think my parenting had some small part in her self-confidence, but in truth she came out of the womb knowing her own mind.

That’s the thing about motherhood. Everyone talks about the challenges of babies who won’t sleep and salty teenagers who rebel, but they never tell you that the hardest part is letting them go.

He would mock YOLO, and people who mocked YOLO were not allowed on my adventures.

He was like a bad pair of underwear. Even when I couldn’t see him, he still chafed.

“I understand completely. But a little fear is what keeps us feeling young and alive. When you stop taking chances, you stop living, right?”

We began to move, swaying back and forth, and I could tell she’d become distracted. So had I. Having my hands on her body was leading to thoughts that weren’t helpful in dance class. It was like I was back in middle school in my first slow dance with a girl, hoping I didn’t get a woody from sheer proximity to a female.

It was as if my libido had been hibernating and now remembered its purpose in life.

Bridget glared at both of us. “I was trying to attract the right men.” She swiped through her phone to open the dating app. “But you might be right. The last person to contact me said he ran my profile by his spiritual guru, and that’s how he knew we’d be a great match.”

“I’m serious. It’s not too late. And beware of STDs. I hear those are running rampant through the senior community.”“I’m not a senior, you little smartass! You just told me I’m still young.”“You’re never too young or old for chlamydia.”

“Being helpful, my mother taught me, is doing what someone else needs you to do. Not doing what you want to do.

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

Professor Matthew Stanford cursed under his breath. Should he get off and run? It was only another mile until his home stop opposite the train station, but the bus was edging through the rush hour early-evening London traffic, barely outpacing the pedestrians. He hit redial and waited, counting the rings until it flipped to his son’s voicemail. ‘Hey, this is Alfie. Here’s the beep. Knock yourself out.’ Still no answer. Matthew stared at the last text messages from his son. I had a missed call from Mum. I can’t get hold of her. He tried his son again.
