First Lines Fridays

Books: First Lines Fridays 10th October 2025

Welcome to another edition of First Lines Fridays, where each week I share the opening lines of a mystery book – no title, no author, just the words themselves. It’s a chance to test whether a book can hook you from the start, without the influence of a familiar name or a flashy cover.

So, would you read on based on this week’s first line? Let’s find out...

I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

Greta Olsson grabbed the bucket and left the kitchen, and fifteen minutes later, she was dead. The bucket contained ice and a hefty champagne bottle. Her head contained her hopes and dreams. Why would it not? Although her life was unspectacular, she knew she had much to look forward to. After all, she was only twenty-four and healthy. Relatively. A little overweight, maybe. Nothing a couple of hours in the gym couldn’t sort. She hated the stiff white blouse and baggy trousers her employer insisted she wear, plus many of the people she had to serve, but she could grin and bear it. Waitressing was not forever.
