The book synopsis for Merry Little Vengeance by Joan De La Haye
Most people unwrap presents at Christmas—I’m busy wrapping bodies.
This year, though, my usual routine got personal. Going home for the holidays wasn’t exactly my choice, but when you’re a hitwoman with a complicated family and a past that refuses to stay buried, things tend to get... eventful.
Let’s just say some skeletons should stay buried; others demand justice. And me? I deliver it.
If you’re into thrillers spiked with snark, a touch of holiday mayhem, and a heroine who’s equal parts ruthless and relatable, Merry Little Vengeance will make your season bright—just not for those who prefer their holidays warm and fuzzy.

My Review Summary:
Key Takeaways from the video:
A Solid Five-Star Read: This book absolutely ticked all the boxes for me. It’s a short, Christmas-themed story, but it’s a far cry from your usual festive fluff.
The Ultimate "Anti-Heroine": I loved the main character. She’s a badass, ruthless hitwoman who spends her Christmas wrapping bodies instead of presents. She is exactly the kind of "grey" character I adore—relatable yet totally lethal.
Festive Snark and Thrills: If you’re tired of sugary holiday romances, this is perfect. It’s got a brilliant snarky comedy element and a thriller vibe that makes it stand out from the crowd.
Left Me Wanting More: Because it was so short, I’m now desperately hunting for full-length novels by this author. I’d love to see this character in a long-running series; she has so much depth.
Recommendations Wanted: I really enjoyed this specific niche. If you know of any other books that mix Christmas settings with hitmen and dark humour, please do let me know!
N.B. I've since discovered that this is the first book in the Holiday Quick Kills series. So far there are 14 books in the series.
Quotes from Merry Little Vengeanceby Joan De La Haye
I have a rule or a code: no matter how annoying the kid is or how stupid a woman has been in her choice of husband or profession, I won’t kill them, no matter how good the money is. But if you have a guy you want taken out, I’m your girl as long as he’s earned that bloody end, of course. I’m not a complete monster.
And yes, I was diagnosed as having a borderline personality disorder, but I’m not a full-on psychopath. My disorder was brought on by trauma, which is why I only kill bad guys. I like getting payback for those who can’t do it themselves, and yes, I do get paid extremely well for doing something I really, really enjoy. Don’t judge.
Killing someone is, in some ways, a little like seduction. You need to take your time. Let them come to you. Make them feel like they’re in control. And when the moment is right, you take their breath away.

Books: My thoughts about King of Christmas by J.E. Rowney
If you grew up obsessed with those classic "choose your own adventure" stories, you are in for a nostalgic—yet decidedly more grown-up—treat. Today, I’m sharing my thoughts on a book that combines the interactive fun of my childhood with the dark, chilling atmosphere of a modern psychological thriller: King of Christmas by J.E. Rowney. Set in the eerie, snow-covered town of Pine Hollow, this isn't your typical festive read; it’s a high-stakes mystery where you take the lead as a journalist hunting down an urban legend. Get ready to step into the shoes of the protagonist, because in this story, the path to the truth depends entirely on the choices you make.

Not every path leads to the truth. But every one brings you closer to him.
Eight missing children. One urban legend. A town that stopped asking questions.
They call him the King of Christmas—a red-suited figure said to haunt Pine Hollow, taking children who’ve done wrong. Always on Christmas Eve. Always leaving behind a trail of footprints in the snow… and a single silver bell for every home that's lost a child.
Jenny Matthews, now a Boston journalist, returns to the snowbound town she fled decades ago to investigate the disappearances. Officially, she’s here to write about the legend. Unofficially, she’s chasing something much closer to home.
The police won’t help. The town won’t talk. And this year a new family will receive a silver bell.
In this unique psychological thriller book, you decide what Jenny does next.
Will she uncover the truth—or become the next to vanish? Will she expose the legend—or step straight into it? Will she find redemption—or lose everything trying?
KING OF CHRISTMAS is a uniquely immersive Choose Your Own Path psychological thriller where your decisions shape the story. Every choice matters. Some truths are buried deep. Some paths lead to justice. Others to regret.
Choose carefully. The King of Christmas is watching.
A Nostalgic Concept: I was incredibly excited to receive a free copy of this from NetGalley because it’s an adult "choose your own adventure" psychological thriller—a format I absolutely loved as a young girl.
The Setting and Plot: The story is set in the snowy town of Pine Hollow, where eight children have gone missing over the years. The mystery is tied to a chilling urban legend about the "King of Christmas" who reportedly abducts children who misbehave.
Personal Stakes: It follows the protagonist, Jenny Matthews, a Boston journalist returning to her hometown to uncover the truth. The case is deeply personal for her, as her own sister was one of the children who vanished.
Interactive Gameplay: As the reader, I stepped into Jenny’s shoes to make pivotal decisions. The story changes based on who I choose to talk to and where I decide to go, allowing for multiple unique reading experiences.
Addressing the Editing: I’ve noticed some critics mentioning a confusing gender-swap error in the early editing. While I can see why that might bother some, it didn't impact my enjoyment; it’s a minor slip-up that I expect will be rectified.
Final Verdict: If you enjoy the tension of a psychological thriller combined with the interactive fun of choosing your own path, I highly recommend checking this one out.
A good choice for people looking for: Christmas themed books, Thrillers, Holiday Mystery, Psychological Thrillers, Choose Your Own Adventure books.

And that wraps up my best reads of 2025! It might not have been my strongest reading year — I didn’t get through as many books as I’d hoped, and there weren’t quite as many five-star standouts as usual. My health made it a bit of a challenge to keep up with my reading goals, but the stories I did manage to finish truly made an impact and stayed with me long after I turned the final page.
Here’s hoping 2026 brings better health, more reading time, and plenty of unforgettable stories to get lost in — ideally with a good cup of tea in hand.

Quotes from Nine Minutes Eleven Secondsby L.V. Pederson
She never knew what hit her. Or if she did, she only knew it for a second, two at the most. In any event, not long enough for her to break stride, never mind jump out of the way or do anything to save herself, beyond looking over her shoulder and widening her eyes in terror.
“This will be the best thing that ever happened to you!” Dr. Katz’s parting words echoed in Madison’s head as the elevator came to a stop and the doors glided open. “Third floor,” the car’s disembodied voice intoned. “Global Marketing Group— Executive Level.” Madison stepped off the elevator into a small, deserted lobby. The only sign of life was an LED video wall silently shimmering, its pristine shade of eggshell white perfectly matching the adjacent walls while offsetting a colorful corporate logo: K-N-O-W. The red, white, and blue 3D letters rotated in a playful, off-kilter fashion above the company mantra: “We Know Everything.”
Dr. Harris stopped writing and paused a moment before he answered. “Just so I’m clear, Madison, what you’re suggesting is not only did Mohamed Attar not die on 9/ 11, as the official report concluded, but, two decades later, this man, who carried out the worst terrorist attack in American history, is not only alive, he’s hiding in plain sight, in the United States, working as a senior executive at one of the big tech firms right here in Silicon Valley.” His words, which he said without any hint of sarcasm or irony, hung in the air.
Madison stepped inside her apartment and locked the deadbolt. She stood there for a moment, letting her eyes adjust. Her precious collection of files and clippings spread everywhere were now all but swallowed up by the gloomy shadows.
The image was so grainy it was hard to make out the girl’s features. But for Madison, it didn’t stop her from recognizing that little face. The little girl was her.
“I think someone’s watching me.” This got Will’s attention. He sat back down and leaned in close. “Really? Like who?” “I don’t know— but I can feel it.”
It was hard for Niles to tell if his superior was being sarcastic or really meant it. He decided not to chance it. “Thank you, sir.”
Niles took his time responding. “Well now, technically, the government doesn’t kidnap folks. We just remove them from circulation.”
He had kept this file all these years for one simple reason: one could never be too careful when dealing with these sorts of people.
“This isn’t DC— we don’t have that kind of manpower—” “Then find it, Agent Fox!” Niles exploded. “This is all-goddamn-hands-on-deck here! Bring in the goddamn Boy Scouts if you have to, I don’t care— just get it done!”
Will continued taking in the vastness of the celestial display. “Did you ever stop to think that, in the grand scheme of things, our life doesn’t matter— I mean, not one little bit?” “All the time,” Madison replied flatly. “Until one day it does.” He turned to regard Madison. “Then there’s no telling what you’re capable of. ”
