Blogging: How To Do A Content Audit For Your Blog

If you’ve been blogging for a while, you may have noticed that some of your posts aren’t performing as well as they used to. Or maybe your blog’s content feels a bit out of date. This is where a content audit comes in handy.

A content audit is a process of reviewing and evaluating your existing blog content to ensure it’s aligned with your goals, optimized for SEO, and serving your reader’s needs. By regularly auditing your blog content, you can identify opportunities to improve, update, and repurpose older posts, boost traffic, and enhance your overall blog strategy.

As I mentioned in my September Wrap Up post, I'm currently doing a full site audit of this website. This is a huge task with several different elements that need to be taken into consideration.

As promised, I'm going to be taking you along with me on this journey and sharing information and tips to help you do your own blog audit.

For this post we're going to be concentrating on the content audit part.

What is a content audit?

To put it simply, a content audit is an analysis of blog posts and landing pages. It's looking at which pages need to be updated, rewritten or deleted. It also gives a good indication of the sort of content that's doing well and therefore the types of posts you should be doing more of in the future.

A content audit will show you what content is missing, what is outdated, what is under preforming and what is your top content.

The Benefits of a Content Audit

There are lots of benefits to doing a content audit for your blog.

It helps make sure your blog is up to date.
It shows you what types of content do best with your audience.
It improves the overall navigation of the site.
It reduces errors on site.
It gives you a clearer idea of the sort of site you want.
It helps improve general SEO of the site.
It can help your search engine ranking.
It can help improve your DA score.
It helps you discover content that can be repurposed for more blog posts, social media,etc...

Things to do in a Content Audit

Optimise blog post title.
Make sure headers and sub-headers are use in blog post.
Check keywords.
Check for broken links.
Make sure post includes internal links.
Check for suitable external links.
Make sure blog post has a meta description.
Optimise images (size, file name).
Make sure all images have alt tags using keywords.
Check social share options are working correctly.
Analyse the text. Can the post be improved? Add extra content to the post to make it longer? Update information? Check grammar?
Does the post have a suitable Call To Action (CTA)?
See where your traffic to posts is coming from (Google Analytics, Google Console and others will be helpful with this part).
Check for blog comments. How many? Replied to all?
