Books: First Lines Fridays 4th April 2025
What is First Lines Fridays?
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
My Pick For This Week
The first lines of the book:
Wrenching the handbrake, Ted pulled up outside the house of his favourite customer. He always looked forward to this delivery slot — it put a grin on his face as wide as his windscreen. No other customers would offer him tea on his rounds, there just wasn’t time. But Sarah Brown of 64 Stourview Way was from the frugal make-do-and-mend generation. She’d make a flask of tea first thing in the morning, so she only had to boil the kettle once to save on electricity. As soon as she heard his van pull up, she’d have a hot, steaming cuppa waiting for him on the kitchen counter.
And the book is...
- ASIN : B0BLZK87JF
- Publisher : Joffe Books cozy crime thriller, mystery and suspense
- Publication date : December 13, 2022
- Print length : 366 pages
Eighty-six-year-old Sarah Brown was found murdered in her hallway by her delivery man, a domino clutched in her hand — with a name scratched on it.
When another person is found dead with a domino in their hand, and with the police making no progress, the ladies will need to help unmask a serial killer. But at least they have Fiona’s scruffy-haired terrier cross to assist them.
With plenty of tea and cake along the way, and despite squabbles with their rivals, the Cats Alliance across the street, the Charity Shop Detective Agency is born.
