First Lines Fridays

Books: First Lines Fridays 9th May 2025

Welcome to First Lines Fridays! This week we’re diving into the opening lines of a cosy mystery that promises to draw you in right from the start. I haven’t read it yet, but the first sentence certainly piques my curiosity! With just the right hint of intrigue and charm, it’s got me wondering what twists and turns lie ahead. So, let’s take a look at this week’s first line and see if it hooks you as much as it has me!

I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

I stand in the middle of my grandmother’s—no, my—living room, surveying the organized chaos around me. Streamers drape elegantly from the ornate crown molding, their pastel hues a stark contrast to the deep, rich tones of the antique furniture. The scent of lemon furniture polish mingles with the aroma of freshly baked cookies wafting from the kitchen. It’s almost perfect, but something still feels off.
