First Lines Fridays

Books: First Lines Fridays 13th June 2025

Welcome to First Lines Fridays, where I open a book I’ve never read, share just the first line, and see where it might take me. No blurbs, no context — just the opening words, standing on their own. Will they intrigue, confuse, delight? There’s only one way to find out. Have a read, take a guess, and see what story lies behind that first sentence.

I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

Izla peeked around a large sycamore and smiled. Ruben and Emmie were locked in a tight embrace. She knew she couldn’t take all the credit, but she had encouraged the couple more than once. If there was one thing in life Izla could see, it was a good match, and Emmie and Ruben were definitely that. “Spying on mortals again?” came a voice from behind. Izla spun around and glared at her brother. “Shhhh! Look how cute they are.” Thane shook his head and grinned. “One of these days, you are going to regret meddling in people’s lives.”

Book synopsis for The Beginning of Once Upon a Time by Kristy Dixon

Izla isn’t just a fairy princess… She is a matchmaking fairy princess. If there is anyone unhappy in her father’s kingdom, she is sure love will fix it.

Having a sister that interferes in everyone’s life can be annoying, but Thane has gotten used to it. When his father commands him to help Izla with her escapades, he believes he is being pushed too far. Why can’t she let people find love on their own?

When a poor miller draws the attention of a greedy king and puts his daughter in danger, Thane has to interfere to save the innocent girl. Talking to women has always made him feel awkward, so he solicits the help of his sister’s friend Ava. The only problem—he’s starting to feel nervous around her.

Will everyone find love, or will Izla’s interference cause problems even a fairy godmother can’t solve?
