Books: First Lines Fridays 28th November 2025
Why I Love First Lines Fridays
I'm joining in with First Lines Fridays because it’s a brilliant way to highlight more books from my own collection. Whether it’s a current read or one still on my TBR pile, I love sharing those unforgettable opening lines that instantly grab you.
What is First Lines Fridays?
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
My First Lines Pick For This Week
The first lines of the book:
“Lily,” a soft voice says to me. My body is gently pushed. “Wake up, darling. You must wake up now.” I attempt to open my eyes, and when I do, Mommy is staring at me, concerned. “Mom?” I say, confused when I notice it’s still dark outside. “What time is it?” I start to yawn. I didn't sleep for too long. Mommy says I sleep too much for a little girl who just turned seven last week. She tells me that I’m already sleeping like a teenager. “Lily,” she whispers aggressively. “Look at me.” I blink several times, attempting to understand why she’s upset. “Mom, is—” She puts a finger to my lip and looks around my bedroom. “You must be quiet, dear.” She extends her hand to me. “We have to leave. They’re here.”
And the book is...
Lily Parker’s mundane life is forever changed when her husband becomes the new plastic surgeon at Northwind Clinic. Located on a secluded island, the clinic offers ultimate privacy for the rich and famous.
But something isn’t right at her new home.
With tall walls surrounding the shore, security guards working around the clock, and cameras watching her every move, Lily becomes highly anxious, bordering on paranoid.
When Lily witnesses the tragic death of a woman working at the clinic, she questions her perfect life and the people around her. More unsettling are the words the woman whispered to Lily before she died.
You shouldn’t have come here.
Fans of Freida McFadden and Kiersten Modglin will devour this fast-paced psychological thriller. The twists will keep you turning the pages through the night.
