One thing that most bloggers will agree on is the struggle to build engagement on our blog posts. Even those of us with high traffic sites strive to get more blog comments on our posts.

The reasons bloggers love comments so much are numerous.

Firstly, because it creates a connection with our readers (sometimes it can feel a bit like we're just talking into the void). This is actually one of the top reasons why a lot of bloggers give up.

When blog readers comment to say they enjoyed a post, to share opinions about a post or ask questions related to the post etc it gives the blogger a good indication about whether or not the content they are putting out is right for their readers. It can also spark ideas for future blog posts.

Secondly, the comments sections is an extension of the blog post and so quality comments containing keywords can have a positive impact on SEO.

When you get a link placement on another domain to your own, this is called a backlink.

Commenting on other peoples blog posts is a great way to get backlinks for your own blog. Whilst links in comment sections are usually No-Follow (meaning they won't have as much impact as a direct Do-Follow link) they can help improve your off-page SEO.

A healthy backlink profile will have a mix of Do-Follow and No-Follow links. If the links are from blogs with high DA Scores the positive effect will be greater.

How Blog Comments Help Increase Traffic and New Visitors

Posting comments on other peoples blog posts is a great way of building relationships with other bloggers and readers. Showing support for other bloggers is always appreciated and with the right comment you could grab the interest of their readers and turn them into followers of your own blog too.

In fact, blog commenting is great for building credibility and driving traffic to your own blog. Readers that like your comment might click through to your blog to find out more about you and your content.

Best Practices for Blog Commenting

Don't post spammy comments. Comments should be on topic (read the post first!) and add something to the conversation.

Avoid generic short comments. Whilst "great post" is nice it doesn't add anything to the conversation and can therefore be seen as spam comments. Aim for at least two sentences.

Leaving a thoughtful, insightful comment will make you stand out both to the owner of the blog and the other blog readers. A blog comment that offers value can be a great way of driving traffic to your own blog.

Remember the type of comments you leave speaks volumes about you, and the same goes for visitors leaving comments on your blog. Aim for high-quality comments.

For this post we'll be taking a closer look at everything you need to know about backlinks; What they are, how to get them, and why they are important for your blog.

What are backlinks?

To put it simply, backlinks are created when one website links to another website.

If you include a link to my website on your blog you are giving me a backlink. When I include a link to your blog in one of my blog posts e.g. in my monthly book bloggers round up post, I'm giving you a backlink.

Types of backlinks

There are two types of backlink; Do-Follow and No-Follow.

Do-Follow backlinks

Do-Follow backlinks can be crawled and therefore have a much higher impact on SEo and your DA score. These are the best backlinks as they essentially mean the website is vouching for your content.

No-Follow backlinks

No-Follow backlinks are when a website mentions your website but doesn't vouch for your content.

Sponsored posts, affiliate links and any other paid links are usually marked No-Follow. The same for social media links.

No-Follow backlinks have less impact on SEO but are still valuable as they can generate traffic to your website.

How to Get backlinks for your blog

Both Do-Follow and No-Follow backlinks can be acquired organically over time by creating quality content and using good SEO practices on your blog.

How to actively acquire backlinks

The best way to get backlinks to your website is to actively search for them. Never buy backlinks though!

Pitch link placement - This is when you contact other bloggers to pitch them one of your links (not paid). You basically ask them if they would be interested in including a link to your blog post in one of theirs.

Guest posting - When you guest post on another bloggers website they will usually include a link to your website in the post.

Be a podcast guest - Podcasts and internet radio also usually include links to the websites of their guests. You can also get extra backlinks through PR from news sites.

Online Directories - Add your website to high-quality online directories.

Be active online - Having an active online presence can really pay off. People are more likely to include backlinks for others they have built a relationship with.

By being active online you also makes your content easier to discover.

Why backlinks are important

Backlinks can have a huge impact on your blog. The quality and quantity of your backlinks can help you rank higher in search engines results and improve your DA Score.

When high-authority websites link to your content it demonstrates to search engines that your blog has authority. The higher quality backlinks you have, the higher you can rank in search engine results.
