We all want to know the secret to getting shiny, voluminous, and healthy hair with the perfect colour right? A step by step guide to achieving your best hair ever would be great... that kind of depends on the type of hair you have though, how it reacts to different treatments, the condition of your hair and well, pretty much comes down to each individual person. What works for some won't work for others.
I can't promise any miracles in this post. I'm not an expert. I am however someone who has dyed their hair repeatedly over the years and tried pretty much every shade out there.
I love experimenting with my hair. Over the past year alone I've gone from almost black, very long, naturally curly hair to short, straight, bleached platinum blonde, and about every other shade of blonde possible...then red, ginger, and finally brown (the closest I've been to my natural hair colour in years!
Here's a summary of what I've learnt during this time.
From black to platinum blonde
Going from black to platinum blonde should be done gradually and not by home-bleaching your hair six or seven times in the space of a month. Twice in the same week is a big no-no. Yes, I fried my hair... I seriously killed it... There was a LOT of breakage.
Whilst I've seen a lot of people raving about how good OLAPLEX is when it comes to bonding products it isn't cheap. L'Oreal Elvive has a good selection of bond repair products that are more budget friendly but very effective.
Whilst going through the process of home-bleaching your hair it's a good idea to use some extra conditioning products and /or bonding products to help reduce the amount of damage. Something I forgot to do at the time and majorly regret.
Expect to cut off a lot of length during and after bleaching your hair. Now this I was prepared for. I wanted to go shorter and so had factored that in when I started my bleaching journey. A small trim between bleaching sessions is a good way to reduce damage to the hair.
Something else I should mention here is that if you have naturally wavy or curly hair like me know that the bleach might kill your curls. My ringlets turned into a big mass of frizz.
Blonde hair care tips
- Purple shampoo is your friend.
- Achieving the right shade of blonde is very hit and miss. Your hair will also look different shades depending on what light you're in.
- Conditioners and hair oils are essential for keeping hair healthy, shiny and soft.

From blonde to brown
It's a good idea to put the red pigment back into your hair first before going brown to avoid getting a horrible greenish tint. You don't want your hair to look like the colour of swamp water.
When putting colour back into bleached hair know that any colour added is likely to fade quickier than you might be used to. Even a bright red can become a faded orange after just one wash (yes, I'm saying this from experience).
Just like with any other change you make to your hair colour it's a good idea to use some deep conditioning/ bonding products to get your hair looking shiny and healthy. The most important thing to keep in mind when changing hair colour is that if all else fails you can always cut your hair and start over. It's not permanent.
How often do you dye your hair? Do you have a favourite hair dye brand? What's the most radical change you've done to your hair? What products do you use to improve the condition of your hair?
