WOW! What a month! This November I decided to take part in not one, but three, writing challenges (crazy I know!). - NaNoWriMo AKA National Novel Writing Month, goal to write a 50K novel in 30 days. - WNFIN AKA Write Non Fiction in November, goal to write a non fiction book in 30 days. - PiBoIdMo AKA Picture Book Idea Month, goal to come up with 30 ideas for children's picture books in 30 days. We've finally come to the end of this roller-coaster month of highs and lows. It's been 30 days of writing frenzy, but I've had a blast along the way.
Here's a quick look at how things went:
NaNoWriMo
This was hard this year. In fact, I didn't win. Both kids got ill, I got ill, life happened and well, my novel stopped happening. I'm still pleased though as I'm 30K into a novel that was just a blank page at the the start of the month. That's still pretty good going. I love the characters I came up with, and the story, and will be working on finishing this first draft of Family Secrets over December and January.
WNFIN
Ta da! My winners badge! :)
I successfully managed to finish the first draft of my non fiction book From Idea to Published. Loving how it turned out, and can't wait to jump into editing it this month (more about that soon).
PiBoIdMo
And another winners badge! :)
Not all the ideas on this years list were amazing but there were a few diamonds in the rough that I'll be turning into books in 2016. One thing that did surprise me was the number of non fiction picture book ideas I listed as in past years I'd always listed mainly fiction ideas. That said, the ideas I'm most excited about are fiction ones.

This November I'm taking part in several challenges. One of these challenges is the Picture Book Idea Month challenge organised by +Tara Lazar.
I've taken part in, and won, at this challenge for several years now, and always have loads of fun. It's great having an idea swipe file to pick from throughout the year too.
As I'm being super organised this year, I decided to make an idea sheet to use during PiBoIdMo to register my ideas. It makes is easier to keep track of the number of ideas to make sure I'm on schedule with my idea a day.
I've kept the file pretty basic with sections for title, main character(s), and an idea summary for each day. I have a notebook where I'll be doing doodles and making detailed notes as and when needed, but I wanted a place to keep all the rough ideas organised.
As I'm sure others will find it useful too, I'm giving it away as a free download. That's right, completely free. Just click below to download your copy.
Will you be doing PiBoIdMo this year? How do you record your ideas?
YAY!!! Happy dance time. I got my 30 ideas and 30 days and therefore I'm happy to announce that I'm a PiBoIdMo winner again this year :D

I'm really excited about some of the ideas on my list too. Some of which have been put on my publication list for 2015 so keep your eyes open for updates on those in the near future ;)
Unfortunately due to personal problems and a variety of viruses and other seasonal joys (both my kids decided to bring home every cold, cough, stomach bug.... that was on offer this year and generously shared them with us all), I didn't manage to be a WNFIN winner too. I had hoped I'd get the book finished by the end of November but life just got in the way. I am however closer to finishing it than I was at the beginning of the month and so I still class that as a mini victory even if I didn't meet my goal. How to be Pinterest Perfect will be finished soon though and is scheduled for release early in the new year.
Did you meet your writing goals for November?
Time for another Ask Jo session. In this video I answer the question "What do you like about the PiBoIdMo challenge?"
Are you taking part in the Picture Book Idea Month challenge too? What do you like most about it?

This month I'm participating in two creative challenges. The first is PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month) where the goal is to come up with 30 ideas for picture books in 30 days. I love this challenge and have been a winner for the past two years in a row.
The other challenge I'm participating in is WNFIN (Non Fiction Writing in November), where my goal is to finished the first draft of my non fiction book How to be Pinterest Perfect (the 2rd book in the Writers and Authors Guide to Social Media Series).
This month I'm doing 3 challenges; NaNoWriMo, NonFiWriMo, and PiBoIdMo.
Today I'm going to cover PiBoIdMo AKA Picture Book Idea Month. The aim of this challenge is to come up with 30 ideas for children's picture books in 30 days.
I took part last year and reached 43 ideas in the one month so I'm feeling optimistic that I'll reach my goal.
It's going to be a creative, and fun, month!

So far I'm doing really well... in fact I've gotten a bit carried away in all the excitement and already have 26 ideas on my idea list... and it's only day 2! Hitting my goal of 30 ideas in 30 days shouldn't be a problem ;)
Just to be clear, I don't have 26 finished manuscripts. These are just ideas. In most cases I have just a working title and a few notes and maybe a quick sketch or two of what the characters might look like. I've already been asked by several people how I've managed to come up with so many ideas in such a short space of time. Those of you that know me will know that coming up with ideas isn't a problem for me. In fact I often have too many. The real problem is finding the time to develop them all. As a mum to a 4 year old and a 1 year old I watch a lot of cartoons, read a lot of children's books and play a lot of games. I also get inspiration from just watching my kids. My 4 year old often comes up with some wonderful comments that spark my creative brain too.
My PiBoIdMo list will be handy for when I do 12 x 12 in 2013. The aim of the 12 x 12 challenge is to write 12 complete picture book drafts in 12 months.
These brainstorming challenges are great motivators to create more picture books and will definitely play an important role in the books I produce over the next year. They're also a fun way to connect with other children's authors and illustrators.
Are you taking part in any of these events?
