The 15-Minute Weekly Tech Audit: A Non-Techie’s Guide to a Healthy Blog

We’ve all been there. You started your blog because you love sharing—whether it’s a review of a book you couldn't put down, a new fitness routine, or a travel itinerary from your latest weekend away. But then, the "tech gremlins" move in. Suddenly, you’re hearing about algorithms, indexing, and site speed, and it feels like the joy of blogging is being buried under a mountain of jargon.

I’m a huge fan of a good audit. Over the years, I’ve shared plenty of blogging basics for beginners and even did a deep dive into how to do a full blog audit to help you get your strategy on track. But I know that sometimes, a full-scale audit feels like a massive project you just don't have time for.

That’s why I’ve developed this 15-minute weekly tech audit. It’s simple, it’s clear, and I promise it won’t make your head spin. Think of it like a quick "house tidy" for your corner of the internet.

What we're covering today:

Why tech actually matters for your SEO
The 5-Minute Link Sweep
Checking your site speed in 3 minutes
Quick "Google Check-In" (It's not as scary as it sounds!)
The 3-Minute Mobile Walkthrough

Disclosure: The FTC Disclosure Provision is a law that requires influencers to disclose when they are being paid to promote a product or service. So please know that if I'm not making money through affiliate links/sponsored content on the post you're currently reading, it's an oversight on my part and will be corrected soon. Read the full disclosure about all the legal stuff here.

Why Bother with Tech?

If you’re trying to improve your blog SEO, Google needs to be able to "read" your site easily. If your "front door" is locked or your "hallways" are cluttered with broken links, Google will just move on to the next house.

Grab a cuppa, set a timer for 15 minutes, and let’s tick these off together.

1. The 5-Minute Link Sweep

Broken links are incredibly frustrating for readers. If someone clicks a link to see your favourite beauty product and hits a "404 Error" page, they’ll likely leave your site immediately.

What to do: Use a free tool like Dr. Link Check or if you use WordPress, a simple plugin to find any "dead ends."
The fix: Either update the link to a new, working URL or remove it entirely. It keeps the journey smooth for your readers.

2. The 3-Minute Speed Check

We live in a fast-paced world. If your site takes ages to load, people won't wait—especially if they’re browsing on their phones while on the go.

What to do: Pop your URL into Google PageSpeed Insights.
The fix: Don’t worry about the complex graphs. Just look for the stuff you can improve on. Usually, the culprit is a giant image. If you find one, make a note to resize your photos before uploading them next time. Small changes make a big difference!

3. The 4-Minute "Google Check-In"

Google Search Console sounds scary, but it’s actually just a way for Google to leave you a note about how your site is doing.

What to do: Log in and look at the "Indexing" report.
The fix: You’re looking for any bright red "Error" bars. Most of the time, everything is fine (grey and green are your friends!), but catching a red error early means you can fix it before it affects your traffic growth.

4. The 3-Minute Mobile Walkthrough

Since most of us are trying to grow our blogs without the overwhelm, we often forget to look at our own work the way our readers do: on a smartphone.

What to do: Open your latest post on your phone.
The fix: Can you read the text easily? Are the buttons too close together? If a pop-up is blocking your beautiful content, it might be time to tweak your settings.

Final Thoughts

Blogging should be about the things that make life better—learning, exploring, and enjoying the process. By spending just 15 minutes a week on these "techy" bits, you’re clearing the path so your content can actually reach the people who need to see it.

What to Do When Your Blog Gets Zero Views (A Gentle Pep Talk)

You finally hit “publish”, made yourself a cuppa to celebrate, opened your analytics… and saw absolutely zero views.
Not a single one.
Not even a lost internet wanderer who clicked by mistake.

Before you start doubting everything: breathe.
Honestly, you’re not doing anything wrong — you’re just at the beginning. And beginnings are quiet.

Here’s your gentle pep talk (and a practical action plan) for those moments when your blog feels like it’s whispering into the void.

1. Remember: Everyone Starts at Zero

Even the bloggers you admire now — the ones with fancy websites, book deals, and queues of readers — began with an empty audience and a lot of hope. Zero views doesn’t mean you lack talent; it simply means you’ve only just opened the door.

Think of it like planting a seed: you don’t get a garden the moment you bury it in the soil. For guidance on building a strong foundation, check out How to Build a Strong Blog Brand.

2. Stop Refreshing the Stats (Really)

Checking your analytics every ten minutes isn’t motivational — it’s exhausting.
Close the tab. Step away.

Your energy is far better spent writing your next post, improving your craft, or taking a walk to clear your mind. Blogs grow through consistency, not through constant stat-checking. For tips on staying productive, see Time Management Tips for Busy Bloggers.

3. Share Your Posts (Even If You Feel a Bit Shy)

Readers won’t know your blog exists unless you tell them.
Share your posts:

On your social media accounts
In relevant groups or communities
With friends who might genuinely enjoy the topic
In your email newsletter, even if it only has a handful of subscribers

It’s not bragging — it’s helping someone who might benefit from what you’ve written. For more ideas, read How to Promote Your Blog Posts.

4. Give Your Blog a Fighting Chance With Basic SEO

You don’t need to become an SEO expert overnight, but a few simple tweaks go a long way:

Use clear, descriptive titles
Answer real questions people actually search for
Break up posts with helpful headings
Write in a natural, conversational style

For a practical guide, check out On-Page SEO Made Easy: A Practical Checklist for Your Site and Types of SEO: A Comprehensive Guide for Beginners.

5. Write as If People Are Reading (Because One Day They Will Be)

Even if you’ve got no audience yet, pretend you do.
Imagine someone on the other side of the screen nodding along. This will keep your tone warm, engaging, and confident — and when people do start arriving, they’ll feel right at home.

6. Look for Small Clues and Tiny Wins

After a few posts, you might start to notice patterns:

Which topics you enjoy writing most
Which posts get even a tiny bump in views
What people comment on or share

These little clues help you shape your blog into something readers will genuinely love. For a checklist to track your blog’s growth, see Blog Audit Checklist 2025: SEO, UX & Monetisation.

7. Celebrate Every Small Victory

One view? Wonderful.
One comment? Pop the kettle on — that’s worth celebrating.
One share? You’re practically famous.

Small milestones matter. They’re signs of growth, even if they feel modest at first. For more encouragement, browse 30 Inspiring Quotes Every Blogger Needs to Hear.

8. Most Importantly: Keep Going

Your blog isn’t failing — it’s simply warming up.

Every post you publish is strengthening your voice, sharpening your skills, and slowly building a space people will want to visit again and again. Views often come a bit at a time… then all at once. To understand common pitfalls, see Why Blogs Fail and How To Make Sure Yours Doesn't.

Your job? Keep writing until the “all at once” arrives.

A Final Gentle Word

You’re doing something brave — putting your ideas into the world where others can read them, relate to them, and find comfort in them. That’s no small thing.

Your voice is worth hearing.
Your stories are worth sharing.
Your blog is worth building.

So chin up.
Keep writing.
And remember: every blogger with a bustling audience was once right where you are now — quietly typing away with zero views and a whole lot of hope.
