Who is Your Favourite Disney Character?

I've been continuing to sketch as part of my Disney illustration study (you can check out my last update post about it here). Today I'm sharing with you the rest of the character sketches I've done so far as part of my study into what makes Disney characters so lovable.

Here's a few of the things I've noticed whilst sketching:

One of the things that really stands out is the eyes. The style differs between the characters but the eyes remain the focal part of the face.
The nose, in general, is understated.
Lips tend to be full.
Necks tend to be long.

Which is your favourite sketch so far?

I'm going to be moving the study over to other Disney characters now. I'm particularly interested to explore the animal characters and how they stay true to the breed whilst also giving them "human like" expressions.

Which is your favourite Disney character and why?

This week my Disney illustration study is dedicated to Winnie the Pooh and friends. I'm a huge Winnie the Pooh fan and so couldn't miss out on doing the bear of little brain and his buddies.

Which is your all time favourite Disney film?

For this weeks Disney Illustration Study I decided to sketch some of the characters from Cars. Mater and Guido are my favourite characters, and, of course, I couldn't not do Lightning Mc Queen.

I loved Alice in Wonderland when I was little. For this weeks Disney Illustration Study I decided to sketch Alice, along with two of my favourite characters from the film, The Cheshire Cat, and the White Rabbit.

This weeks Disney Illustration Study is for Mulan. I decided to do Mulan in one of her fighting poses as I love that she's a kick-butt female lead. Of course, I couldn't resist doing Mushu and that little lucky grasshopper too.

Disney Illustration Study: Chip and Dale

It's Wednesday which means it's time for another Disney Illustration Study sketch.

For this week I decided to go with a classic duo that I loved when I was little... Chip and Dale.

Chip was the logical schemer while Dale was the goofy, dim-witted one. Dale was my favourite.

The two had a very similar appearance but, there were a few differences that helped tell them apart. Chip had a small black nose and two centred teeth. Dale had a larger, dark red nose and prominent canine teeth.

For this weeks Disney Illustration Study I decided to sketch Pinocchio and his wise little buddy Jiminey Cricket.

As I live in Italy, Pinocchio has a special place in my heart. The original character is a real business here, and models and other souvenirs can be purchased all over the place. I have to be honest though. I think Disney did a great job with him.

Jiminey Cricket is up there on my favourites list. A real Disney classic that has stood the test of time.

Disney illustration study

My kids love Disney. I love Disney. Who doesn't right? Disney cartoons are common viewing on our TV. So, what is it about Disney characters that makes them so lovable?

I decided to do a study into the Disney way, starting from the illustration style. One of the first things I realised is that the illustrations are simple and yet contain so much detail all at the same time.

Then there's the amount of expression they give their characters. I was watching Aladdin with my kids the other day and was reminded of what a fantastic character the flying carpet is. No face, no limbs... just a carpet... but wow did it have character!

Anyway, I decided to start my study by looking at the Disney Princesses as they play key roles. Here's a few of the sketches I've done so far:
