Disney illustration study

My kids love Disney. I love Disney. Who doesn't right? Disney cartoons are common viewing on our TV. So, what is it about Disney characters that makes them so lovable?

I decided to do a study into the Disney way, starting from the illustration style. One of the first things I realised is that the illustrations are simple and yet contain so much detail all at the same time.

Then there's the amount of expression they give their characters. I was watching Aladdin with my kids the other day and was reminded of what a fantastic character the flying carpet is. No face, no limbs... just a carpet... but wow did it have character!

Anyway, I decided to start my study by looking at the Disney Princesses as they play key roles. Here's a few of the sketches I've done so far:

I'll be doing more character sketches as I continue my study. Who is your favourite Disney character? Why?

I'd also like to take this opportunity to invite you to check out my illustrations on my Pinterest Board at https://www.pinterest.com/jolinsdell/illustrations/.
