It's now officially 2024! Happy New Year!
I don't know about you but I really want to start this year off right. A good way to achieve the things you want is to set yourself goals.
Notice I said goals and not resolutions. New year's resolutions never seem to actually stick long term. They're those good intentions we have but then let slip after a few weeks. Goals on the other hand are measurable and more specific making them easier to focus on and ultimately achieve.
The start of the year is the perfect time to set some concrete goals and makes it super easy to see how far you've come throughout the year.
Obviously the type of goals you set will depend on what you want to achieve. I'm personally breaking mine down into categories;
- health
- work
- hobbies
- travel
- other
In order to make sure I achieve the goals I set I'm making sure they are SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound.
Another key element is to break bigger goals down into smaller goals. All the little milestones you need to reach in order to achieve the big goal.
Having a plan of daily, weekly, monthly and year goals helps create focus and makes it easier to measure if you're on track.
Here's a few goal ideas for 2024:
Health goals
- Maintain a regular fitness regimen
- Eat healthier food
- Spend more time in nature
- Practice self-care
- Keep a regular sleep routine
- Reduce sugar
- Declutter home
- Mediate every day
- Move more - Stop being sedentary
- Practice positive daily affirmations
- Drink more water
Travel goals
- Visit a new country/city
- Discover new places in the city you live in
- Visit friends/family
- Learn a new language
- Try new cuisines from different parts of the world
Other goals
- Declutter home
- Create capsule wardrobe
- Read for at least 30 minutes daily
- Meet new people
- Learn to play an instrument
- Try a new hobby
Like I said, the key to to make the goals measurable. For example, if the big goal is to maintain a regular fitness regimen you could break it down into number of squats to do each day or workout for 30 minutes everyday.
Whether you choose to make it measurable by time spent doing it or by a specific number of repetitions, both are measurable goals. If you complete them every day you'll soon be maintaining a regular fitness regimen.
If your big goal is to declutter your home break it down by room or even more and divide it into single tasks. For example, declutter bedroom is good but declutter clothing is better. Even the task of decluttering clothing can be broken down further. Divide by season or by clothing type. Declutter coats or jumpers. All the smaller goals that when added up mean you achieve your big goal.
By dividing down into bite sized tasks it helps make it more measurable but also helps keep you motivated in working towards the big goal.
Keeping track of your progress
Tracking apps can be really useful for helping you stay organised and measuring your progress towards your goals. Fingerprint for Success has put together a great list of the best goal tracking apps for 2024. Have you tried any of these apps? Which is your favourite?
What goals are you setting yourself for 2024? Do you break down bigger goals into step by step goals?
