What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

The farmhouse was infested with pixies. You didn’t see them peeking out from behind the lacy wisps of seemingly moth-eaten curtains, nor snatched glimpses of them in the gloomy cracks between the porch’s warped floorboards. It was the entire look of the place, like the old farmhouse and its decrepit garden were clinging to the life of one final breath before finally, begrudgingly, submitting to an existence of neglect.

Book synopsis for The Problem with Pixies by Kat Lapatovich Healy

A pixie-infested farmhouse.
A pain-in-the-butt familiar.
A hunky lumberjack shifter.

Not at all what a witch on the run like me expects to find in small-town Redbud, Indiana, but life’s been throwing me a bunch of curveballs lately.

Most recently? Discovering a demonic curse on the family grimoire sucking the magic straight out of my coven’s hearts. 10 out of 10 do not recommend, and there’s only one thing an uninitiated witch like me can do.

Steal it.

Get that spell book as far away from my family and the rival coven who cursed it, hide it, and figure out how to break the curse.
Preferably before it decides to infect me. Or those hellhound trackers hunt me down.

Say goodbye to carefree afternoon teas and hello to a new identity, a new town, absolutely no distractions—including that gorgeous bad-boy shifter with his own hidden past—and a secret place to work. So those overly curious, gossiping pixies currently infesting my new farmhouse? They gotta go.
Tonight.

A new witch is in town, and I’m on a mission.

The Mystery of the Christmas Bauble by Carmen Radtke book cover
From the past, with love ...

A cryptic message hidden in a tree ornament sends Fiona on a quest through the snowy streets of London.

Not that she believes anything written by a clairvoyant 90 years ago could have anything to do with the present, or should be taken seriously at all.

But she finds out soon that some mysteries ripple through time, and that she might have inherited more than just Christmas baubles with a prophecy from her sleuthing ancestors, Jack and Frances.

Discussing The Mystery of the Christmas Bauble by Carmen Radtke

My Review Summary:

Key Takeaways from the video:

  • I read The Mystery of the Christmas Bauble just before Christmas but hadn’t gotten around to reviewing it until now.

  • It’s a short read and I ended up giving it three stars.

  • The story follows a protagonist piecing together a prophecy left by a clairvoyant from the past, which is contained within a Christmas bauble.

  • The focus is more on uncovering the secret message than on traditional Christmas festivities, though the holiday theme is present.

  • It’s a quick, light read and could be a nice addition to a Christmas-themed book list for next year.

  • Overall, I thought it was an okay read — enjoyable but not particularly standout.

Quotes from The Mystery of the Christmas Bauble by Carmen Radtke

“I don’t mind a small house,” the clairvoyant said with simple dignity. “Intimacy helps with my readings. No, it’s not that.”

“Seven o’ clock sharp,” Gran said with a hint of satisfaction. “My grandmother was a stickler for punctuality. She called it a courtesy that cost nothing and meant a lot.”

My Year in Review A Recap of 2024

Lifestyle: My Year in Review: A Recap of 2024

Wrapping Up 2024

2024 was not an easy year. Loved ones were lost and I struggled with a multitude of health problems (which are still causing issues). It wasn't all bad though. In fact, 2024 had a lot of high points too.

As we kick off this fresh new year now is the perfect time to take a look back over the past 12 months.

2024 was an amazing year for my blog and I'm honoured to have had the chance to work with some fantastic sponsors over the course of the year.

Work with me in 2025

Blog Statistics for 2024

The following stats are to offer transparency. Please keep in mind that I've been blogging for a long time (this blog was started in June 2012).

Highest traffic month: November 2024 with 330,109 views

Monthly traffic stats for 2024:

January - 74,839

February - 55,551

August - 104,150

September - 122,769

October - 262,198

The first lines of the book:

Philip Levine was one of the most sought-after guides at the MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. After many years at the job, he had both expertise and a vast command of the working mechanisms of one of the most influential and prestigious museums of contemporary art in the world. In time, he had accumulated interesting stories regarding every intricate detail of each of the works exhibited at the museum as well knowing their exact location.

Book synopsis for Murder on Canvas by Aaron Ben Shahar

Greed. Obsession. Betrayal. And a masterpiece of a murder.

When a body is discovered at the New York Museum of Modern Art, lying directly beneath Van Gogh’s renowned Starry Night, the perplexing murder sends shockwaves through the art world. But when the murder victim turns out to be a famous international art restorer, the unanswered questions turn into a full-blown mystery.

Piece by piece, the late restorer’s life comes to light—including a secret kept hidden from the world’s most prestigious museums. Who, really, was the murder victim? Who would want him dead—and why? And which of the two identical pieces of Starry Night, half a world apart, is the authentic Van Gogh?

The baffling case stumps investigators, throwing the art industry into a frenzy of conspiracies involving a ring of infamous Russian art smugglers, an art-loving real estate tycoon, and a collection of replicas so perfectly true to their originals that not even experts can tell them apart.

Mystery meets conspiracy in this gripping international crime thriller, perfect for fans of Dan Brown, Daniel Silva, and Elly Griffiths.

Reading Suggestions to Help Women Navigate Menopause with Confidence

Towards the end of last year, I discovered I had started my journey with perimenopause, and it made me realize how little this topic is discussed.

At just 44 years old, I was surprised to learn that my ovaries were no longer ovulating regularly. Like many, I assumed menopause was something that only affected women over 50. But the reality is that menopause can begin much earlier than expected.

This led me to an important question:
When do women start thinking about menopause?

If mine had started after 50, would I have been any more prepared? Honestly, probably not.

Despite the fact that menopause can last for years and comes with a wide range of symptoms, it remains a topic that many people avoid discussing.

The Importance of Menopause Education

To better understand what was happening in my body, I decided to do some research and find the best books about menopause. Whether you're in your 30s, 40s, or 50s, it's never too early to educate yourself.

If you're looking for insightful reads on this life transition, check out this list of menopause books I found whilst searching on Amazon.
