In the world of books, the opening lines are exactly that — a chance for an author to hook you, to make you lean in and want more. Every Friday, we're diving into the first lines of a different book to see if they really do have what it takes to captivate a reader from the very start. Does that first sentence draw you in or leave you wondering what you’ve gotten yourself into? Let’s find out together. Welcome to First Lines Fridays!

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? 

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page 
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first 
  • Finally… reveal the book!

I wait a little longer than strictly necessary before continuing because this is my favorite part—making suggestions to get them to dive a little deeper into literature. “What if,” I say again, making sure they are all listening, “he’s not actually real?”
