I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

Officer Dean Matheson stands shivering against the cold night, trying not to look too closely at the gruesome scene before him. “Matheson?” says Detective Carl Miller. “Get over here. If I have to look at this, you have to look.” Dean moves closer to the large maple tree the dead woman’s body is swinging from. The brisk wind makes her look as if she’s dancing to slow music. The weather is threatening more snow and, although it’s almost dawn, it’s still pitch-black out here in the woods.

About the book

Book synopsis for Who Cares If They Die by Wendy Dranfield

A Jane Doe hanging in Maple Valley’s woods.

Officer Dean Matheson stands shivering against the cold night, trying not to look too closely at the gruesome scene before him.

The medical examiner says it’s a case of suicide. But the fact that the victim isn't wearing any shoes and there’s a stepladder placed beneath her makes Dean suspicious.

Then another body turns up.

Women are dying. Outcasts that no one would miss.

Dean believes a twisted serial killer is roaming the streets of Maple Valley, hiding in plain sight.

But he’s in over his head, and now he’s put a target on his own back. Trapped in a vicious game of cat-and-mouse with a killer who seems to know his every flaw.

Dean must face his own demons if he has any chance of unearthing the disturbing truth. Before more women pay the price . . .

This pulse-pounding and unputdownable read is perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, D.S. Butler, Charlie Donlea, Lisa Regan, Helen Phifer or Matt Brolly.
