• The author kindly sent me this book and asked if I’d be interested in reviewing it — and as soon as I had a look, I immediately said yes.

• It’s a beautifully illustrated children’s book — the pictures are vibrant, warm, and engaging, perfect for little ones.

• The story is aimed at young children starting preschool, though it would also suit those beginning primary school.

• It explores the fears and anxieties that come with starting somewhere new, especially for children who may be leaving their parents for the first time.

• What I really liked is how the book not only acknowledges those worries but also emphasises the positives — showing that change can be good and that facing your fears can be empowering.

• There are lots of encouraging messages throughout about bravery, confidence, and self-belief.

• I also loved the little lion plush toy that appears as Kai’vier’s companion — it’s a lovely, comforting touch and adds a bit of fun to the story.

• I think this would be a wonderful book to share with a child who’s about to start preschool, or even to read together in a classroom setting.

Books: My thoughts about At the Ragtag Hotel - The Elevator Ride by Freya Novak

• Huge thanks to the author for sending me a free copy — she reached out by email, and the book sounded adorable, so of course I said yes.

• I absolutely loved this one — a solid five-star read!

• The story features a cast of animal characters, all taking turns riding the elevator to the 14th floor.

• What really stood out to me was the variety of animals — not your usual lions or giraffes, but more unusual ones like an armadillo and an okapi.

• I also adored how different languages were subtly introduced — each animal greets in their native tongue (like hola), and the book includes a small note explaining what it means.

• It even includes less common examples, like “good morning” in Swahili, which I thought was brilliant for expanding children’s cultural awareness.

• The illustrations are fantastic — colourful, expressive, and beautifully detailed.

• The facial expressions on the animals were perfect and really helped bring the story to life.
