Synopsis for Journey to Paradise by Paula Greenlees

Singapore, 1949

When Miranda moves to the Alexandra Quarter with her husband Gerry, she hopes it will bring the fresh start they need.

Though their life in ex-pat society is full of luxury, Miranda can't help feeling like an outsider, and her relationship with Gerry becomes increasingly distant.

When doctor Nick Wythenshaw encourages Miranda to work within the local community, she finds new purpose away from her protected world that opens her eyes to a new way of life.

But as riots erupt across the region and danger draws close to home, Miranda must make an impossible choice.

Will she sacrifice everything she holds dear to find happiness?

Discussing Journey to Paradise by Paula Greenlees

Quotes from Journey to Paradise by Paula Greenless

How strange it seemed, at the age of twenty-eight, to be leaving England for the very first time; it surprised her how the people on the quay grew smaller as well as the buildings, and they were quickly absorbed by the grey. Yet still she watched, hoping to get one last glimpse of the thin line of land on the horizon so that she could say a final farewell to home, but it had faded from view and there was nothing left to see.

Loneliness and uncertainty rose through her and the desire to be close to her parents and all that was familiar caught her off guard. She picked up her pen, wanting to write to them, needing to be close, but all the words she’d been wanting to write thundered around in her head, making her temples throb.

England seemed another world as she watched the mesmerising blues and greens of the sea, the hills in the distance and the unfamiliar buildings looming into view.

It made her think of Henry and the softness of his hand in hers. Her whole body ached at the thought and she longed to know how big his hand would have grown by now.

Gerry shook his hand then instructed Jinhai to load their cases into the boot of the car. Miranda watched, aching to help with the smaller ones. When their luggage was loaded, she took her cue from Gerry and settled into the back with just her handbag.

Trishaws and bicycles wove between women carrying wicker crates containing chickens, their feathers fluttering as they squawked, or strange vegetables in rattan baskets, children were crying and beggars limped on crutches. A bullock cart trundled along ahead of them. All the while, the unbearable heat mingled with the sulphurous stench of rotting eggs, which filtered through the open windows of the car.

‘Besides, it’s interesting, don’t you think, the first time you see a new place?’ She leant a little closer to the open window, allowing the breeze to cool her face. ‘Like reading a new book or watching a movie. You never know exactly how it’s going to unfold.’

‘It’s just not the done thing here and you have to make sure that she respects you.’ He gave her hand a little squeeze. ‘It’s different to England, where one might have a cup of tea and a chat with the daily. She’s a servant, something that you’ll have to get used to, not a friend.’

But now, as she looked across at her husband, it seemed as though the blue that once sparkled so clear and bright seemed to fade at stormy moments, like the sky darkening on a winter’s day.

‘It’s different out here, Miranda. And you know what men are like –he probably wants to simply look after you and doesn’t like the idea of you working; it’s a bit emasculating, don’t you think, for men if their wives have to go out to work?’

Of course, the Japanese occupation had been awful, she knew that, but what she hadn’t appreciated was the depth of anger the locals still harboured against the British for allowing the Japanese to march unchecked over the causeway. There was still so much she had to learn about Singapore, and she wondered if she’d ever understand the people here.

‘I look so glamorous, almost like Princess Margaret,’ Miranda said. ‘Are you sure this is such a good idea?’ ‘Yes.’ Georgina nodded her head. ‘And you don’t look like Princess Margaret. You look like yourself, which is much better. Ready?’

Of course, she longed to laugh, to feel free, to dance in the sand, not to drag the past around like some awful deadweight. No one wanted Miranda to be the person she used to be more than she did. But somehow she couldn’t find her way back.

‘You only get one life, Miranda,’ Georgina said, her voice urgent as she stared deep into her eyes for a moment, before she smiled. Then stood up, hugged Miranda and made her way towards the door.

Of course, he had known it would happen one day, but he’d half-assumed she’d always be there, simply because she always had been.

Getting To Know The Book Blogging Community One Guest At A Time

This post may contain affiliate links. Meaning, I get a commission if you purchase through my links, at no cost to you. Read the full disclosure here.

I love connecting with other book bloggers and finding out more about them, their blogs, and how they are going about being part of the book blogging community.

Just chatting can give way to learning about new apps, tools, updates etc that can help in my own journey as a book blogger. With this in mind, I decided to do a series of blog posts interviewing different book bloggers, bookstagrammers, and booktubers to get some behind the scenes insight into how they are approaching the book blogging community and what they've learnt so far.

I've tried to get good mix of levels of experience, styles, and platforms to keep the information as varied as possible.

Just because someone hasn't been doing it very long doesn't mean they can't teach us something new. In fact, I've learnt a lot over the years from people who are just starting out. As newbies they are going into the community with a fresh take on it, and the latest information.

Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy this series of posts and get to know some great members of the book blogging community along the way.

Getting to Know Bookstagrammer Hayley from shelflyfe

The Interview:

1. When did you start your bookstagram account?

I've always loved reading but only started bookstagramming shortly after lockdown in March 2020.

2. What made you pick Instagram as a platform to build your brand?

I chose instagram as a platform because I was already using it in a personal capacity, and that's where I first came across the world of book blogging.
I personally feel that bookstagram is more accessible to more people than a separate blog, but it's just my personal preference.

3. What are your favourite genres to read?

My favourite genres are historical fiction, literary fiction and fantasy, though I'm fussy about what I like in the fantasy genre! I am open to most genres I just don't tend to read erotica/romance or sci fi.

4. Best book you've read so far this year?

It's hard to pick just one, but if I had to choose I'd say The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianne Cronin.

5. What other social media sites do you use most to spread the word about your blog posts/to network with the book blogging community?

I use Goodreads and Twitter to share my love of books and my reviews, and I've recently joined BookTok.

6. What do you wish you'd known about bookstagram before you started?

Before starting I wish I knew more about the community, and especially the community on Twitter, as I have so many great interactions with publishers and authors.

7. What is the hardest part of being a bookstagrammer?

The hardest part of being a bookstagrammer is just having time for everything. If I could not work and just read full time and share reviews I absolutely would
Rolling on the floor laughing

8. How often do you post to your bookstagram account?

I post to my main blogging account on Instagram most days, but I try not to force it. Some days I don't post.

9. What's your most popular post so far?

My most popular recent post is a post about favourite fantasy authors, showing one of my shelves that houses Philip Pullman and Neil Gaiman books.

10. What are you currently reading and why did you choose to read it?

I'm currently reading Girl in the Walls by A J Gnuse. I won a proof a while ago, and have seen so many brilliant things about it from fellow bloggers. It's such a beautiful and unusual book.

I hope you've enjoyed getting to know Hayley better and encourage you to subscribe to her bookstagram channel.

How Introvert Bloggers Can Survive and Thrive

As bloggers we all know how important it is to network, and engage with our readers. Whilst for the extroverts this doesn't pose any problems, for the introverts among us it can be quite a challenge.

So if you're one of those bloggers that get sweaty palms just at the thought of the word "networking" this post is for you.

Whilst a lot of introverts don't feel comfortable in a crowd, a lot are not loners. They love to be part of the community, and make connections with others. They value relationships, and love learning from their fellow bloggers.

Putting yourself out there can be daunting. We ask ourselves if we're good enough. We worry that others will laugh at our lack of knowledge. Don't let that stop you.

Why Bloggers Need Friends

Making friends and networking is one of the fastest ways to grow your blog. There are so many benefits to having blogger friends. To name a few:

  • You can share each others content
  • You can collaborate on posts
  • You can host each other for guest posts or interviews
  • You can run a challenge together
  • You can motivate each other to keep going
  • You can learn from each other and share tips

Networking Tips for Introverts

You're not the only one

The first thing to remember is that you're not the only one. No matter how scared, or nervous you feel, I can guarantee that there are others who feel the exact same way.

Set a specific goal

Setting a goal can do wonders for motivation. Whether it's to collect a certain number of business cards at an event, or to reach out to specific influencers, authors, or book bloggers on social media, having a goal will help you take action.

An Introverts Guide to Networking: How Introvert Bloggers Can Survive and Thrive

Start small

Reaching out to big name bloggers in your niche probably isn't the best place to start. These bloggers tend to be super busy. You're better off finding bloggers who are at the same level or slight further along than you are.

Look for ways to help others

If the focus is on someone else it's much easier to relax and talk to others. Plus being helpful is a great way to break the ice and get to know someone.

If you're at a conference alone, look for other people on their own. Strike up a conversation. Asking questions is a great way to keep the attention on them, and get to know them better.

Look for people asking for help on social media. Often I see people post on Twitter about a problem they're having with their blog, or asking for help with research for a blog post they want to write. This gives the perfect opportunity to reach out and connect with them, and all you need to do is answer their question, or just be a sounding board and listen to them.

Do your research

If you're looking to connection with certain people, a little research can go a long way. You'll feel more prepared and confident if you know a bit about their current projects or interests.

Comment on blogs

This is a sure fire way to get noticed. Bloggers will recognise your name when you post regular comments on their blog, and good bloggers always reply to comments they get making it a great way to start networking with them.

When commenting try to post a longer, well thought out comment. The better your comment, the more value it adds and the more likely they are to pay attention.

Facebook Groups

One of the best things about Facebook is the groups. Join some groups for bloggers in your niche. Most groups have threads with prompts to share blog posts, collaboration requests, etc...

Feature others on your blog

An easy way to get the attention of other bloggers in your niche is to feature them on your blog. This can be done in a number of ways. Feeling too shy to reach out and interview them? Do a round up post and include a link to them in it. Here's an example round up post I did featuring some of my fellow Booktubers: 30 Booktubers You Need To Watch. They'll be thrilled to be included!

Take part in challenges

When you all have a common goal it's easier to communicate. Taking part in a challenge gives you the perfect opportunity to connect.

As a blogger you could consider participating in a blog challenge like the Blog Audit Challenge. Through the monthly link ups and using the hashtag on social media you can easily connect with others doing the challenge.

The same applies for reading challenges. Use the challenge hashtags and reach out to other participants. A simple tweet to congratulate them on their progress can open up a dialogue. Once you've made contact you can deepen the conversation and talk about the challenges, the books you've read, the books you plan to read, etc...

Book Review: Up To Date by Susan Hatler

The book synopsis for Up To Date by Susan Hatler:

Up to Date by Susan Hatler
Ginger knows that practical choices guarantee a stable life, which is why she chose a career as an office manager. Her job provides a steady paycheck, but it also has her snoozing at her desk. She wishes she'd pursued her passion for interior decorating rather than business.

She’s also trying to forget Greg Shaffer—the gorgeous emergency room doctor she met at a dance club last month. Her dad was an emergency room doctor and the stress of the job turned him into a raging alcoholic, which didn’t exactly create happy childhood memories.

Ginger believes donating her decorating services to her friend’s charity auction is the perfect fix for both her problems. She'll get a break from the daily grind, get her creative juices flowing, and stay so busy she'll finally forget about Greg.

But then Greg ends up buying the condo right above her. Even worse, he deliberately wins the bid on her auction item. Greg seems determined to prove to Ginger that practicality has nothing on passion. And as Ginger brings beauty into Greg's world, how can she possibly resist the beauty he brings to hers?

Discussing Up To Date by Susan Hatler

Quotes Up To Date by Susan Hatler :

“All I’m saying is that if I didn’t already have a date tonight, I’d be running upstairs to borrow a cup of sugar—if you know what I mean.”

“You can’t make a man be something he’s not.” She shrugged. “If a guy doesn’t make me happy, he’s gone.

“You can’t make someone change if he doesn’t want to,” she said, her tone uncharacteristically sober. After a long pause, she finally pushed off the doorjamb with her hip. “Life’s short. You need to implement a one-strike-and-you’re-out dating policy. That’s all I’m saying.”

I glanced back at the bid sheet, thinking I could really use a day at the spa to chill me out. But I’d used my credit card so much lately it should’ve melted. Sigh.

“We support you no matter what your decision is, but we believe in your talent and want you to be happy in your career.”

“I thought you didn’t date guys more than once.” “No, my rule is that I date a guy until I’m bored. It’s not my fault that’s usually after the first date.”

“Brace yourself. You’re about to see how much better life can be with a partner.”

The room had been cold and plain before. Now, it felt warm and welcoming, making me want to curl up with a novel in the antique accent chair I’d found at a consignment store.

My stomach churned as I gaped at her hand on his forearm. Was physical touch really necessary during an interview? Every part of me screamed to remove her hand myself. Not that I was territorial or anything.

“We had only met once.” His eyes locked on mine. “Sometimes that’s all it takes.”

I’d worked so hard to keep my life organized and practical. Then, in one day, a tornado had hit and everything was spinning out of control.

“Wish I could bottle your expression. I’d love to see that smile every day.”

People help each other, and maybe you’re not used to that. But that’s what people do when they care about each other.”

“You can only push somebody away so many times before they don’t come back.”

“Art’s a nice hobby, dear.” Mom’s mouth pursed. “But you need a real job with a steady income.”

“The way you decorate isn’t rational. It’s passionate, warm, and vibrant—like you. Maybe it’s time that you accept that you’re fabulous and stand up for yourself.”

“No matter what comes, you’re up at dawn, ready to take on the challenge of a new day. You make life better. Me, I run at sunset, holding everything in, just waiting for the day to end.”

“You’re the sunshine in everyone’s life, and you can’t even see it. You give to others all day long, holding back what you want until late in the evening when you finally allow yourself an hour to run. You’re the strongest person I’ve ever met.”

“When I’m with you, it feels like I’m home.”
