Books: First Lines Fridays 12th September 2025
Welcome back to another edition of First Lines Fridays, where we dive into the captivating opening sentences of books—old favourites, recent releases, and hidden gems. There’s something endlessly fascinating about the first line of a novel. It sets the tone, sparks curiosity, and, if done well, pulls you into a world you won’t want to leave.

I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.
What is First Lines Fridays?
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
My Pick For This Week
The first lines of the book:
Dear Celeste, It started with a single drop of blood. One startling red drop on the gaudy marble coffee table Katie and I bought at a yard sale. I didn’t know yet that Katie was gone, but something in me saw that single drop of blood and started to fall. I still haven’t hit the ground. In a week, it will have been one year since Katie disappeared. Three hundred and sixty-five days and nights since my seventeen-year-old sister walked out of the schoolhouse museum where she worked and vanished into the night.

Book synopsis for Come Home, Katie by J.R. Erickson
What if you died and brought the dead back with you?
A terrible hit and run accident took Celeste Cleary's life until doctors managed to bring her back. But now she's... different. Once a respected scientist, she walks the thin veil between the living and the dead.
As she struggles to return to her former life, Celeste receives an email-a heart-wrenching letter from a stranger, a woman begging for help locating her seventeen-year-old sister, Katie, who vanished a year before.
Celeste's first impulse is to say no-what does she know about finding a missing person?
But late one snowy night Celeste is drawn into the forest where the spectral form of Katie awaits her and, though the girl does not speak, the message is clear. Katie wants Celeste to uncover the truth behind her disappearance.
As Celeste delves into the mystery surrounding Katie's vanishing, she is ensnared in a sinister labyrinth of secrets and lies. Someone doesn't want her to find out the truth and there's nothing they won't do to stop her.
Get lost in a dark paranormal mystery that blurs the lines between reality and nightmare.
