BYOBthon Update: A Recap of Week 3
WOW was that a busy week! Before I dive into updating you about my BYOBthon progress I wanted to let you know why I've not had much time to read this past week. Those of you that know me at least a little probably already know that I have very sporty kids. Between Jiu Jitsu and swimming we're at training every day of the week now. Earlier this week my eldest got promoted at swimming and will now be competing for the Italian Swimming Federation (FIN). This is a dream come true for him and something he has been working hard to achieve. This also means that he will be competing in some big level competitions in November. As if one super athlete son isn't enough, yesterday we were at Palatorrino in Rome for the Italian Jiu Jitsu Championships. My youngest did us proud yet again and added another gold medal to his fast growing collection. This little guy never ceases to amaze me.
Needless to say, I'm one very proud mummy right now. I'm also one very tired mummy right now ;) You'll be happy to know I did manage to fit in some reading this week around all the excitement.
Week 3 Progress
If you missed my previous updates for BYOBthon you can find them here:
I decided to put Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz on hold for a moment as I was struggling to get into it. I will be continuing to read it. I've just moved it down my priority list for BYOBthon.
I finished this book! Which brings my total up to 3 books read so far for this readathon. The Perfect Friend was quite a story! So many twists... and SOooooo many lies. I'm not sure how the author managed to keep track of everything when she was writing this, but the end result was great. No one is who they first seem to be in this book. Finishing this book means I get to add another head to my Hydra, but I just haven't had time to draw it yet. On my list for this week.
What next?
Now I have to decide what to read next. At the moment I'm leaning towards reading the 5th (and final) book in the Percy Jackson series: Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian.
Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian is the fifth awesome adventure in Rick Riordan's top-ten bestselling series.Half Boy. Half God. ALL Hero. Most people get presents on their sixteenth birthday. I get a prophecy that could save or destroy the world. It happens when you're the son of Poseidon, God of the Sea.According to an ancient prophecy, I turn sixteen and the fate of the entire world is on me. But no pressure. Now Kronos, Lord of the Titans, is beginning his attack on New York City. And the dreaded monster Typhon is also heading our way. So it's me and forty of my demi-god friends versus untold evil . . . Rick Riordan has now sold an incredible 55 million copies of his books worldwide
I've loved every book in this series so far and can't wait to see how it ends... but also don't want it to end. The struggle is real people! I have a lot of books on my Net Galley TBR that I need to get round to too though so I'm just going to see what takes my fancy when I get a moment to get some reading done. What have you been reading this week? Are you doing BYOBthon?

I did well during the first week of the readathon (you can find my progress report for week 1 here in case you missed it). Unfortunately my reading pace slowed down in week 2.
Week 2 Progress
The second week wasn't as productive as the first was. Life just didn't leave me as much time to read. Sports training, various appointments, paperwork... 24 hours a day is just not enough. I did finally get some reading done over the weekend though.
Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz.
I'm going slow with this one. It is starting to pick up though.
I'm still having trouble getting my head around the character of Spencer Grant and his strange obsession for Valerie. Turns out that's not the only thing weird about him though. Rocky, the dog, is awesome though.
I do like the character of Roy Miro. He likes Winnie the Pooh which made me warm to him...despite him being a killer. He also comes across as one of those, as I call them, "grey villains". He has his own logic for doing what he does, and tries to be a good person... but kills people.
Fade to Black by David Rosenfelt.
I finished it! Yeah! Murder victims, memory loss, drug dealers, mafia... this book has it all. It wasn't the most amazing book but it was still worth the read. It also gets me another head on my Hydra. I'll do a full review soon.
Yep, I added a new book to my TBR. As I'm going slow with Dark Rivers of the Heart I decided to start a different book. I got a kindle copy of this via Net Galley and so far I'm enjoying it.
About the book:
She’ll do anything for you…
My name is Alex, and my world has been shattered.
My husband has left me.
My children won’t speak to me.
My friend Carrie is the only person I have.
She’s the only one I can trust to keep all my secrets.
She’d never do anything to let me down.
Would she?
This dark, gripping psychological thriller will have you holding your breath until the very last page. Fans of Behind Closed Doors, Sometimes I Lie, and The Girl on the Train will be captivated.

BYOBthon Update
How I'm doing with the readathon so far
It's the second week of the BYOBthon readathon already. That first week just flew by!
So far I'm doing pretty well. I finished my first book which was Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth, and enjoyed every page. I love this series so much and don't want it to end. At the same time I can't wait to read book 5 to see what happens. #BookwormProblems
An extra challenge to do for the BYOBthon readathon is the Creature Creator. For mine I decided to take inspiration from Percy Jackson and draw a Hydra, adding a head for each book read during the readathon.
This is the base sketch with my progress so far:
As you can see, I'm hoping to add more than just 3 heads to this.
I was going to do the ebookathon readathon this month too but have now decided to stick with just the BYOBthon instead. I will be reading more ebooks as part of this readathon which was my main goal anyway. I just think that the books I have on my TBR fit better with the BYOBthon challenges. I'm still deciding what books to add though.
I've already started my next book. Dark Rivers of the Heart by Dean Koontz. I'm only on page 41 so still a long way to go, but started to get a feel for the story. On first impressions I'm not a big fan of Spencer but hopefully he will win me over as the story progresses.
I've also started Fade to Black by David Rosenfelt because I felt like reading in bed last night. This is one of those times I love my kindle app. Makes reading in bed so much easier.
Anyway, I started and I'm now 18% of the way through and loving it. I get the feeling I'm going to speed my way through this one.
What are you reading? Are you doing the BYOBthon too?
It's October already!!! Can you believe it? I can't. Where did the time go? I am super excited about this month though for a number of reasons.
Reason 1
Firstly, because I'm taking part in the Blogtober challenge this month with the goal of posting daily from the 1st through to 31st October. After having taken some time off over the summer, and then the technological struggles of late September (you can read about my September struggles in this post in case you missed it), it will be good to get back into the flow of things again.
Reason 2
Secondly, because I'm taking part in the BYOBthon readathon this month. This will be my first time taking part in this particular readathon so I'm excited to see what it's like. I also can't wait to jump into reading my TBR for the challenges (If you missed my TBR for BYOBthon post you can find it here).
Reason 3
And last, but by no means least, is because during October I'll be taking part in another Bookish Blog Hop.
The Bookish Blog Hops group now has a new logo and will also be organising daily support threads for book bloggers too. Join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/127759384464964/ if you haven't already to be part of the fun.
And now on to the focus of today's post: The first stop on the BOOkish Blog Hop this month where we're sharing about our favourite fictional schools.
Favourite Fictional Schools
Whilst Hogwarts is one of the first fictional schools to come to mind (and one I would definitely like to visit), my first choice would be Camp Half Blood. I'm just a tad obsessed with Percy Jackson at the moment as I'm working my way through reading the series.
Camp Half Blood sounds amazing. Greek Gods, mystical creatures, magic, and those training grounds... and all set in that forest with it's own beach and.... wow!
I'd love to learn survival skills with the other campers. Just seeing them all in action would be amazing though.
My favourite fictional school has to be the Unseen University! Classes are optional, food is aplenty, there's magic, they have Hex the supercomputer and of course the things invented by Bloody Stupid Johnson. And then there is the library..... :-D
One of my favourite fictional schools is Malory Towers from the pen of Enid Blyton. The Malory Towers books follow Darrell Rivers throughout her five years at Secondary school.Malory Towers a castle-like clifftop boarding school in Cornwall. The school is in the form of a square with a courtyard in the middle and a four-storey tower at each corner, with the sides being 3 storeys high. The school also has also has a stables, tennis courts, sports pitches and an outside, natural swimming pool. When I was a child I longed to be able to go to a school like Malory Towers. The closest I got was a secondary school built around a courtyard and lots of Cornish holidays.
My favourite fictional school has got to be Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry! Attending this school would be an incredible experience thanks to the beautiful castle and grounds alone! Add to that being able to spend your school days brewing potions, learning charms and maybe getting lost on a moving staircase? And have you seen the size of that library..? I’d happily live out my days tucked into a cozy corner with a book from the restricted section. I’m still upset I never did get my acceptance letter by the way… Curse you, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named!
What's your favourite fictional school?
Here's the schedule for the BOOkish Blog Hop so you can follow all the posts
In Fade to Black, the thrilling sequel to Blackout from David Rosenfelt, policeman Doug Brock helps a fellow victim of amnesia untangle a murder case and discovers he may not be as distant as he thinks.
It isn’t until fellow group member Sean Conner approaches him after a meeting that Doug realizes the trouble is just beginning. Sean has discovered in his attic what can only be called a scrapbook of a murder victim, but he has no recollection of the girl’s identity or why he might have gathered this information. Doug agrees to help and convinces his captain to open what had been a cold case. When he discovers that he had a personal connection to this case, suddenly he’s questioning everything he thought he knew about the case, about Sean, and about his own past.
In the next page-turning thriller by David Rosenfelt, Doug Brock is back to delight readers and keep them guessing until the end.
Will he be able to solve the mystery that has him running from the law?
If you delight in the suspense of Stephen King and The Stranger by Harlan Coben chilled you to the bone (in the best possible way), you'll love Dark Rivers of the Heart - the classic thriller by Sunday Times and New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz.
'As usual, Koontz's writing is flawless... Dark Rivers of the Heart is exciting, entertaining, and thoughtful' - Denver Post
Spencer Grant is physically and emotionally scarred. An outsider, he often sits for hours in bars just to avoid being alone - and to tell his story to someone who won't remember it the next morning. But last night he met Valerie and something about her melted his isolation.
Then she doesn't turn up for work and he finds her home abandoned, with a strange message fixed to the wall. Before he has time to wonder who or what Valerie is, the house is hit by an explosion.
Spencer escapes, only to find himself on the run - not only from his past but also from the conspiracy he has unwittingly stumbled on.
Percy Jackson isn't expecting freshman orientation to be any fun. But when a mysterious mortal acquaintance appears on campus, followed by demon cheerleaders, things quickly move from bad to diabolical.
In this latest installment of the blockbuster series, time is running out as war between the Olympians and the evil Titan lord Kronos draws near. Even the safe haven of Camp Half-Blood grows more vulnerable by the minute as Kronos's army prepares to invade its once impenetrable borders. To stop them, Percy and his demigod friends must set out on a quest through the Labyrinth-a sprawling underground world with stunning surprises at every turn. Full of humor and heart-pounding action, this fourth book promises to be their most thrilling adventure yet.
Are you taking part in BYOBthon this month? or are you planning on doing another readathon? Have you read any of the books on my TBR?
