What is First Lines Fridays?
First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!
My Pick For This Week
The first lines of the book:
Word of the Day: Displacement (noun). Definition: 1. The enforced departure of people from their homes. 2. In linguistics, the capability of language to communicate about things that are not immediately present. Usage: “My displacement was absolute: I had lost my flat, my fiancé, and my faith in the possessive apostrophe in the span of twelve minutes.” Diary Entry: October 12th Location: Flat 4B, Oxford (Currently a fire hazard of unwashed mugs and thesis notes) Mood: Apocalyptic There is a specific kind of silence that falls over a room right before your life implodes. It’s the sound of the fridge humming, a distant siren, and your own naivety packing its bags and leaving via the fire escape.

As she falls for the mind of the mystery writer, she finds herself clashing with the mechanic who keeps challenging her worldview.
When the truth about the notes comes out, Isla has to decide: Does she want the perfect life she thought she wrote for herself, or the messy, "ungrammatical" love she found in the margins?
