The Interview:

1. When did you start blogging?

I started blogging in 2015 after returning home from a trip inspired by my favorite childhood books. I had wanted to visit the place that inspired Enid Blyton’s Famous Five books setting, this included Corfe Castle and the rest of the Dorset countryside of England. After returning home I started blogging about the trip.

2. What are your favourite genres to read?

My favorite genres are historical fiction and travel memoirs, especially humorous ones like those by Bill Bryson.

3. Best book you've read so far this year?

The best book I’ve read this year so far is the last book in the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series, The Desolations of Devil’s Acre by Ransom Riggs. I could not put any of the 6 books in this series down!

4. What social media sites do you use most to spread the word about your blog posts/to network with the book blogging community?

To spread the word about my blog posts & vlogs on YouTube I use Instagram (@asuitcasefullofbooks), Facebook (@BooksInMySuitcase), and Twitter (@suitcaseofbks).

5. What do you wish you'd known about book blogging before you started?

Nothing. I’ve enjoyed the learning process! My best piece of advice for someone who wants to start blogging is just to start. When I found something I wanted to be better at I found an online course. I’ve done courses in writing, photography, travel blogging, and other skills. There was no need to know all this before starting and I’m still learning as I go!

6. What is the hardest part of being a book blogger?

The hardest part about being a book blogger is having too many books to read and not enough time! And with so many books I want to read for blogging purposes, I have little time to read books that I don’t blog about.

7. What are your goals for your book blog? Do you have any plans for your blog in the future?

As my blog is a literary inspired travel blog, my goal is to inspire my readers to find real life places and experiences to connect to the stories we read. I hope in the future to work with travel destinations and brands to further my mission of inspiring more people to read and thereby become more educated and mindful travelers of the stories and cultures of their vacation destinations.

8. How often do you post to your blog?

I try to post weekly, every Sunday morning. Currently, as I haven’t been traveling lately, my posting has become less frequent. I also mean to send out a monthly newsletter, but this too is currently coming out every couple months instead.

9. What's your most popular blog post?

My most popular blog post is Plan the Perfect Anne of Green Gables Vacation.

10. What are you currently reading and why did you choose to read it?

I am currently reading Travels with Charley: In Search of America by John Steinbeck because many current travelers have started traveling by van, which is what Steinbeck does in this book. He travels America by van with his dog. I too have been thinking about taking a road trip and wanted to read travel memoirs about road trips. I wrote a post, A Book List for American #VanLife for those wanting to do the same.

They had opened Winters Investigations five years ago, both working full time until they started coming to the coast to help run the inn. Lately, they’d decided to take turns working cases in the city and live life a little slower when they were at the coast. She was happy that it was Troy’s turn next.

A speargun. That would be an interesting way to kill someone. I could even give her a running start. Make it a sporting event. Pneumatic, no bullets to trace, quiet, perfect.

Patience had never been one of Troy’s strong suits when it came to a situation where someone could be in danger.

She heard heavy breathing coming from somewhere. Gray light was all she could see as she struggled to open her eyes.

She reached deep into her pocket, pulled out the corkscrew, and clutched it tightly. Jasmine slid the blade open—and waited.

Okay, get up. Let’s get this over with. Start walking. I’ll be close behind you. You got a few more minutes of life to live. If I shoot you now, I’d have to drag you to your grave. I’d rather not do that. I’m getting kind of tired of all this.”

The Interview:

1. What made you want to join Booktube?

Reviewing books extends the life of a good book for me. My relationship to it gets to last longer than just the end of the last page. BookTube creates a great sense of community to engage with people who share a passion for books.

2. How long have you been a booktuber?

Started filming reviews 8 months ago, but posting just 4 months ago.

3. How often do you upload new video content to your channel?

I have a solid upload schedule of every Thursday at 1pm. I always upload a new episode at least once a week. A 2nd weekly video upload happens occasionally.

4. Where do you connect most with other BookTubers outside of YouTube?

I rarely connect outside YouTube with BookTubers. When I do its usually Gmail. My personality is that I can rush familiarity with someone I feel a connection to bookishly, and I'm OK with that!

5. What are your goals for your channel?

My goal is to produce great content that furthers an appreciation of the books I review and inspires long back and forth over comment sections and perhaps eventual livestreams. I love to blow up the comments sections with others who like to do the same.

6. Give your top 3 tips for BookTube success

I am at about 1K subscribers and recognize I am not an expert. One thing I value as a personal trainer with a strong academic pedigree is appreciating expertise. PT is a field with little regulation and a lot of non experts...what I'll say for BookTube, is what appeals to me.

I prefer more than anything, reviewers who are authentic. You can often pick that out right away, sometimes it takes longer. If you are reviewing and authentic and not just trying to get clicks and subscribers, I'm so much more likely to tune in. #1 and 2 would have to be creativity, and 3. Sticking to a beloved genre.

7. What's the hardest part of being a BookTuber?

Most difficult is preparing and filming. The time commitment. I do not want to film anything that is inauthentic or unprepared. I take notes when I read and then when I finish I work hard to put it all together. At night when kids finally go to sleep I have limited time to shoot before to get enough sleep for early morning clients. If I start filming and dogs bark or loud cars pass by, that can be tough.

8. What's your favourite book you've read so far this year?

My favorite book is easy to say because I just read Dune for the 10th time. Maybe that's not fair. I'll say my favorite 2020 new release has been The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson

9. Who are some of the BookTubers you watch regularly?

I follow probably 50 YouTubers large and small. Some of my favorites are:

10. What is your most viewed video on your channel?

My most viewed video is a 5 Likes and 5 Dislikes review of Ready Player Two, which is unfortunate because it was an early video for me and I did poor with the audio. Its also a bit more YA than my typical taste in SciFi
