October Challenges

Our focus for October is on follow options.

The October challenges:

1.  Adding follow options to your blog.

Make it easy for regular readers of your blog by offering follow options. This can be done either directly through the blogging platform you use e.g. Blogger or WordPress, or with an option to have new posts delivered to them via email.

Blogger

How to follow a Blogger (Blogspot) blog:

  • Sign in to Blogger.
  • In the left menu, click Reading list .
  • In the top right, click Manage reading list .
  • Click Add.
  • Type the URL of the blog you want to follow.
  • Click Next.
  • Choose whether to follow publicly or anonymously.
  • Click Follow.

To add a follow option to your Blogger blog:
  • Sign in to Blogger.
  • In the top left, click the down arrow.
  • Choose the blog to update.
  • In the left menu, click Layout.
  • Choose where you want to add the Followers gadget.
  • Click Add a Gadget.
  • In the window that opens, click More Gadgets.
  • Look for “Followers” and click Add
  • Choose your settings.
  • Click Save.
  • To save the arrangement, in the bottom right, click Save.

WordPress

How to follow a Wordpress blog:

The WordPress blog has a post with full information about how to follow blogs in their category Support- Following. Here's a recap of some of the main points:

If you have a WordPress.com account, when you are logged in, click the Follow button. All new posts published on that blog will now show up in your Reader. You will also receive email notifications of new posts.

If you don't have a WordPress.com account, after clicking on the Follow button, a dialog box will pop up asking for the email address where new blog posts should be sent.

To follow a blog not on WordPress.com:
  • To add a blog from Tumblr, Blogger, or any other service to your Reader, click on Manage
  • In the text box at the top of the page, enter the URL of the site you’d like to follow.
  • Click Enter on your keyboard or click the Follow button and future posts published on that blog will appear in your Reader.

To add a follow option to your WordPress blog:
  • In your dashboard, click on Appearance → Customize → Widgets.
  • Choose the location where you’d like to place the widget on your site. Common options here include the Footer and Sidebar, but this may be different depending on your theme.
  • Click either of the + block inserter buttons to see a list of all the available blocks and widgets.
  • Scroll down to the Widgets section and click on the widget once to add it to your site.

Task: Let your blog readers know how they can follow your blog/ add a follow option to your blog.

    1. You can catch up at any time. The blog audit challenge is a flexible challenge. A lot of the tasks are on going so it's not a problem if you drop behind.
