I'm participating in First Lines Fridays as I think it's a great way to highlight more of the books that are on my bookshelves.

What is First Lines Fridays?

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

My Pick For This Week

The first lines of the book:

Looking back, it astonished her that none of them had broken down in the hospital. Even Dilly, who could be relied on to burst into tears over a shed eyelash, had been completely mute. Chrissie supposed it was shock, literally, the sudden suspension of all natural reactions caused by trauma. And the trauma had actually begun before the consultant had even opened his mouth. They just knew, all four of them, from the way he looked at them, before he said a word.

Chrissie, in the twenty-three years she'd been together with Richie, had always believed that he loved her. He loved their three daughters and their house in Highgate and their happy, lively existence. Then suddenly Richie is no longer there, and without him Chrissie's carefully constructed life is in jeopardy. The one big fact she had always tried to keep from her daughters threatens to overwhelm them all. For Richie had still been married to his first wife, the one with a son that he had abandoned in Newcastle. And now, with Richie gone and the practicalities of wills and money to be sorted out, it is finally time for the two families to face each other...

The Book Club In Lily Vale Village by Imogen Payne

Life is just not turning out the way Lucy Middleton had planned. An aspiring author with a serious case of writer's block and a broken heart, she's just about done with love, whether that's fictional or real life!

When the opportunity to escape her stale life in the city for a gorgeous countryside cottage once owned by her Granny Edith arises, Lucy jumps at the chance, sure the change of scenery will cure her lack of inspiration once and for all. If Lily Vale Village is anything like her childhood memories, it'll be the perfect place to take a break from reality while fixing up the cottage for her parents to sell. Now's her chance to prove the true meaning of do-it-yourself!

Just days in Lily Vale Village and she's already met the local eccentric Victor with his obsession for gardening, made a firm friend of Holly who runs a quaint little tearoom and started giving her gran's old cottage some much-needed TLC. It's really starting to look like this short break is exactly what Lucy needs to get her spark back before returning to reality.

But a chance encounter with a handsome stranger sets her plans awry and Lucy questions whether she can leave all she's found in this quiet little village behind. She only has six months to stay in Gran's cottage, but the temporary life she's forged in Lily Vale Village has complicated everything. And when her past comes crashing into her present, will Lucy make the right decision?

The Book Club in Lily Vale Village is the first story in the Lily Vale Village book series, a charming set of novellas revolving around the lives of the ordinary people who reside in the beautiful countryside community.

A Guide to Off-Page SEO

Blogging: Off-Page SEO Checklist

Exploring Search Engine Ranking with Off-Page SEO Strategies

Search engines are a powerful source of traffic for blogs so optimising your blog for SEO is important.

Whilst On-Page SEO plays a significant role in search engine ranking Off-Page SEO is equally, if not more, important.

Disclosure: The FTC Disclosure Provision is a law that requires influencers to disclose when they are being paid to promote a product or service. So please know that if I'm not making money through affiliate links/sponsored content on the post you're currently reading, it's an oversight on my part and will be corrected soon. Read the full disclosure about all the legal stuff here.

A Guide to Off-Page SEO

What is Off-Page SEO?

Off-page SEO is basically your site's reputation. It's the stuff outside of your website that tells Google and other search engines that your site is worth visiting. As such, it plays a huge part in your site's ability to rank.

What kind of tactics are part of Off-Page SEO?

These are just some of the tactics you can use as part of your Off-Page SEO strategy:

  • Link building
  • Guest posting
  • Social media
  • Brand mentions
  • Reviews/Testimonials
  • Quotes

Off-Page SEO Techniques

Link Building

Link building (also known as backlinks) is when other sites link to your site.

When it comes to backlinks there are two factors that get taken into consideration 1) Quantity - A site with a lot of backlinks is seen to have more authority by Google. 2) Quality - If the sites that are including a link to your site are themselves considered to be trusted and reliable site then the impact for your own site is greater.

Guest posting

Guest posting is when you create a post that is published on another site. You are a guest on their site.

Guest posting is a great way to get in front of a new audience and can offer a range of benefits including; quality backlinks to your own site, increasing traffic to your site, and a boost to your rank on search engines. It's also a great way to increase general brand awareness.

Semrush has covers a lot of information in their post How to Guest Post for SEO in 2024. Well worth reading as is explains the pro's and con's of guest posting so you can make sure you're doing it the right way.

You might also find reasons to collaborate with other bloggers useful reading.

Social media

Whilst it doesn't directly impact your search engine ranking social media can have an influence on the overall SEO of your site.

Social media can increase visibility for your site, drive more traffic, and even have an impact on engagement. It also gives a way for others to discover your content and include backlinks to your blog posts on their own sites. All of this can help increase the search engine ranking.

Brand mentions

Brand mentions is when someone else talks about your brand. This could be by mentioning you on social media or in a blog post.

Brand mentions help with SEO because Google considers them implied links even if there's no actual url included.

A simple way to find out who is mentioning you is to do a search for your brand name. You can also set up Google alerts to email you whenever a new mention is posted.

Reviews/Testimonials

Reviews and testimonials are important for SEO because they help build trust and credibility.

Testimonials are more powerful than ads as it's other people saying how great you are. If those testimonials also include keywords related to your brand and site even better! Not only will it help your search engine ranking but it could also help increase your DA Score.

Quotes

Being quoted in someone else's blog post, website or even social media is fantastic from an SEO point of view. It's showing that what you have to say has value and adds to the conversation. As such is can have a positive effect on traffic, reputation, and credibility.

Webma has a great blog post SEO Effects of Quoting? Explaining the Correct Quoting Methods in Blog Articles with loads of information about the correct way to use citations and effect they have on SEO.
