The Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles: A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Rome

What You Need to Know About This Roman Basilica

On a crisp morning in Rome, I wandered into Piazza dei Santi Apostoli and found myself face‑to‑face with one of the city’s most intriguing churches: Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli — the Basilica of the Twelve Holy Apostles. At first glance, its unassuming neoclassical façade doesn’t demand attention amidst the grandeur of Rome’s more famous basilicas. But step inside, and you’ll discover a place steeped in history, art and devotion that rewards both curious travellers and those seeking a moment of quiet reflection.

A Basilica Built for Hope and Faith

This basilica’s roots stretch back to the 6th century, when it was founded by Pope Pelagius I after the Gothic wars — a monument of thanksgiving for the liberation of Rome. It was consecrated to the Twelve Apostles, though it especially venerates Saint Philip and Saint James the Less, whose relics are preserved in the crypt beneath the altar.

Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous transformations. A major Baroque reconstruction in the early 1700s, led by Francesco and Carlo Fontana and blessed by Pope Clement XI, gave us much of what you see today. Later, in 1827, architect Giuseppe Valadier added the elegant — if deceptively simple — neoclassical façade that greets visitors now.

What to See Inside

Step through the doors, and the space opens into three grand naves framed by Corinthian columns. The walls and ceilings are alive with Baroque energy and grace, adorned with majestic frescoes and decorative stucco work typical of the Roman Baroque revival.

Here are the highlights not to miss:

Trionfo dell’Ordine Francescano

A breathtaking ceiling fresco by Baciccio (1707) depicts the triumph of the Franciscan order in vivid colour and movement — a work that feels alive when you look up.

Canova’s Monument to Pope Clement XIV

One of the most striking sculptures in the church isn’t ancient at all — it’s a monument by Antonio Canova (1787) honouring Pope Clement XIV. The serene figure adds a touch of Neoclassical elegance amidst the Baroque exuberance.

Art from Different Ages

The basilica also houses works connected to early Renaissance masters, including pieces linked to Antoniazzo Romano and fragments dating back to the 15th century.

A Place of Peace and Prayer

It’s worth remembering that this church isn’t just a tourist stop — it’s an active place of worship. Masses are celebrated daily, and pilgrims come to pray at the tombs of saints or to reflect in the quiet corners of the nave.

The crypt beneath the main altar — where the relics of Saints Philip and James the Less rest — serves as a powerful reminder of both history and faith.

Practical Tips Before You Go

• Location: Piazza dei Santi Apostoli, 51 — right in central Rome, not far from the bustle of Piazza Venezia or the Imperial Forums.

• Opening Hours & Mass Times: The basilica opens early in the morning until early evening, with multiple Masses throughout the day.

• Dress Code: As with all churches in Rome, modest attire is appreciated.

• Entry Fee: Visiting is generally free; donations are welcome.

Why It’s Worth a Visit

If you’ve seen Rome’s most famous basilicas and want something a little different — a church that combines ancient history, Baroque splendour and artistic treasures without the crowds — Basilica dei Santi XII Apostoli is a delightful discovery. It’s a place where history whispers from every corner, and each sculpture or fresco feels like a story waiting to be heard.

Whether you’re an art lover, a history enthusiast, or simply a traveller drawn to beautiful, peaceful places in the heart of a vibrant city, make time to step through the doors here — you won’t regret it.

A Guide to the Coppede Quarter, Rome: History, What to See & Practical Info

Tucked away in Rome’s elegant Trieste district lies one of the city’s most enchanting and unexpected corners — the Coppedè Quarter. Far from the ancient ruins and Baroque splendour that define much of the Eternal City, this whimsical neighbourhood feels like stepping into a fairy tale. I recently had the pleasure of exploring it with my husband, and wandering through its streets, we were both captivated by the intricate details at every turn. Designed by architect Gino Coppedè in the early 20th century, the quarter is a delightful blend of Art Nouveau, Baroque, Gothic, and even Medieval influences, offering a side of Rome few visitors ever see.

In this guide, we’ll uncover the fascinating story behind the quarter’s creation, point out the most captivating buildings and hidden details to look for, and share practical tips for getting the most out of your visit. Whether you’re a lover of architecture, photography, or simply enjoy discovering Rome’s lesser-known treasures, the Coppede Quarter promises a delightful and unforgettable detour from the city’s well-trodden paths.

A Brief History of the Coppede Quarter

The Coppede Quarter takes its name from Gino Coppedè, a visionary Florentine architect who began work on the area in 1915. His goal was to create a residential district unlike anything else in Rome — a place where imagination and artistry would blend seamlessly with everyday life.

Though construction halted during the First World War, the project resumed in the 1920s and ultimately included 18 palazzi (palaces) and 27 smaller buildings, all arranged around the charming Piazza Mincio. Coppedè’s style defies easy classification: you’ll find Tuscan towers, wrought-iron balconies, mythical creatures, and mosaic details inspired by both classical mythology and medieval romance.

Tragically, Coppedè died before seeing his masterpiece completed, but his legacy endures in every fantastical curve and carved stone of this extraordinary quarter.

What to See in the Coppede Quarter

While the Coppede Quarter is relatively compact, every corner bursts with visual surprises. Here are a few highlights you won’t want to miss:

Take your time wandering the narrow streets. You’ll notice intricate mosaics, Greek and Roman motifs, fantasy creatures, and even faces peering from stonework. Every glance reveals something new, so don’t rush — this is a place meant to be savoured.

Practical Information for Visiting

How to Get There:

• By Metro: Take Line B to Policlinico or Sant’Agnese/Annibaliano, then walk about 15–20 minutes.

• By Bus: Routes 63, 86, 92, or 223 stop nearby on Via Tagliamento.

• By Taxi: A short ride from central Rome (Termini or Piazza Barberini) takes about 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic.

Tips:

• Visit on a weekday morning for fewer crowds.

• Combine your visit with a stop at the nearby Villa Torlonia, another architectural gem with beautiful gardens.

• Bring a good camera — this is one of Rome’s most photogenic spots!

Nearby Attractions

If you’re exploring the Coppede Quarter, there are several wonderful sights and local favourites within easy walking distance:

One of Rome’s most famous nightlife venues, the Piper Club is where the city’s youth and artists gathered during the Swinging Sixties — and where, legend says, the Beatles took their spontaneous dip in the Frog Fountain. It still hosts live music and events today.

Why You’ll Love the Coppede Quarter

The Coppede Quarter isn’t one of Rome’s famous landmarks, and that’s precisely its charm. It’s quiet, imaginative, and full of surprises — a perfect reminder that the city’s beauty isn’t limited to its ancient past. Here, art, architecture, and fantasy collide in the most delightful way.

Whether you come for the history, the artistry, or simply to wander with a coffee in hand and admire the details, Coppede will capture your heart.

Add the Coppedè Quarter to your itinerary and experience a side of the Eternal City few visitors ever see. Don’t forget your camera — every corner tells a story!

When planning your trip to Rome you probably think of all the museums, archaeological sites and art work. If you're coming in the summer months you might want to find places to take a break from the city heat and get away from the crowds though. A great place to visit is Villa Borghese.

Located in the heart of the city (close to Piazza del Popolo), Villa Borghese has a lot to offer... including a boating lake!

How To Get To Villa Borghese Lake

If you arrive by metro like we did, get off at Flaminio (on the orange A line) and then it's just a short walk in pretty much a straight line to get to the lake.

The lake is circled by the Viale del Lago.

We had great fun exploring the lake. A perfect activity to do with kids but also great as a romantic spot. They even had parasols you could use if you wanted to.

I highly recommend giving it a try if you get the chance.

World's oldest toy store, opens in Rome

I've been living here in Rome since June 2001. I came here for three days and ended up staying.

I don't get the chance to go back and visit the UK as often as I'd like and so sometimes feel a bit homesick for anything and everything British.

When I was a kid I remember going to London for a day trip and visiting Hamley's. It blew me away! It was paradise for a kid like me so you can imagine how excited I was when I found out they had opened a store here in Rome.

The store is located in the beautiful Galleria Alberto Sordi on Via Del Corso (a shopping arcade named after the actor Alberto Sordi in the centre of Rome).

I went with my youngest son to check it out.

As we entered we were greeted by magicians doing magic tricks and bubble machines that fired bubbles over our heads before entering into a tunnel of lights that lead into the store.

They definitely created an atmosphere of excitement, fun and curiosity.

The store has three levels and is decorated throughout with red, white and gold.

One the ground floor there was a guy standing on a box throwing a boomerang, another guy flying a drone, and another showing how to use one of those indoor hover football disc toys.

There were also other toys set up on tables so you could see them in action and give them a try.

There was a choice of how to get from one floor to another; stairs, lift or escalator.

The first floor was toys for babies and toddlers, arts and crafts, and educational games.

On the top floor there was a huge selection of toys and a build your own cuddly toy area with a huge range of accessories.

Whilst it wasn't anywhere near as magical as the London store, it was fun to explore. Younger kids will definitely still get that "wow buzz" when visiting.

For me personally, it was nice to be able to show my son the British elements. There was a part by one of the staircases that had photos and info about the opening of the original store in London which was nice too.

As an expat I'm curious to know what stores from your childhood you'd like to revisit now. If you moved away, what would be some of the things you'd miss from back home?

It won't take long to visit. I think we were only in there for less than 15 minutes and we saw it all. That said, it was interesting and given that it's completely free of charge it's worth it if you like art.

Even the smaller churches contain some amazing artwork. One of my personal favourites is Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, located not far from the Colosseum. Not only is it home to the chains that had kept St. Peter bound in Jerusalem but it also houses one of the masterpieces of Renaissance art (and one of my personal favourites), Michelangelo Buonarroti's Moses. The details on this colossal statue are amazing and well worth seeing.
