Book Blogger Survey Results and Statistics

For the past few years I've done an annual Book Blogging Survey to see what stats look like for book blogs. 

I wanted to be able to offer and encourage more transparency about the statistics of book bloggers by trying to get a better idea about average book blogging statistics.

Here you can find the results for 2022, 2023 and 2024.

So, welcome to the Book Blogging in 2025 Survey Results! 

As I did in previous years, I'll be comparing my findings with the results from past years to see if the same answers still apply in 2025.

Blogging Statistics in 2025

A few of my own blogging stats

In order to be completely transparent with you all here's a few of my own statistics for this blog. To give you more context, although I started blogging back in 2006, I moved my blog to Blogger in 2012. "All time" is therefore from 2012 to date. 

I should also point out that my blog is now a lifestyle blog and not exclusively limited to bookish content (although books remain my main topic). 

All time views to blog: 4,265,726 views

All time most viewed post: Things That Should Be In Every Blog Post (published August 2021) with over 157K views.

Most viewed post so far from 2025: December 2024 Book Bloggers Round Up Post (published 3 January 2025) with 647 views. 

Second most viewed book related post so far from 2025: First Line Fridays 17th January (published 17 January 2025) with 341 views.

Most viewed book review of all time: Evolving Elizah: Initiatum by CJ Hall (published 30 April 2021) with 8.4k views

Most viewed book review so far from 2025: Martin Luther King Jr. by Mary Nhin (published 5 February 2025) with 238 views

Most viewed book spotlight of all time: Pawnshop of Stolen Dreams by Victoria Williamson (published 9 June 2023) with 8.5k views

Most viewed book spotlight so far from 2025: Notorious Virtues by Alwyn Hamilton (published 2 April 2025) with 176 views.

Most viewed book tag of all time: I Love That Book's Show Tag (published 2 October 2018) with 9.45k views.

Most viewed book tag so far from 2025: I am the Reader Tag (published 8 July 2025) with 62 views.

Majority of blog traffic comes from: Google search.

Book Blogging 2025 Survey

Now it's time to see how this years results match up with previous years. 

I set up a thread of polls on my Twitter profile, just like I did in previous years, using the same four questions.

How long have you been book blogging?

This year shows a slight increase in the percentage of new book blogs compared to last year 4% in 2024 (It was 4.1% in 2022 and 6.3% in 2023). 

I'm happy to see that the 5-10 years category has had the highest percentage this year and that the over 10 years category has grown too. This is good news as it means a lot of those same book bloggers are still going. Experienced, dedicated book bloggers still sharing their love of reading! 

How many page views do you get per month on average?

The highest percentage remains the less than 5K category (it was 64% in 2024). 5K-10K and 10K-20K have both increased, however, the over 20K category is less than last year (16% in 2024). 

There are numerous reasons why you might experience a decrease in page views and whilst some; posting quality content, correct SEO, promotion etc... are things you'll need to work on others aren't caused by the blogger e.g. changes in search engine algorithms or evolving user behaviour.

On average, how many comments do you get on your blog each day?

0-5 86.4% 

6-10 9.1% 

11-20 0% 

Over 20 4.5%

This continues to be one of the areas where the majority continues to struggle. The 0-5 category has consistently been the majority each year (88% in 2022,  87% in 2023 and 84% in 2024).  

Where does most of your blog traffic come from?

Search engines 57.1% 

Social media links 38.1% 

Newsletter subscribers 0% 

Other 4.8%

Search engines continue to be the highest source of traffic for book blogs with social media in second place again. 

This is the second year in a row that Newsletters have got 0% (2% in 2022, 4.3% in 2023 and 0% in 2024). This could be an indication that Newsletters are no longer worth investing in. 

The Other category (14.3% in 2022, 12.8% in 2023 and 5.9% in 2024) has also been reduced yet again.

No matter where you are in your book blogging journey, know that you're not alone. Many of us face similar challenges, even those who’ve been at it for years. So if you’re feeling stuck or discouraged, hang in there.

Before we jump into the rest of the list we need to consider the most important thing. You need to love what you do. You need to be passionate about the topic(s) you blog about. If you're not, not only will your lack of enthusiasm come across in your content but, you'll also find that your motivation and inspiration will dry up pretty fast too. 

I've been blogging for a very long time now and I'm still full of ideas for content and constantly looking for new ways to improve. This is because I love blogging. It's a passion project for me. Even when I'm not writing posts I'm researching the technical aspects like SEO, or brainstorming more ideas for content I'd like to cover. It never feels like a burden because I enjoy it so much. 

If your main reason for blogging is that you love it, it's also easier to not put too much weight on the negatives. Trust me, I've had months where traffic has been slow and whilst it's not a great feeling you need to use it to motivate you to keep going because I've also had some of my best traffic months just a few months later. 

The same applies to DA score. Domain Authority is effected by so many different elements that it's normal for it to fluctuate over time. It's all part of being a blogger.

Now let's look at the the main reasons why blogs fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.

1. Lack of Consistency

One of the most common reasons blogs fail is a lack of consistent posting. You may have started with a bang, publishing post after post, but then life gets busy or motivation fades. This is a slippery slope. Readers crave fresh content, and once they realise you’re not posting regularly, they’ll stop visiting.

How to avoid it:

Create a content calendar and stick to it! Even if you can only manage one post a week, that’s better than random posts that show up when you have the time. Consistency builds trust, and it also helps with SEO (search engine optimisation), which we’ll get into later.

2. Ignoring Your Audience

Blogs are all about your audience. If you write posts that only interest you, you might miss the mark with the people you want to attract. Blogs fail when they’re not created with a clear audience in mind. As we established before, your passion is important, but you do need to think about your readers too. What do they need, want, and care about?

How to avoid it:

Know who you’re writing for. Before you write a single word, define your target audience. Are they beginners or experts? What problems do they face? What questions do they have? Tailor your content to answer those questions. Your readers will stick around when they feel heard.

3. Not Optimizing for SEO

You can write the best post in the world, but if no one can find it, it’s pretty much a waste of effort. That’s where SEO comes in. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and it helps your blog rank higher in search results. Without it, your blog might as well be a hidden treasure buried in the depths of the internet.

How to avoid it:

Learn the basics of SEO. Start with using relevant keywords throughout your post. Think about what people might type into Google when they’re looking for your content. Also, make sure to optimise your images, use internal and external links, and write engaging meta descriptions.

4. Lack of Promotion

Just hitting "publish" and hoping for the best isn’t enough. A blog needs promotion—through social media, email newsletters, or even paid advertising—to get the word out.

How to avoid it:

Be proactive in promoting your content. Share your posts on social media platforms where your audience hangs out. Encourage readers to share your posts with their friends. Consider building an email list to notify your followers whenever you publish something new. The more you promote, the more likely your blog will grow.

5. Not Engaging with Readers

Blogging isn’t just about writing; it’s also about building relationships. If you ignore comments or fail to respond to feedback, you miss out on connecting with your readers. A blog that doesn’t engage with its audience can feel disconnected and impersonal, which makes readers less likely to return.

How to avoid it:

Respond to comments, emails, and social media mentions. Ask your readers questions in your posts to spark conversation. The more you engage with your community, the stronger your blog’s relationship with your audience will become.

6. Not Being Patient

Success doesn’t happen overnight. It’s easy to get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. You might check your analytics and feel disheartened by low traffic or slow growth. Many bloggers give up too soon, but the key is persistence.

How to avoid it:

Understand that building a successful blog takes time. Keep learning, improving, and creating valuable content. Celebrate the small wins, like your first comment or a slight increase in traffic, and remember that slow and steady wins the race.

Conclusion:

Blogging can be incredibly rewarding, but it requires dedication, patience, and a little know-how. To avoid the common pitfalls that cause blogs to fail, stay consistent, know your audience, optimise for SEO, and engage with your readers. Most importantly, stick with it. Success takes time, but with the right strategies, you can build a blog that thrives and stands the test of time. Happy blogging!

Welcome to my April/May 2025 wrap up. A lot has happened over the past couple of months so here's a break down of what I got up to.

Unfortunately we started April with a funeral. The dad of my sons friends died. It came as a huge surprise to all of us and definitely brought home how everything can change in a moment. 

My youngest had his Invalsi exams at school so that was a little stressful. He's now preparing for his final exams which will be taking place in June. Can't believe he's so close to being done with middle school. These past three years have just flown by! 

Also in April, I had some issues with my Kindle reading app. There was a glitch and it removed all my books from my app. Luckily they were all still on my account so I didn't lose any but it's meant that I have to manual add them back onto my app again. On the upside it's given me a chance to rediscover books I'd forgotten I had on there that I still haven't read yet. 

I've also been having numerous health problems but I'll go into more detail about that later in the post. 

Wrapping Up April and May: What Happened

My health has been a bit of an ongoing disaster for a long time now. 

I gave myself a goal to meditate every day in April. The idea being to improve my mindfulness and destress. As I'm a beginner I decided to use some apps to help me. 

As I already had the FitOn app installed in my phone I started with that one. They have a variety of different types of video meditations and affirmations to choose from. Unfortunately I didn't complete the whole month but I'll be reporting back soon with my full review of each app I tried. 

April wasn't great for my health but May was worse. I got hospitalised twice in the intensive ward, was in a lot of pain, and couldn't eat or even drink water for over a week. 

I'm incredibly grateful for all the amazing staff at the hospital who took care of me. Especially my doctor who realised straight away at our control visit that something was seriously wrong and sent me straight to the emergency room.

Turns out I have an extra long colon and diverticulitis which caused multiple blockages in my intestine. It is also the reason I have chronic gastritis and suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease. It also explains why my immune system is constantly struggling. In fact it explains a lot in general when it comes to my health issues. 

This is a big deal. I finally know what the cause of my chronic health problems is. It's taken 44 years but I've got the diagnosis! At least now I know what I'm dealing with and have specialist help to manage it.

I still need to have more tests done and I'm also still waiting on the results of the biopsies they did during my gastroscopy. Hopefully I'll have those soon. I'll also be having routine control visits from now on.

Blogging

Traffic for April: 88,834 page-views

Current DA score: 28

During April I was trying to get back into working on improving my website, updating older posts and checking for errors, broken links etc... 

I went on Google Search Console and discovered that some of my links weren't indexed by Google. I've since been going through to make sure all my links result as indexed and submitting those that aren't. 

Traffic for May:  54,347 page-views

Number of blog posts published in May: 12

Travel

Whilst I did manage to go briefly to the 1st May concert held at San Giovanni this year, we did have to leave early. My health just hasn't allowed for getting out and about.  

Fitness

I gave myself a goal of walking over 10,000 steps every day in April and I'm happy to report that I managed it most days (some I went over so that gave me an average of over 10K a day by the end of the month even if I didn't quite make it to 10K on a few days). 

I've discovered that I actually really like walking. Whilst most of my steps were done outside I did try a few of these easy walking workouts too.

I also gave myself a goal of 100 squats every day in April which I also completed.

Unfortunately exercising of any kind wasn't an option in May.
