As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm taking part in the RhyPiBoMo challenge this month.

#RhyPiBoMo: The Challenge so far, www.JoLinsdell.com

Some excellent blog posts from this week at https://angiekarcher.wordpress.com. Here are my favourites:
  • Day 17 Miranda Paul - Very interesting piece about rhythmic non-fiction.

  • Day 18 Lori Mortensen - Good points about the importance of having a good story arch.

  • Day 19 Rene’ Diane Aube- This was one of my favourites so far this month. Loved her storyboard ideas.
Read this week:

My favourite read from this week was "JULIA LOVES DOLLS (Adorable, Rhyming Bedtime Story/Picture Book for Beginner Readers About Sharing and Birthdays, Ages 2-8)" by Sally Huss.

Other stuff:

I also came across this article at http://picturebookden.blogspot.it/2012/03/how-not-to-write-rhyming-picture-book.html that looks at how *NOT* to write a rhyming picture book.

Are you taking part in RhyPiBoMo too? What was your favourite book from this week?

If you're doing the challenge I hope you'll consider reading my rhyming children's picture story books; Out and About at the Zoo, and Fairy May.

This weeks sketches for my Disney Illustration Study, are Wall-e and EVE.

Favourite blog posts from this week at https://angiekarcher.wordpress.com

  • Day 8:  J. Patrick Lewis took a look at poetry forms and gave a lot of food for thought.

  • Day 11: Pat Zietlow Miller. Just the sentence “Well, if it doesn’t work, I don’t have to show it to anyone” makes this a winner in my book. She also gave some sound advice about plot.

This week I read:

The Chick Who Could Not Kick! by Tim Zak

Quick, Quick, I Feel Sick! by Allira Bell

Goodnight Ocean by Michelle Zimmerman

Things You Might See on an African Safari: A Counting Journey Through Africa by Louise Lintvelt

I also came across http://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poems/funny/rhyme/ which is a website full of poems (with a category for rhyme). One poem from the site that I found thought provoking was War of Words http://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/war-of-the-words.

Are you taking part in RhyPiBoMo too? What's been your favourite book so far?

If you're doing the challenge I hope you'll consider reading my rhyming children's picture story books; Out and About at the Zoo, and Fairy May.

Yesterday marked the start of IndieReCon, an online conference organised by the Alliance of Independent Authors. And what a start it was! The live webinar events were packed full of great information and tips.

#IndieReCon Day 1, www.JoLinsdell.com

I'm still trying to catch up with all of the webinars but my favourite so far has been Content Marketing 101 with Jane Friedman. This webinar was a mother-load of information about content marketing! Here's a few bits that stood out (just click to tweet ;)).

The funnel is understanding how readers find you & what they do next. @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

Use social media for things that are easy to say "yes" to. (Usually free things) @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

Remember you have to give support to get support. @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

Marketing should feel like part of your creative practice. @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

Many writers jump into the business without knowing what their why is. @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

"The mark of a serious writer is not caring what readers think." -Will Self @janefriedman at #IndieReCon

Other stuff:

As well as the great webinars I also came across this blog post which features awesome success tips from IndieReCon speakers at http://www.selfpublishingadvice.org/how-they-do-it-preview-of-success-tips-from-indierecon-speakers/

You can find out more about the event at http://indierecon.org/

This week my Disney Illustration study is dedicated to some of the "object" characters from Beauty and the Beast.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I'm taking part in the RhyPiBoMo challenge this month.

#RhyPiBoMo: The Challenge so far, www.JoLinsdell.com

As the second week comes to an end I thought I'd give you an update on how it's been so far.

Firstly, I just have to mention the awesome blog posts over at https://angiekarcher.wordpress.com/ (the home of RhyPiBoMo). Each day a guest shares tips, tricks, and advice about writing rhyme. My favourite posts include:

  • Tim McCanna (Day 1) who did a great job of kicking off the event.
  • Marilyn Singer (Day 4) with her myths about rhyme.
  • Julie Hedlund (Day 6) who shared some good tips.

As part of the challenge is to read children's poems, I did a search and found this site http://www.kidsgen.com/rhymes_and_poems/ with a good selection. The winning website so far though has to be http://www.poetry4kids.com/. One of my favourites is "I Tried to Take a Selfie".

Julia Donaldson is winning in the best rhyming reads so far. The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo's Child are both awesome books.

If you're doing the challenge I hope you'll consider reading my rhyming children's picture story books; Out and About at the Zoo, and Fairy May.

As you probably know by now, I'm in full prep mode for this years Promo Day event that will be happening on Saturday 30th May at www.PromoDay.info. As I like to try and improve the event each year I've been going over the feedback, comments, and testimonials from past events. One thing that has been mentioned by a couple of people is the sizing of the website i.e. it doesn't fit their screen. There were actually only 2 or 3 people that had this issue but that still makes it a problem in my book and so I'm working on resolving the issue.

I checked the website on my smartphone, tablet, laptop, fixed computer, and MAC, and it looked fine on all of them. This made me think that either the problem was 1) specific to the users computer settings or 2) only an issue on certain sized screens.

The first thing I did was make sure that the website was mobile friendly. I then checked it at http://www.studiopress.com/responsive/ to make sure all was working as it should be. This website allows you to insert your website url and then it checks and gives you a preview of how it looks on different mobile devices. All good. www.PromoDay.info is mobile friendly on all devices.

The next step was to check how it was showing on different desktops. Like I said before, I didn't find any issues when checking on my own various devices but then again mine are all pretty mainstream sizing.

Anyway, I went to http://quirktools.com/screenfly/ and inserted the website url. Turns out the website is fine until I go up to 20" desktop (that's 1600 x 900) and larger. This means that user on a screen bigger than 20" get scroll bars in order to view the whole website. Not a big problem as I made sure the website was centered (notice the space on the left and right of the screen), but still not perfect.

This is how the website looks on a 15" desktop:

Making Your Website Fit the Screen on All Devices

As you can see the whole page fits the screen.

This is what came up when I did 23":

Making Your Website Fit the Screen on All Devices

Not good. Only a part of the page is viewable. You then have to use scroll bars at the bottom and right hand side in order to view the rest of the page. Whilst this isn't a major problem (the most important elements are viewable e.g. all of the navigation tabs), it isn't ideal either. I'm now looking into ways to solve the issue and make the website automatically fit to all screen sizes.

I did find this app for Chrome that allows you to resize your desktop to different screen dimensions https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/window-resizer/kkelicaakdanhinjdeammmilcgefonfh. This means that those of you that get scroll bars can change to view the website at 15" (1366 x 768) and have it fit your screen.

I hope to be able to come up with a solution as soon as possible. If you know how to resolve the problem please get in touch. Thanks in advance for your help.

UPDATE:

I think I found the solution :)

I inserted this html code under <head>

<meta content='width=device-width, initial-scale=1, maximum-scale=1' name='viewport'/>

I've had a few friends with 23" and above check the website and they've all said it looks good. No more horizontal scroll bars.

Thanks to everyone who helped. You rock!

For this weeks sketches for my Disney Illustration Study, I decided to take a look at some classic Disney characters.

I signed up this week to take part in the Rhyming Picture Book Month Challenge AKA RhyPiBoMo. If you'd like to join me you can register here: https://angiekarcher.wordpress.com/rhypibomo-2015-registration/

And now to show off my participant badge:

#RhyPiBoMo - Signed up and ready for some rhyming fun!

As my own books, Out and About at the Zoo, and Fairy May, are both rhyming picture story books, it's not hard to see why this challenge appeals to me. Btw, I hope you'll add them to your reading list during the challenge ;)

So what's RhyPiBoMo all about?

Here's the pledge:

#RhyPiBoMo - Signed up and ready for some rhyming fun!

See, I told you it sounded fun. So will you be joining me? Got some suggestions of good rhyming picture books I should add to my to-read list?
This weeks sketch for my Disney Illustration Study is Maleficent.
