My #TBR List for #ARCAugust

Another month, another challenge ;) Next month I'm participating in the ARC August challenge, where the goal is to read as many ARC books as possible during the month of August.

I figured I'd aim for a book per week (I may add others if I finish these).

Here's my TBR list for the challenge:

The Judas Game by Ethan Cross

My TBR List for ARC August

Pub Date: 4th Oct 2016

When a correctional officer climbs to the top of his watchtower and opens fire on the inmates and guards, federal investigator Marcus Williams and serial killer Francis Ackerman Jr. must join forces again to unearth the truth behind the incident. What they find is a serial killer using the prison as his hunting grounds. But the Judas Killer's ambitions don't end with a few murders. He wants to go down in history and has no reason left to live.

With Ackerman undercover among the inmates and Marcus tracking down the mastermind on the outside, the team must learn the identity of the Judas Killer and stop a full-scale uprising that he's orchestrated. But the more they learn about what's happening at the prison and why the more enemies they must face. From inside the overrun facility, Marcus and Ackerman must save the hostages and stop an elaborate escape attempt while trying to determine how a rival corporation, the leader of one of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations, and an inmate with no identity only known as Demon fit into the Judas Killer's plans.
Launching a bold new cycle of novels featuring The Shepherd Organization, The Judas Game is searing, mesmerizing fiction—it's Ethan Cross at his very best.
I'm super excited about this one as I'm a huge fan of Ethan Cross and the Shepherd series.

The Woman Who Lost Her Mojo by Carol Wyer

My TBR List for ARC August

Pub Date: 23rd Sept 2016

It’s time for Charlie to ditch the life that’s been dragging her down in this romantic, funny, feel good read!

Since splitting from her husband, Charlie’s life has been stuck in a rut. Best friend Mercedes will do anything to put a smile back on Charlie’s face and so draws up a bucket list of things to help Charlie recover her mojo.
Sure enough, as Charlie works her way through the list, belly dancing and bungee jumping, she makes new friends and even begins to attract some male attention.
Journalist Jake gives Charlie butterflies but he almost seems too perfect – there must be a reason why he’s single. Perhaps Rob would be a better bet – yes he’s short and he drinks too much - but a girl can’t have everything can she?
The final challenge on Charlie’s list looms large. Can Charlie complete it and prove to herself that life is for living, whatever may have happened in the past? And can Jake get through to Charlie and stop her from settling for the single life or, the wrong man?
I love the idea of this book. Makes me want to write up my own mojo bucket list.

The Off Season by Colleen Thompson

My TBR List for ARC August

Pub Date: 13th Sept 2016

Winter winds off the Atlantic have turned the tourist mecca of Seaside Creek, New Jersey, into a ghost town. Dr. Christina Paxton, however, is growing accustomed to living with ghosts. Recently widowed, the emergency room physician has returned to the shore with her young daughter, house-sitting a sprawling beachside Victorian home. One night, her two-year-old calls her by a name that makes Christina’s blood run cold and sends her thoughts spiraling back thirty years.

Deeply unnerved, and certain someone else is in the house, she flees with her child into the cold night, only to come face-to-face with Chief Harris Bowers, a former classmate with whom Christina has a complicated history. Now divorced, Harris hopes to mend their past, but Christina is wary of being played for a fool again. As threats emerge, Christina and her small family find themselves in grave danger. It seems there is no one she can put her trust in—least of all herself.
I love a good mystery thriller, and this one sounds interesting.

The Storykiller by Humfrey Hunter

My TBR List for ARC August

Pub Date: 29th Sept 2016

Some secrets are worth killing for...

Jack Winter was once an idealistic and brilliant news reporter who broke the biggest stories around. But after wrongly blaming himself for a young girl’s murder he changed sides and began killing stories for the rich and powerful, protecting them from exactly the kind of journalist he used to be.
When a new client drags Jack into a lethal world of corruption and long-buried secrets, he finds himself wishing he could turn back the clock, because now he is fighting not just for headlines but his life.
The début novel from Humfrey Hunter, The Storykiller is a new addition to the modern fiction traditions of Robert Harris, Harlan Coben and the House of Cards trilogy.
Secrets, corruption, murder mystery... this book sounds good.

BookTubeAThon 2016 Day 7: The Final Day & The Book Cover Stories Challenge

I can't believe it's day 7 already. This week went by so fast. I didn't manage to read all 7 books on my list for this week, but I did have a blast taking part in my first ever BookTubeAThon :)

I'm still slowly working my way through Emma by Jane Austen. It's an awesome book so far though and so worth it even if it did slow me down considerably.

The Book Cover Stories Challenge

Today's challenge is to describe the plot of a book using the book covers of other books. I chose one of my favourite reads Carrots by Colleen Helme.

Watch my Book Cover Story here:

#BookTubeAThon2016 Day 6: Literary Road Trip Challenge & Reading Progress

I can't believe this week is nearly over. Absolutely loving my first BookTubeAThon experience.

Here's a summary of my progress so far:

The Challenges:

1) A book with yellow on the cover - Imperfect Chemistry - Finished
2) Read only after sunset - Love at First Date by Susan Hatler - Finished
3) A book discovered through BookTube - Still not decided on this one :/
4) A book by a favourite author - Emma by Jane Austen - Currently reading
5) A book that is older than you - Emma - Currently reading
6) Read a book and watch it's movie adaption - Emma - Currently reading (and will be watching the film tonight)
7) Read 7 books - Current total 3 finished (Royal Games, Imperfect Chemistry, and Love at First Date)

Other books from my TBR list:

The Domino Game - Currently reading
The 7th Day
Stardom

As tomorrow is the last day it's not looking likely that I'll meet all the challenges. Jane Austen has slowed me down considerably... but is totally worth it.

I have also been reading, and reviewing, some ARCs of children's books I was sent by publishers via Net Galley this week and so technically have gone way over 7 books read... although most of those had an average of 36 pages and so can hardly be counted towards my total ;)

#BookTubeAThon2016 Day 5: Book Rainbows and Reading Progress

Day 5 of BookTubeAThon is the hardest yet. It's super hot here in Rome which isn't helping either. I'm also tired from missing out on a lot of sleep over the past two weeks. I'm not giving up though.

Here's a summary of my progress so far:

Books read: 2
Currently reading: Emma by Jane Austen (day time reading), and Love at First Date by Susan Hatler (after sunset reading).

The Book Rainbow Challenge

Ok so this isn't actually what today's challenge was, as I don't have enough colourful books, but we decided to put our own twist on it and join in the fun anyway with our own alternative version.

Obviously I won't be entering it into the contest, but it was fun to do anyway :)

#BookTubeAThon 2016 Day 4: Book Spine Poetry Challenge

WOW it's day 4 of BookTubeAThon already. This week is flying by so fast!

http://amzn.to/29OT4Ue
So far I've read two books from my TBR list; Royal Games, and Imperfect Chemistry, (both awesome reads) and started reading Emma by Jane Austen. I've only read the 1st chapter which according to my kindle app means I'm at 3%. I have at least started it now though. Emma is going to help me knock off several of the big 7 BookTubeAThon challenges and also means I get to watch the film too.

As we were at the pool all day today I didn't have much time to dedicate to reading or BookTube in general, but I did manage to throw together a quick video to meet today's challenge.... by far the hardest challenge yet...

The Book Spine Poetry Challenge

http://amzn.to/2ayw09g
The challenge was to come up with a poem using only book titles, with a maximum of 10 books used.

This challenge was hard for a number of reasons:

1) My brain was fried from swimming under hot sun all day.

2) I don't own that many print books anymore as do a lot of my reading on my ipad now.

3) Have you ever tried to write a poem using just book titles before?!

Anyway I did it, and can tick off today's challenge as done. As this is my first year doing BookTubeAThon I'm aiming to complete all the challenges. So far, so good ;)

Watch the video to hear my poem:

#BookTubeAthon2016 Day 3: Book Slip In Challenge and Imperfect Chemistry

It's day 3 of BookTubeAThon and so far I'm totally rocking it! I'm on a mission to do all the challenges as this is my first year doing BookTubeAThon.

So far, so good :)

The Book Slip In Challenge

Today's challenge was to create a scene using book titles in the dialogue. Not an easy task, but a fun one.

Watch the video (but prepare yourself for some seriously bad acting ;)):

#BookTubeAthon2016 Day 3: Book Slip In Challenge and Imperfect Chemistry

I was up super late last night reading Imperfect Chemistry by Mary Frame... which was totally worth it btw. I finished the book, bringing my running total to 2 completed books so far this week.

About the book:

Lucy London puts the word genius to shame. Having obtained her PhD in microbiology by the age of twenty, she's amassed a wealth of knowledge, but one subject still eludes her-people. The pendulum of passions experienced by those around her both confuses and intrigues her, so when she's offered a grant to study emotion as a pathogen, she jumps on the opportunity. When her attempts to come up with an actual experiment quickly drop from lackluster to nonexistent, she's given a choice: figure out how to conduct a groundbreaking study on passion, or lose both the grant and her position at the university. Put on leave until she can crack the perfect proposal, she finds there's only one way she can study emotions-by experiencing them herself. Enter Jensen Walker, Lucy's neighbor and the one person on the planet she finds strangely and maddeningly appealing. Jensen's life is the stuff of campus legend, messy, emotional, complicated-in short, the perfect starting point for Lucy's study. When her tenaciousness wears him down and he consents to help her, sparks fly. To her surprise, Lucy finds herself battling with her own emotions, as foreign as they are intense. With the clock ticking on her deadline, Lucy must decide what's more important: analyzing her passions...or giving in to them?

I'm giving this one a 5 star rating. I loved the characters, especially Lucy with all her quirky ways. If you like YA, romance, easy reads, you'll like this.

ARC August

Also, just to let you all know, I'm now official signed up to take part in the ARC August challenge next month too. You can find full detail about that here: https://lifewritingsofareader.wordpress.com/2016/07/18/arc-august-challenge/. I'm still working on picking which books I'll be reading for that but should have an update for you soon with my official TBR list.

#BookTubeAThon Day 2: Reading Progress PLUS Book Location Recreation Challenge

BookTubeAThon Day 2: My Reading Progress

I had high hopes of reading another whole book in a day, but today has been a slow day. I did at least start book 2 on my TBR list Imperfect Chemistry. So far not bad. The best word to describe it so far would probably be... cute.

This book has some yellow on the cover (even if you can't see it very well in this photo. It's on the inside of the heart ;)) and so let's me tick off another point from the 7 main challenges.

#BookTubeAThon Day 2: Reading Progress PLUS Book Location Recreation Challenge

Today's challenge: Book Location Recreation

I also managed to do a very quick sketch for the "Book Location Recreation" challenge.

Today is the first day of BookTubeAThon 2016, and I've jumped right on into the fun. I seriously couldn't wait for the challenges to start :)

Book Domino

The challenge for today was to build a book domino. For the first challenge I armed myself with some little helpers (my kids). The domino challenge is far from easy. The books just did not want to stay up long enough! We did it in the end though, and had fun trying :)

Watch the video:

Book 1

My first book for BookTubeAThon is Royal Games by Sariah Wilson, which I started reading pretty much at midnight and finished it by the end of the day. As a lot of the book was read during the night I'm counting this one towards the Read after sunset part of the challenge.

I got a free copy of this book from Net Galley and it is my official first book read for BookTubeAThon 2016. What a way to begin the challenge! Hope the rest of my picks for this week are as good as this one was.

I'm giving it a 5 star rating.

About the book:

Genesis Kelley didn’t just get her heart broken. The aspiring veterinarian had it crushed in front of millions of viewers on the dating reality show Marry Me. Now, just as she’s getting her life and dignity back together, her royal heartbreaker, Prince Rafael of Monterra, has landed in Frog Hollow, Iowa. And he’s renting out her aunt’s guest cottage.
Deceiving TV audiences for his brother’s sake cost Rafe the girl of his dreams. But he’s going to fix it, even if it means moving from his mountain-kingdom home to small-town Iowa. A prince doesn’t give up on his rightful princess—especially once he realizes Genesis is in deeper danger than she knows.
Between fixing her truck, whisking her off to Monterra for a whirlwind date, and charming the entire town, Rafe is thawing the ice around Genesis’s heart. Will it be enough to earn back her trust, protect her from her past—and sweep her into a real-life fairy tale?

I absolutely loved this book! Definitely a 5 star, and I will be checking out other books by this author in the future. I officially have a fictional crush on Rafe. Strong, defined characters. Well written. Had me rooting for Rafe and Genesis the whole way through, so much so that I almost forgot about the bad guy, them BAM! Highly recommend.

#CampNaNoWriMo: The Half Way Mark

Throughout July I'm taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo. I'm using the challenge to work on an old November NaNoWriMo project that had the working title of Twice. My goal is to rewrite the manuscript and end up with a completed 50K novel b the end of the month.

As today is the 15th July, today marks the half way mark of this challenge. Here's a recap of how it's been going so far:

The first week was awesome! The words were flying, and I got ahead of my word count goal, despite having a couple of slow days along the way. In fact, I discovered that having slow days is totally fine. For example, on the first Sunday of the month museums and some tourists sites are completely free to visit here in Rome, and so I took my kids to explore the Palatino. We had a lovely day exploring old ruins, visiting the museum, and learning about Roman history. We even got to hear the sound check for the Pink Floyd concert that was happening in the evening at Circo Massimo (located right below the Palatino). All in all a pretty awesome day. Not so great for my word count though. In fact I wrote nothing that day.

Here's a few pics from the trip:

Palatino, Rome, Italy #Travel

Palatino, Rome, Italy #Travel

Week number 2 involved slow days too. Unfortunately it didn't balance itself out with turbo days though and so I went from being head with my word count to falling behind. I know that a couple of good days will put me back on track though. Not in panic mode yet!

With the kids being off school for the summer break my days are pretty full as it is. Most of my writing has been done in the evening once they're in bed asleep. Only problem with writing in the evening is that I spend all day trying to make them tired so they go to bed, and then I'm tired too.... probably even more than they are.

We have made some fun creative projects together though, including these fab toilet roll puppets. We spent the morning making them, and then the kids spent the afternoon planning a puppet show with them :) Apparently we need to make more of these (these need more characters for their puppet shows).

Toilet roll puppets #CreativeKids #Kidscraft

Although I'm now playing catch up with my word count, I have made huge progress in the first half of this challenge that will, hopefully, mean I meet my goal of 50k by the end of the month. I've done a lot of brainstorming, planning, and general thinking about the story. I've outlined some sub plots that I'm writing in, developed some of the secondary characters, and made some big changes to the initial story idea. One big change is the title of the book. Twice just doesn't fit anymore. The book has taken a new direction and so I've been coming up with ideas for a new title. I'm still not 100% decided on what the title will be, but I've narrowed it down for just a few.

This is my current word count:

#CampNaNoWriMo: The Half Way Mark

Are you doing CampNaNoWriMo? How's it going so far?

Book Review: Landry in Like by Krysten Lindsay Hager

I got sent an ecopy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I'm giving this book 5 stars.

About the book:

"Things seem to be going well in Landry Albright’s world—she’s getting invited to be on local talk shows to talk about her modeling career, her best friends have her back, and her boyfriend Vladi has becoming someone she can truly count on…and then everything changes.
Suddenly it seems like most of the girls in school are into hanging out at a new teen dance club, while Landry just wants to spend her weekends playing video games and baking cup-cakes at sleepovers. Then, Yasmin McCarty, the most popular girl in school, starts to come between Landry’s friendship with her best friend Ashanti. Things take a turn when Yasmin tells Vladi that Landry is interested in another boy. Can Landry get her relationships with Ashanti and Vladi back or will she be left behind?"

Hager is definitely in touch with the teen age group! This book took me right back to being a teen. I highly recommend this book for those in the young adult age group, and anyone else that likes YA fiction.

Library Reads: What the kids picked

I know, I'm super late sharing this Library Reads update. I completely forgot [slaps wrists]. Worst still is the fact that this may be the last Library Reads update for a while as the library will be closing for part of the summer. We will resume our updates in September though so you won't have to wait too long ;)

In the meantime we will still be reading and reporting back. I have loads of books on my ipad kindle app for the kids, and so we'll be working through those for a new video series called the Kids Summer Reading series. It will be a chance to get them experimenting with ebooks. I'm really interested to see what they think about reading in e-format as opposed to print. Should be fun.

Anyway, back to Library Reads....

This is what we picked:

- My Big Brother
- A Single Pearl

Have you read these books? What did you think of them? Let me know in the comments below.
My #BookTubeAThon2016 #TBR List

I'm doing BookTubeAThon!

I'm super excited about joining in the BookTubeAThon challenge 18th-24th July 2016. This will be my first time ever doing the challenge, and choosing which books to read for it was not an easy task.
My #BookTubeAThon2016 #TBR List
The Challenges:

1) A book with yellow on the cover
2) Read only after sunset
3) A book discovered through BookTube
4) A book by a favourite author
5) A book that is older than you
6) Read a book and watch it's movie adaption
7) Read 7 books

My TBR

This is what I've come up with so far though for my TBR (to be read) list... The numbers next to the book title show which challenges it will meet:

Royal Games
The Domino Game
Love at First Date 4
Emma 4, 5, 6, and probably 2 and 7 as well ;)
The 7th Day 1
Imperfect Chemistry 1
Stardom 1

If I'm honest all these books will probably be read at least in part at night as I do most of my reading in the late evening. If I read them all I can tick off number 7 too.

I still need a book discovered through BookTube (reason why explained in video). Please help me out with that one as would love to complete the whole challenge ;)

Looking forward to connecting with other BookTubers during the challenge and finding lots of new books to add to my TBR list for post challenge reading too. Are you taking part this year?
