Welcome back to another Library Reads. Apologies for the late posting. With the end of the school year upon us life has been pretty hectic of late.
This is what the boys picked:
- Buster the Kangaroo
- Dora's Rainbow Egg Hunt
Have you read these books with your kids? What did they think of them? Got a suggestion for a book we should check out? Leave a comment below.

We finally made it back to the library, and I finally got round to filming Library Reads... and then ended up posting late because I forgot to upload it. I'm rubbish I know, but better late than never ;)
The good thing about having not gone to the library for several weeks is that they had new books in stock (they also got some new DVDs and so I introduced the kids to Star Wars this week too ;)).
As most of the funds go towards buying new books in Italian (we live in Italy and so it makes sense), they don't often add more English titles to their shelves. Seeing some new titles on the shelves in our favourite section was therefore a particularly nice surprise.
This week the kids picked:
- Coyote Sings to the Moon
- Into the Forest
Watch the video to see what we thought of them:
When was the last time you went to the library?

One of the things I loved most about this years Promo Day was how real everyone was. Everyone was sharing tips, tricks, and strategies, but all without sales pitches and promises. They were honest and down to Earth.
As creatives we love the freedom to express ourselves, and that should happen in all aspects of our work. Whether we're writing, drawing, or marketing and building our brand. In fact, when we step out of the mainstream mould that's when the magic happens.
This morning as I was checking my emails I read one I'd received from Regina from http://byregina.com/ (she has some awesome stuff on her website by the way, and I highly recommend signing up for her newsletter). Well, this mornings email was entitled "Don't leave the Matrix just to join an internet cult". It really hit home as it backed up some of the points raised during Saturdays Promo Day event.
"Don't let someone else define your world and your life for you."
It can be so easy to get sucked into the tunnel of advice that we forget about our own goals and feel like we're doing something wrong. We get obsessed with figures and spend our time searching for ways to increase our followings and feel bad when we don't get the results we've seen others get. Why are they getting awesome results when we're doing the same things and seeing nothing?
I'm guilty of being sucked into the tunnel, and I'm sure that you are too to a certain extent. Well, it's time to change that.
I'd love to be making 100K+ a month (heck, I'd like to be making that in a year!), but it's not realistic. Sure there are people doing it. They are usually very vocal about their success too. They pull you into their "friends" group and offer advice on how you too can see results like theirs. When you don't though you feel bad. You feel confused. You feel like you're doing something wrong....
Guess what? You are. You forgot about the most important asset you have. YOU. If you love what you do, and share about it with genuine enthusiasm people will feel your vibe. By not falling into the mainstream mould you stand out and people appreciate your uniqueness.
Our goal is not to fit in, but to stand out.
Stacey Keith talked about how her Facebook community grew without having a specific strategy in mind during our live panel discussion during Promo Day (You can watch the whole video chat here if you missed it). She mentioned how she just posts about things that interest her, and how she has never really thought about technical online marketing strategies like hashtags. She just keeps it real, and guess what? She has a large, and very interactive community.
We need to think less about statistics and sales that can make us feel inadequate, and concentrate more on what makes us happy. This is why I'll be making some changes over the coming months.
- I'll be spending more time writing my books. My works in progress somehow slipped down my priority list and ended up being neglected. - I'll be organising my content so you can find what you need faster. - I'll be doing more webinars and e-courses (both free and paid) as I love helping people. - I'll be redesigning my monthly newsletter. - I'll be making more premade book covers. I love doing these! I can't believe I waited so long to get started.
Do you ever feel like you've been pulled into an internet cult?
Promo Day on Saturday was awesome! A huge thank you to all of you that came and joined in the fun. My head is still spinning from all the info and tips that were shared.
So much went on during the day. I'm still working through all my notes. 24 hours of awesomeness!
All the webinars were great. The presenters really did an excellent job this year.
The live chats were a blast. One of my favourite things is when I get to connect in live events and have a good old chatter. Video hangouts are my absolute favourites as it's the closest to being face to face. If you'd like to organise a video chat with me get in touch and we can set one up.
The social media chats were also fun. Twitter is my favourite for those. Again, I'm happy to organise one if you'd like to interview me.
Throughout the day we touched on loads of topics related to book marketing and, author branding. One of the main points that came up time and time again was the importance of being a real person and connecting. None of that repeated "buy my book" stuff. If you have any suggestions for the type of content you'd like to see me share more of then please leave a comment below to let me know.
As a special treat I'm sharing with you today the replay of my own webinar from the event (sorry but the written extras were only for those who took part in the live event but hopefully you'll get a lot of the video anyway) and two of the fantastic live panel discussions that happened during the day.
My webinar: Blogging for Authors
Panel discussion: Connecting with Readers
Panel Discussion: Virtual Book Tours
If you took part in the event or if you have feedback about the above videos please leave a comment below to let me know what you thought.

Some of you may already be familiar with The Book Designer, but for those of you that aren't, it was founded in 2013 and now hosts one of the largest selections of quality, affordable pre-made book covers online.
Another reason why I'm so excited about this new partnership is that the site was founded by a guy named Charlie from Guildford in the South East of England. Why does this add to the excitement level I hear you wonder? Well, because I know Guildford well. Back when I lived in the UK, my friends and I would sometimes hit Guildford for shopping and nights out. It's therefore nice to find out that such an awesome site was created by "one of my own" ;)
I only have one design up on site there so far but will be adding more soon. I may also be adding print covers there too in the near future.
Today I'm reviewingThe Murder that never was by Andrea Kane. I got sent a free copy of
this book to review as part of a virtual book tour organised by Partners In
Crime. I'm giving this book a 4 star rating.
If you like mystery, crime, thrillers, etc...
you'll want to check this one out.
About the book:
"Given the opportunity, would you assume someone else's identity and leave your old life behind? A serendipitous crossing of paths between Lisa Barnes, a down-on-her-luck job seeker, and Julie Forman, a personal trainer to an Olympic hopeful, forever changes the course of both women's lives. One winds up dead and the other finds herself a fugitive, hiding behind one lie after another as a cold-blooded killer methodically hunts her. Desperately trying to stay alive, the terrified woman enlists the help of Forensic Instincts, a rogue investigative team that clandestinely operates in the gray area between legal and illegal. Safeguarding their client's deception, Forensic Instincts digs into dangerous territory as they try to find out who's after their client and why. Meanwhile, bodies are piling up in Chicago, New Jersey, and Vermont as a megalomaniacal genius will stop at nothing to eradicate anyone who threatens the success of his medical breakthrough. With an unhinged client and a monstrous criminal enterprise as its adversary, Forensic Instincts is forced into uncharted territory to protect their client and save one of their own from becoming the next corpse. Forensic Instincts is an unorthodox, criminal investigative team that carefully navigates the fine line between legal and illegal. The team consists of a behaviorist, a former Navy SEAL, a techo-wiz, an intuitive, a pickpocket, a retired FBI agent, and a human scent evidence dog."
This cover could work well for books in the romance genre, young adult, or for chick lit.

Today I'm reviewingTales
from the Crib by Jennifer Coburn. My rating
for this book is 2 1/2 (I wanted to liked it more and give a 3 star but have to
be honest and true to my rating system).
About the book:
"Talk about bad
timing!
When Lucy Klein gets her
positive pregnancy results, she’s overjoyed. She and her husband Jack have been
trying to get pregnant for years throughout their rocky marriage. But before
she can tell him the big news, Jack has something he needs to announce – he
wants a divorce!
Rather than split up, Lucy
and Jack decide to live together as friends. This way, they can share expenses
and parenting responsibilities. Co-parenting is a fine deal for Jack who is
back in the dating scene by Lucy’s third trimester of pregnancy, but is a
frustrating one for Lucy who has unfulfilled sexual fantasies about every man
from restaurant delivery boys to puppeteers.
Meanwhile, Lucy’s mother is
taking over her life. The grand dame of Planet Earth, Anjoli frequently visits
her daughter to share her own brand of maternal wisdom.
As Anjoli leaves her Drama
Queen bookstore to “help” Lucy with baby Adam, the new grandmother has an
affair with baby’s pediatrician, hosts two weddings (including cousin Kimmy’s
wedding to herself), and constantly frets about which kind of pie to serve
guests. With a cast of family and friends from Lucy’s Jewish aunts to Junior
League neighbor, Candace, Tales From the Crib is the story of how one baby can
bring people together – so they can drive each other nuts! "
