Household appliances are integral to modern living, enhancing convenience and efficiency in daily tasks.

According to Statista, the household appliances market is projected to reach 5.0 billion pieces by 2029, with volume growth of 1.7% anticipated in 2025. The average volume per household is estimated at 2.27 pieces in 2024. However, with the widespread adoption of these appliances comes the need for careful handling to prevent accidents and damage.

This guide will explore key high-risk home appliances and provide essential tips for safe usage and maintenance.

1. Instant Pots and Pressure Cookers

Instant Pots and other modern pressure cookers have become kitchen staples, offering quick and efficient meal preparation. However, these devices require careful handling due to the high pressure they use to cook food. Strictly following the manufacturer's instructions is paramount for safe Instant Pot operation. This encompasses correct assembly, precise ingredient measurements, and adherence to recommended cooking times.

Proper venting is a critical safety feature of Instant Pot usage.  Users must allow the pressure to fully release before attempting to open the lid. Safe food handling practices, such as not overfilling the pot and avoiding foods that can foam or expand, can prevent clogs and pressure buildup.

Regular cleaning and maintenance are also essential. The sealing ring, vent, and lid should be inspected and cleaned after each use to maintain proper functioning.

However, despite these precautions, there have been reports of the Instant Pot explosion that has resulted in severe injuries. Victims have reported eye injuries to third-degree burns on their hands, wrists, and chests. Some incidents have even involved burns from electrical currents due to defective cookers.

TorHoerman Law notes that these incidents underscore concerns about product safety. They also highlight the responsibility of manufacturers to ensure their products are safe for consumer use. If you've been injured by an Instant Pot explosion, you might be able to pursue legal action.

Such legal actions aim to hold companies accountable for negligence in product safety and seek compensation for victims affected by these accidents.

Is it unhealthy to cook in an Instant Pot?

Cooking with an Instant Pot is generally not unhealthy if used properly. It can be a healthy option, as it often requires less oil and can retain more nutrients compared to other cooking methods. Follow safety instructions and use appropriate, quality ingredients for best results.

2. Air Conditioners and Heaters

Consistent maintenance is essential for preserving the functionality and safety of your appliances. This involves inspecting for leaks, cleaning or replacing filters, and confirming that all parts are operating properly. Additionally, having a professional service the appliances regularly can help detect potential issues early, preventing them from escalating.

Preventing overheating is crucial, particularly with space heaters. According to Homes & Gardens, it is generally not recommended to leave a space heater on while you sleep due to fire hazards. Additionally, there is the potential for overheating and carbon monoxide poisoning, especially in the case of fuel-burning heaters.

Modern space heaters often have safety features like automatic shut-off if they get too hot or tip over. Moreover, using a heater with a thermostat allows you to maintain a specified temperature, reducing the risk of overheating. Opting for heaters with safety certificates from reputable organizations further guarantees that the appliance meets stringent safety standards.

Is it safe to use an AC heater?

Yes, using an AC heater is generally safe if installed and maintained properly. Make sure to conduct regular inspections, follow manufacturer guidelines, and use safety features like thermostats and automatic shut-offs. Avoid overloading electrical circuits and keep the unit clean to prevent potential hazards.

3. Microwaves

Proper food preparation in a microwave involves using microwave-safe containers, avoiding non-microwave-safe plastic, and stirring regularly for even heating. Some materials, especially certain plastics and ceramics, can become dangerously hot or even release harmful chemicals when heated.

Cleaning and maintenance are also crucial for microwave safety. Regularly wipe down the interior with a mild detergent to prevent food residue buildup, which can cause odors and even fires. Inspect the microwave’s door seals and hinges for any damage, which could lead to inefficient operation or leakage of microwave energy.

Overheating is a significant risk associated with microwaves. According to 1News, the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) in New Zealand spends nearly $500,000 annually supporting individuals with injuries from microwaves. These injuries often result from burns caused by heating certain containers that become excessively hot.

For instance, a case highlighted involved a zebra-striped mug whose handle became dangerously hot, leading to burns. This incident underscores the importance of using containers that are genuinely microwave-safe and adhering to safety guidelines.

4. Stoves and Ovens

These appliances are central to kitchen operations but require careful use to prevent accidents and maintain safety. Safe cooking practices are essential. Always stay in the kitchen while cooking to avoid unattended cooking, which can lead to fires.

Proper ventilation is crucial for preventing the buildup of smoke and heat. Make sure that your kitchen is well-ventilated, either through an exhaust fan or open windows, to maintain air quality and reduce fire risk.

Cleaning and maintenance are also important for safe stove and oven operation. Regularly clean spills and crumbs to prevent grease buildup, which can ignite. Inspect burners and oven elements for damage and replace them if needed.

Recent safety issues underscore the importance of these practices. According to Fortune, Samsung recalled over 1.12 million electric ranges due to safety concerns. Reports of 250 fires and numerous injuries prompted the recall, with issues arising from front-mounted knobs that could accidentally activate.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) noted that these knobs contributed to at least 18 fires causing significant property damage and seven pet deaths. The recall affects models with these faulty knobs, and both Samsung and the CPSC have provided lists of affected products online.

Is cooking on an electric stove healthy?

Cooking on an electric stove is generally safe and healthy. It doesn’t emit combustion byproducts like gas stoves can. For healthy cooking, use non-toxic cookware and avoid overheating. Regular maintenance of the stove can also help prevent potential issues and ensure safe cooking conditions.

5. Dishwashers

Electrical malfunctions can occur if the dishwasher's wiring or components are damaged, leading to short circuits or fires. Water leaks are another concern, potentially causing water damage to floors and cabinets.

To prevent these issues, proper maintenance and usage are crucial. Make sure that dishes are loaded correctly to avoid blockages in the spray arms, which can lead to potential damage. Use only the recommended detergent to avoid buildup or chemical reactions that could harm the appliance.

Regularly inspect the dishwasher for leaks, particularly around the door seals and hoses. Also, check for any electrical issues, such as frayed cords or malfunctioning components, and address them promptly.

Home appliances, while offering convenience and efficiency, can pose potential risks if not handled with care. By understanding the specific hazards associated with different appliances and implementing preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of accidents and damage.

Regular maintenance, proper usage, and adherence to safety guidelines are essential for the longevity and safe operation of your home appliances. Staying informed about product recalls and safety advisories is crucial in protecting yourself and your family.

Remember, a safe and well-maintained home environment starts with responsible appliance usage.
