Every year on 9th August the world celebrates the love of books with International Book Lovers Day

There are so many benefits to reading and today seems like the perfect day to take a closer look at why reading books is good for you.

8 Reasons Why Books Are Important

1. Reading broadens knowledge.

I'm not just talking about non fiction books for this. Whilst obviously non fiction books are a great way to expand your knowledge of a topic there's a lot that can be learnt from fiction books too.

2. Books cure boredom.

Books allow us to explore multiple realities. They take us on adventures. They show us places, feelings and alternative points of view. With the right book you will never be bored.

3. Reading improves vocabulary and language skills.

When we read, even as adults, we learn new language and vocabulary. I read books in British English, American and Italian and have learnt new words and phrases in all three languages from doing so. I've picked up words in several other languages too so it's not just limited to your mother tongue languages.

4. Books are entertaining.

Have you ever had that feeling where you get lost in book and just can't put it down? It's the best feeling right?!

5. Reading improves your focus, memory, empathy, and communication skills.

Books allow us to explore the emotions of the characters we read about and allows us to better understand the feelings and views of other's whilst at the same time making us more self-aware.

'Great books help you understand, and they help you feel understood.'- John Green

Reading is a workout for the brain. It provides mental stimulation that helps develop a sharper memory. It also makes you think and ask questions therefore helping to improve analytical thinking skills.

6. Reading has the potential to boost your levels of creativity.

Books are full of creativity and imagination so it makes sense that they help  enhance and stimulate your imagination and creative skills.

7. Reading reduces stress.

Reading is a great way to relax and lower stress levels.

Any activity that possesses meditative qualities in which the brain is fully focused on a single task is proven to reduce stress and enhance relaxation. - Reading Partners
8. Reading before bed helps you fall asleep faster and improves your sleep quality.

I don't know about you but I do most of my reading in the evening before bed. Partly because I'm usually too busy during the day but also because it helps me relax and makes me sleepy. It's a part of my bedtime routine and a great way to unwind after a long day.

Can you think of any other reasons why reading is important? What do you like most about books?
