Book Review: Nina is NOT OK by Shappi Khorsandi

Nina is NOT OK by Shappi Khorsandi

Today I'm sharing my review for Nina is NOT OK by Shappi Khorsandi. This book was awesome. You need to read it!

About the book:

Nina does not have a drinking problem. She likes a drink, sure. But what 17-year-old doesn’t?
Nina’s mum isn’t so sure. But she’s busy with her new husband and five year old Katie. And Nina’s almost an adult after all.
And if Nina sometimes wakes up with little memory of what happened the night before , then her friends are all too happy to fill in the blanks. Nina’s drunken exploits are the stuff of college legend.
But then one dark Sunday morning, even her friends can’t help piece together Saturday night. All Nina feels is a deep sense of shame, that something very bad has happened to her…
A dark and sometimes shocking - coming of age novel from one of the UK’s leading comedians. NINA IS NOT O.K. will appeal to fans of Caitlin Moran and Louise O'Neill.

Book Review: Three Blonde Mice by Jane Heller

Book Review: Three Blonde Mice by Jane Heller

Today I'm sharing my review for Three Blonde Mice by Jane Heller.

About the book:

In bestselling author Jane Heller’s wild and hilarious mystery, three friends go on a cooking excursion with a famous chef, only to discover one of their classmates is very keen on practicing knife technique.
Elaine Zimmerman and her best friends Jackie Gault and Pat Kovecky venture to a farm in Litchfield, Connecticut. It’s been over a year since their last trip together, a Caribbean cruise aboard the Princess Charming, and after dealing with a murderous ex and his hit man, they’re yearning for a no-drama vacation this time. During their Cultivate Our Bounty Week, they and eight other guests will learn how to cook farm-to-table meals with Whitley’s artisan-in-residence, a renowned TV/restaurant chef named Jason Hill. Elaine, the jaded, neurotic narrator, is less than thrilled—especially because the program wasn’t supposed to include a surprise appearance by her former boyfriend Simon, who’s still the love of her life but can’t commit to her. What’s more, after milking a cow and making cheese, she stumbles on evidence that one of her fellow agritourists is out to murder Chef Hill at the resort’s Bounty Fest finale.
Is the killer among the freakishly fit Manhattan couple who takes their devotion to organic, hormone-free, non-GMO food to the point of obsession? The grandmother from Wisconsin who’s a groupie of the celebrity chef and follows him to every event? The mother and son from Palm Beach who bicker over whether he should give up his law practice to open his own restaurant? Three Blonde Mice serves up a crackling romance between Elaine and Simon, a twisty whodunit involving a screwball cast of suspects and a satire of current food fads and the farm-to-table chefs who perpetuate them.

My Books This Week (It's been a good one ;))

It's been a good week book wise.

Watch the video for a quick overview or scroll on down for the details ;)

This past week has been awesome! Here's a look at why...

The Box

My children's picture story book The Box was available as a free download on Kindle on 8th and 9th March and hit multiple best seller lists on Amazon for different countries during the promotion.

This is a screenshot taken on 8th March:

Best seller on Amazon. The Box by Jo Linsdell #KidLit #PictureBook

The Box then reached number 3 in basic concept books on 9th March (insert happy dance here)

Best seller on Amazon. The Box by Jo Linsdell #KidLit #PictureBook

It then received a couple of new 5 star reviews, One on Amazon US:

Best seller on Amazon. The Box by Jo Linsdell #KidLit #PictureBook

And one on Amazon Italy:

Needless to say I was pleased with the results of this promotion.

Italian for Tourists

Then on 10th March I logged in to check for sales and discovered that Italian for Tourists was back in the best seller lists again. Over the moon about that as I wasn't running again promotions for that one and it was in the paid category.

The good news doesn't stop there either! Gunpowder (KOSMOS Episode Two) is free from 10th -12th March and guess what... it hit the best seller lists too!

On the US site it reached number 10 for historical fiction on 10th March

And number 1 on Amazon Italy (I'm still in shock!). It's still holding the number 1 spot today too :)

You can still grab your free copy of Gunpowder. Here's all the links:

As you can see it's been an awesome week for me and my books. I do have a small favour to ask you though that would make it even better.... please take a minute to leave a review for any of my books you've read.

Reviews are so important. They help other readers decide if the book is for them and therefore can be the deal closer on new sales. They also activate the Amazon algorithms which means that Amazon starts pushing the book in their promotions. This is huge for authors as can mean the book gets seen by a much larger audience. And last, but by no means least, it gives me the chance to see what you like about my books (and what can be improved) so I can make better books in the future. It's also probably the most effective form of motivation to write more, when a reader tells you they enjoyed your book.

Not sure what to write in a review?

A review doesn't have to be long. Just a couple of sentences will do (unless of course you want to write more ;)).

What did you like about the book?
Who would you recommend the book for?

Don't have a kindle but want to read kindle books?

Book Review: The Fire Child by S K Tremayne

Book Review: The Fire Child by S K Tremayne

Today I'm sharing with you my review of The Fire Child by S K Tremayne.

My rating: 5 stars. One of the best books I read last year (I read and filmed my video review in December ;))

About the book:

When Rachel marries dark, handsome David, everything seems to fall into place. Swept from single life in London to the beautiful Carnhallow House in Cornwall, she gains wealth, love, and an affectionate stepson, Jamie.
But then Jamie’s behaviour changes, and Rachel’s perfect life begins to unravel. He makes disturbing predictions, claiming to be haunted by the spectre of his late mother – David’s previous wife. Is this Jamie’s way of punishing Rachel, or is he far more traumatized than she thought?

As Rachel starts digging into the past, she begins to grow suspicious of her husband. Why is he so reluctant to discuss Jamie’s outbursts? And what exactly happened to cause his ex-wife’s untimely death, less than two years ago? As summer slips away and December looms, Rachel begins to fear there might be truth in Jamie’s words:
‘You will be dead by Christmas.’

Some of the reviews:

"The Box took me right back to my childhood and my children's childhood. Now, I can read it to my grandchildren and tell them how I played with a box and how their Mom or Dad did. Jo Linsdell has written a fun book with illustrations that will touch your heart and take you back in time. It has just the right number of words and sentences to connect to your toddler's imagination and stay within their attentive span. When I get a new book for the grandchildren I often bring something to go with it like seeds and a shovel for a book about a garden. How neat is this. I will only need to find a discarded box! Imagination is a wonderful thing to promote. This really does deserve 5 stars."

"I loved this book! The Box by Jo Linsdell has all the makings of a favorite children's book: simple, imaginative and fun. I wish I had this book when my boy was a toddler, but there are others in my life who are going to enjoy seeing all the creative things they can do with a box. And then, I'm sure, they will want to immediately read the book again! Congratulations to Jo Linsdell on a very lovely book."

"Jo Linsdell is a genius. The Box, is a delightful little book and fun to read to little ones. The story is simply done, with just the right amount of text and the illustrations add to it perfectly. My youngest child clients absolutely love it. It's so much fun to read about all the imaginative activities a child could do with a box. (And to think an adult wrote this!) After the story ends I encourage kids to think up more ways to use a box...."Because a box is just a box, except when it's not." This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it."

"The most expensive toy will never match up with a simple large box. Ms. Linsdell does an awesome job with this fun and simple children's picture book that brought back nostalgic memories for me. A box holds so many possibilities and the imagination is endless! :)
The artwork is beautiful, clear and engaging for both a child and the adult reading the story. I really enjoy the clean simplicity. A great book for that special boy who will always remember the fun he had with a simple box! This is a great indoor/rainy day or outdoor fun story! Works all around! :)"

"What I’ve always loved about Linsdell’s children’s books is their simplicity and creativity. As a mom, she knows what young readers are looking for. She proves this once again with The Box. How often do parents joke that we buy our kids a bunch of toys for their birthday and they end up playing with the boxes? Linsdell truly gets into the heart of a child with this one. The adorable illustrations keep the reader focused on the boy and his magic box that he can transform into anything."

"The text, illustrations, and the theme of the book is simplicity at its best. It is not complicated, fancy, or hard to understand. The book shares the creative possibilities of taking a simple cardboard box and using imagination to let it become an endless array of possibilities to entertain and amuse young children. The thought struck me as I read it how things in life need to be simplified to the basics. A great book for adults to share with young children"

Joint Promotion Opportunity for Authors

Joint Promotion Opportunity for Authors: Reaching More Readers by Working Together

Those of you that know me even a little will know that I love the marketing side of my job just as much as the creative side. I often blend the two and I like getting creative with my marketing. As I have so many new releases scheduled for this year I've been thinking of new ways to help spread the word about my books.... which brings me to today's idea: Joint promotion.

I have followers here on my blog, on my various social media channels, and my newsletter (to those of you reading this and saying "hey that's me", you are awesome" ;)). Anyway, I got to thinking. I have followers. Other authors have followers too. What if we pulled together to promote our books? We could reach a much bigger audience that way and let even more people know about our books.

The plan

So, what I was thinking was that we could all make one of our books free or discounted on the same day, and then each cross promote all our books as one big, super offer for our readers.

“All for one and one for all.” ― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers #Quote

How to join in

Set up your free/discount deal for Friday 14th April. Then drop me an email Subject: "JOINT PROMO" with the following info:

Book Title:
Author name:
Amazon book purchasing link:
Normal price:
Offer price:
Jpeg of the book cover

DEADLINE: To be included in the joint promotion I will need to receive your information before Friday 7th April at the latest.

This particular promotion is for children's books and so open to authors of books for young children to teens. I will organise more including other genres later on in the year though.

I will email you back with the details of all books involved in the promotion along with some promotional materials to make sharing about the joint promotion as simple as possible.

The more the merrier!

My Favourite Tools: Why I Love Canva

My Favourite Tools: Why I Love Canva @Canva

Today I wanted to share with you one of my favourite tools: Canva. I seriously LOVE this site and use it nearly everyday. I'm not an affiliate or in any way connected with the site. I'm just a fan ;)

The templates on site make it super easy, and quick, to create images for use both online and off. As all designs created are saved to the site, it also makes it easy it keep branding on track.

They have templates for pretty much everything, but also give you the option of using custom dimensions.

This screenshot shows just some of the templates available:

My Favourite Tools: Why I Love Canva

Not only is it my go to creation tool for images for blog posts, and social media, but they also offer awesome customer service.

Here's a look at how things went when I was greeted by an error message on site on Tuesday this week.

My first reaction was to panic. I had planned on creating graphics for upcoming blog posts both here at and for my other sites and As I mentioned above, Canva is a site I use on a daily basis.

Once I'd refreshed the page about a million times (OK I may be exaggerating just a tad but it was a lot), I decided to reach out on Twitter.

I'm not known for being patient and so decided to try contacting customer service on the website. It was down too. At this point I decided to talk to Canva more directly...

That's when I received a tweet from them telling me they were fixing the problem.

I then received another tweet from them that proved that not only are they quick to reply and resolve problems, but also put a personal touch when they do to make their clients feel special.

So if you're looking for a site to use to create visual content to use for your blog, or social media posts, I highly recommend using Canva.

Book Review: The Girl Before by JP Delaney

Book Review: The Girl Before by JP Delaney

My thoughts about The Girl Before by JP Delaney

Disclosure: I got sent a free copy of this book by the publisher via Net Galley.

Today I'm sharing my review for The Girl Before by JP Delaney. This is one of the best books I've read so far this year and can't recommend it enough. I'm also now really excited to see how they do the film which is scheduled for release later this year.

Enter the world of One Folgate Street and discover perfection . . . but can you pay the price?

For all fans of The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl comes this spellbinding Hitchcockian thriller which takes psychological suspense to the next level.

Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there - and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before. As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma's past and Jane's present become inexorably entwined in this tense, page-turning portrayal of psychological obsession.
