5-Minute Workouts for Busy Beginners

Let’s be honest — finding time to work out can feel like trying to squeeze an extra hour into the day. Between work, family, and the never-ending to-do list, fitness often ends up at the bottom. I’ve been there. But here’s the thing: you don’t need an hour at the gym to get moving. In fact, just five minutes can make a real difference — and it’s far easier to stick to!

Here are a few of my favourite quick workouts you can do at home, no fancy equipment or Lycra required.

1. The Morning Wake-Up

Perfect for: shaking off that sleepy feeling.

  • 1 minute of marching or jogging on the spot

  • 1 minute of squats (don’t worry about going too low — just move!)

  • 1 minute of arm circles and shoulder rolls

  • 1 minute of jumping jacks or step jacks (lower impact)

  • 1 minute of deep breathing and gentle stretches

Five minutes later, your blood’s pumping and you’ll actually feel awake — without the extra coffee.

2. The Midday Energy Boost

Perfect for: sneaking in some movement between meetings or before lunch.

  • 1 minute of high knees

  • 1 minute of push-ups (use the wall or kitchen counter if needed)

  • 1 minute of lunges

  • 1 minute of plank (or hold for as long as you can!)

  • 1 minute of torso twists or standing side bends

It’s amazing how much this wakes you up — far better than scrolling your phone for a “break.”

3. The Evening De-Stress

Perfect for: unwinding after a long day.

  • 1 minute of slow bodyweight squats

  • 1 minute of side lunges

  • 1 minute of gentle arm and neck stretches

  • 1 minute of cat-cow stretches on all fours

  • 1 minute of deep breathing — in through your nose, out through your mouth

This one feels more like self-care than exercise, and it’s a lovely way to close out the day.

Why It Works

Starting small takes away the pressure. Five minutes feels doable, even on your busiest days — and once you start, you might surprise yourself and keep going. Consistency beats intensity every time.

The best part? You can do these in your pyjamas, between Zoom calls, or while dinner’s in the oven. Movement doesn’t have to be perfect; it just has to happen.

So next time you think, “I don’t have time to work out,” give yourself five minutes. Your future self will thank you.
