One thing that most bloggers will agree on is the struggle to build engagement on our blog posts. Even those of us with high traffic sites strive to get more blog comments on our posts. 

The reasons bloggers love comments so much are numerous. 

Firstly, because it creates a connection with our readers (sometimes it can feel a bit like we're just talking into the void). This is actually one of the top reasons why a lot of bloggers give up. 

When blog readers comment to say they enjoyed a post, to share opinions about a post or ask questions related to the post etc it gives the blogger a good indication about whether or not the content they are putting out is right for their readers. It can also spark ideas for future blog posts.

Secondly, the comments sections is an extension of the blog post and so quality comments containing keywords can have a positive impact on SEO.

When you get a link placement on another domain to your own, this is called a backlink. 

Commenting on other peoples blog posts is a great way to get backlinks for your own blog. Whilst links in comment sections are usually No-Follow (meaning they won't have as much impact as a direct Do-Follow link) they can help improve your off-page SEO. 

A healthy backlink profile will have a mix of Do-Follow and No-Follow links. If the links are from blogs with high DA Scores the positive effect will be greater.

How Blog Comments Help Increase Traffic and New Visitors

Posting comments on other peoples blog posts is a great way of building relationships with other bloggers and readers. Showing support for other bloggers is always appreciated and with the right comment you could grab the interest of their readers and turn them into followers of your own blog too.

In fact, blog commenting is great for building credibility and driving traffic to your own blog. Readers that like your comment might click through to your blog to find out more about you and your content. 

Best Practices for Blog Commenting

Don't post spammy comments. Comments should be on topic (read the post first!) and add something to the conversation. 

Avoid generic short comments. Whilst "great post" is nice it doesn't add anything to the conversation and can therefore be seen as spam comments. Aim for at least two sentences.

Leaving a thoughtful, insightful comment will make you stand out both to the owner of the blog and the other blog readers. A blog comment that offers value can be a great way of driving traffic to your own blog. 

Remember the type of comments you leave speaks volumes about you, and the same goes for visitors leaving comments on your blog. Aim for high-quality comments.

My own offpage SEO went down recently along with my DA so I'll definitely keep this in mind as I haven't been visiting blogs and commenting on them as much as I should do (mainly commenting through twitter these days!).     1. You're very welcome Cat. Off-page SEO is considered by search engines to be a strong indicator of a site's authority and can significantly impact rankings. When it comes to off page SEO most bloggers do the social media marketing part to a certain extent but often forget about other elements like link building and guest blogging. Like you, I definitely need to spend more time on my own off page SEO.
