Ways to Stay Safe During a Heatwave

Just when we had dropped down to a more comfortable 30-35°C... another heatwave!

This coming week the average is 37-38°C plus humidity. So, the air conditioner is back on and we're back to sweating buckets even without doing anything.

This year is breaking records all over the world with super high temperatures.

In my post last month, How To Survive A Heatwave: Tips for Coping in Hot Weather, I shared some tips to help keep you cool in a heatwave. A list of what to do to survive the hot summer months.

Today I'm going to share a list of things you shouldn't do during a heatwave.

Things You Shouldn't Do in a Heatwave

What should you avoid in heat?

1) Avoid going out in the warmest parts of the day.
Here in Italy the state alert tells us not to go out unless absolutely necessary between 10am and 6pm. As you can imagine that's not very practical. Take a tip from the Italians and take a siesta after lunch. Take a nap and avoiding going out between 12 noon and 3pm.

2) Avoid Alcohol and caffeine.
Alcohol, tea, coffee, and carbonated drinks dehydrate your body.

3) Do not leave children or pets (or any other living being) in parked vehicles.
This should be obvious as the metal of the vehicle basically turns it into an oven, making it even hotter than the outside temperature.

4) Avoid strenuous activity.
During a heatwave is not the time to be over doing it. With high temperatures it isn't exactly "jogging weather".

5) Don't get dehydrated.
Most people don't drink enough water on a good day but it's even more important to keep your liquid intake up during the hot weather.

6) Don't think the heat is a risk just for the very old or the very young.
Whilst babies and small children are a high risk group, as are the elderly, the heat isn't just a concern for those age groups.

Heatwaves kill... and they don't discriminate against their victims. Keep an eye on the people around you and don't underestimate the early signs of heat-stroke.

Foods To Avoid During A Heatwave

When the temperatures rise it's important to eat the right food as some types can trigger dehydration, cause irritation, or take longer to digest.

What shouldn't you eat during a heatwave?

1) Spicy food.

2) Fatty food.

3) Alcohol and caffeine.

4) Added sugars.

5) Processed food.
