I recently talked about my book obsession with the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. This week I'm sharing my love for the Me Before You series by Jojo Moyes.

Warning some small spoilers ahead for those of you that haven't read the series yet.

Reasons Why I love the Me Before You series:

1) All the feels

This series ripped out my heart and stomped all over it, but at the same time made me laugh, made me think about life, and had me screaming at the pages. It was a roller-coaster of emotion all the way through.

2) Great characters

This series had a colourful cast of characters, each bringing their own something to the story.

Each one of them seemed real. They were complete characters, quirks and all.

3) Thought provoking

This is definitely a series that makes you think. It'll have you questioning your beliefs, and wondering what you would do if you were ever in the same situations.

This series deals with some heavy topics, but it does so beautifully. It had me wanting to hate Will but at the same time feeling sorry for him and understanding why he did what he did.

Louisa has to make some big decisions as she goes through her journey of self discovery. It really made me think more about my own life and what I want to do.

This is a series that stays with you long after you've finished reading it.

Favourite characters:

Louisa Clark - The protagonist of the series that I couldn't help but fall in love with. Lou is a simple girl that grows so much, and on so many levels, throughout the series. I also loved her colourful, sense of style.

Ambulance Sam - Can anyone say fictional crush? Sam is awesome. Good looking, kind, patient, caring, understanding... this man is the whole package. He did lose points briefly in Still Me but regained his yummy status back by the end.

Camilla Traynor- I loved seeing the different sides of her character as the series progressed. At first she came across as cold and uncaring but her real character comes out slowly as the story moves forward.

Some of My Favourite Quotes:

“You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.” - Me Before You

“Some mistakes... Just have greater consequences than others. But you don't have to let the result of one mistake be the thing that defines you. You, Clark, have the choice not to let that happen.”
- Me Before You

“I will never, ever regret the things I've done. Because most days, all you have are places in your memory that you can go to.”
- Me Before You

“You are scored on my heart,Clark. You were from the first day you walked in,with your ridiculous clothes and your complete inability to ever hide a single thing you felt.”
- Me Before You

“The thing about being catapulted into a whole new life--or at least, shoved up so hard against someone else's life that you might as well have your face pressed against their window--is that it forces you to rethink your idea of who you are. Or how you might seem to other people.” - Me Before You

“You learn to live with it, with them. Because they do stay with you, even if they’re not living, breathing people any more. It’s not the same crushing grief you felt at first, the kind that swamps you, and makes you want to cry in the wrong places, and get irrationally angry with all the idiots who are still alive when the person you love is dead. It’s just something you learn to accommodate. Like adapting around a hole. I don’t know. It’s like you become … a doughnut instead of a bun” - After You

“Books are what teach you about life. Books teach you empathy. But you can’t buy books if you barely got enough to make rent. So that library is a vital resource! You shut a library, Louisa, you don’t just shut down a building, you shut down hope.” - Still Me

“There is a great consolation in simply doing something you love.” - Still Me

“Know first who you are and then adore yourself accordingly.” - Still Me

    1. I got the second book in the series in a charity shop in the UK when I went over for a visit. I knew I wanted to read them in order and so I ordered the first book from Book Depository. I got the third book from Book Depository as soon as it came out too. I hadn't thought to look Jojo Moyes up on NetGalley. Will do now though. I'm definitely a fan.

  6. I read the first two books and saw the movie. The first one crushed me. I didn’t know anything about the book so I didn’t know it would end the way it did.
I understand the controversy with this story. The defense is that this is only one person’s story. It’s tough. I’m more torn now because I recently dated a paraplegic. I think somehow once the book or movie came up in conversation (texting) and I think he thought negatively about it. We didn’t get into a deep conversation about it though. I’m not sure the right answer.

I did love Louisa too though! She’s the sweetest, most adorable character. Emilia Clarke was good casting because I think the same about her. Love her!

    1. I think a lot of the controversy is from people who are generalizing it. Like you said, this is one person's story. It's not meant to reflect a whole group of people. In fact, one of the things that makes this story so emotional is the fact that it is such a personal tale. It digs deep into the life of Will and those around him.

Even knowing the ending of the first book it still floored me.

Louisa is a great character. I agree, Emilia Clarke did a good job of interpreting her in film.

    1. Hope you have fun with the trivia quiz 😊

I loved the whole Me Before You series. The second and third aren't as raw as the first book but each have elements that make them great emotional reads.
