October 2024 Book Blogger Round Up

October 2024 Book Blogger Posts Round Up

A collection of blog posts by book bloggers

Welcome back for another Book Bloggers Round Up! A content collection featuring blog posts by book bloggers.

Disclosure: The FTC Disclosure Provision is a law that requires influencers to disclose when they are being paid to promote a product or service. So please know that if I'm not making money through affiliate links/sponsored content on the post you're currently reading, it's an oversight on my part and will be corrected soon. Read the full disclosure about all the legal stuff here.

I introduced this feature here on the blog in May 2021 to showcase blog posts by other book bloggers and as it continues to be a popular series I've decided to continue again this year too.

Each month I'll include a wide variety of content so there's something for everyone. You'll find book reviews, interviews, discussion pieces and more...

So if you're looking for new bookish content to read and/or want to discover some new book bloggers to follow, look no further!

Why I do this feature:

Scanning through various social media feeds to find suitable content can take up valuable time and so I figured I'd make it easier and put together a collection here on the blog.

It's also a way for me to highlight some of the other great book bloggers out there and help promote books and reading at the same time.

How it works:

Each month I do a post via my Twitter, where I offer the opportunity for book bloggers to submit posts published during that month for inclusion in this round up. I do this every month.

Want to be included in future round ups? Follow my Twitter profile and keep an eye out for the submission tweet.

October 2024 Book Blogger Round Up

@storyreviewblog did the post Hamilton Book Month Author Showcase where she did a recap of some of the authors who were at the New Zealand Author Showcase event.

@Mehsi_Hime put together a post with ten zombie books to read. Perfect for Spooktober/ October Horror Mystery Month.

@DanSamEnd reviewed What We Did In The Storm by Tina Baker. "A cracking read delving deep into human nature and morality laced with scandal, mystery, and suspense where nothing is as it seems!" Read the full review here.

There's still time to join in The Clock Reading Challenge 2024!

@leftontheshelf1 did a review of Witchcraft: A Graphic History: Stories of Wise Women, Healers and Magic by Lindsay Squire. "This book has much to commend it. It tells the story of Biddy Early, a well known witch in the west of Ireland who was born in County Clare in 1798. The book does a great job of chronicling her life through words and illustrations and I could hardly put it down." Read the full review here.

@alitescape shared her thoughts about The City of Stardust by Georgia Summers. "...perfect for those who treasure that bedtime story, but this time for adults. It pits cruel divinity against earthly determination and forgiveness. Most of all, it’s about the search for family history and fighting for what you have." Read the full review here.

@thepagewalker1 reviewed The Crescent Moon Tearoom by Stacey Sivinsky. "The Quigley sisters' tale is a gentle reminder that in the tapestry of life, every thread is essential, and every pattern is part of a larger, beautiful design." Read the full post here.

Find out more about book blogger statistics in the Book Blogging in 2024 Survey Results.

@ReadingLadiesBC shared a list of ten books that she recommends for high school (and some middle-grade) students. Read the full post here.

@CHennighan reviewed What A Way To Go by Bella Mackie. "...is a delectable blend of wit, dark humour, and biting social commentary. Bella Mackie has once again proven her prowess in crafting stories that are as thought-provoking as they are laugh-out-loud funny." Read the full post here.

@_forbookssake did a review of Trespass Against Us by Leon Kemp. "This book will send shivers down your spine, and keep you up at night. However, it will also bring you to tears, and warm your heart." Read the full post here.

Children's Halloween Books

Here's a few Halloween themed children's book from my bookshelf:

The Traveling Circus by Mark Watson

WINNERS: Best Illustrated Children's Ebook - MOONBEAM Awards 2015
WINNERS: Best Children's Animal Book - READER'S FAVORITE Awards 2015
WINNERS: Best Illustrated Children's book - IPPY Awards 2015

Terrifying, funny, thrilling! This new, beautifully illustrated children's Halloween book is available in paperback and kindle versions.
The Kindle version includes links to exclusive interactive content.
Perfect for early and elementary readers.
This book may be adorable for young kids but is also enjoyable for the whole family.
Also fun or to be read aloud, this fun but scary children's picture book has become one of the most popular ebooks ever.

The little boy’s biggest and best present,
was an awesome, fold-out circus tent.
He put it up and played in it all day,
flatly refusing to tidy it away.

In the middle of the night,
when all were sleeping sweetly,
music came into his dreams,
although he slept so deeply.
He tossed and turned and mumbled,
then in his sleep he spoke,
“The Circus is in town!”
And with that he awoke…

He rubbed his eyes and shook his head,
fairylights were on his bed!
On the top, down the side and
along the floor they went,
like softly glowing fallen stars,
leading to the tent…

Whiskers' Halloween by Shana Gorian

Whiskers is out on Halloween night after an unusual sound catches his attention, but he’s not prepared for the frightening characters he finds walking the streets. But are they not what they seem?

Bubble Head, Boo! : Happy Clean Halloween! by Misty Black

A funny Frankenstein? A not-so-spooky spider? A moody mummy? HALLOWEEN has never been so HYSTERICAL!

Fred imagines amazing adventures during his nightly bubble baths. "SUNDAY, I'm a SPOOKY SPIDER crawling up your arm. I may seem rather creepy, but I don't mean any harm." What will he be on MONDAY?

Using alliteration and written in rhyme, this Halloween book teaches HYGIENE and the DAYS OF THE WEEK in an imaginative story your kids will want to read again and again. FOR AGES 2-7.

Includes GET-READY-FOR-BED/HYGIENE CHARTS kids can mark off in the back of the book to reduce bedtime stress.

As always, I like to bring you suggestions from my fellow book bloggers so I asked what Halloween reads they recommended and this is what they said...

Halloween Books for Younger Kids

@amloughrey recommends The Little Ghost who didn’t like to be scary by Isla Wynter. "An excellent book for showing how important it is to talk about your worries and ask for help if you need it. I like the way the author, Isla Wynter, demonstrates free will when Layla thinks about the advice she receives from the owl before deciding what she wants to do." Read the full review here.

@cjfriess recommends The Green-Fingered Witch by Helen Docherty & Steven Lenton. "The easy to read rhyming text is complemented by Steven Lenton’s wonderfully atmospheric illustrations. Spooky blues and autumn browns perfectly reflect the Halloween season and they include so many humorous details." Read the full review here.

Halloween Books for Older Kids

@SifaPoulton recommends Things That Go Bump by Kathryn Foxfield. "This book showcases the fun side of horror, where humour and scares coincide. You get to be unsettled by strange noises, and then laugh at the next escapade. It’s a nice blend." Read the full review here.

@thepagewalker1 recommends Warren the 13th and The All-Seeing Eye by Tania del Rio. "It’s a story that kids will truly enjoy. It’s got all the fun, craziness, adventure, and mystery they will appreciate. Plus, the illustrations are all wonderful; meticulously done in red, black, and white, it will surely catch the kids’ attention." Read the full review here.

@Behindthepages1 recommends City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab. "City of Ghosts is the perfect starting point for young readers and even adults who are interested in ghost stories. There is just enough of a spooky feeling and close encounters to draw readers in but not overwhelm them." Read the full review here.

@PagesUnbound recommends Eleanor, Alice, and the Roosevelt Ghosts by Dianne K. Salerni. "Eleanor, Alice, and the Roosevelt Ghosts is one of those rare middle grade books that feels almost magical. The premise, the plot line, and the characters all combine to create an engrossing story that is hard to put down." Read the full review here.

@fly276 recommends Scareground by Angela Kecojevic. "Friendships might be questioned & tested here but the unique characters will keep you wondering & guessing. Enjoy every moment!" Read the full review here.

@_forbookssake recommends Dread Wood by Jennifer Killick. "It was funny, enjoyable to read, and actually rather creepy. I really hope that we get more books, and that this becomes a series, because I would love to continue on a journey with these characters. This is definitely one of the best middle grade horrors that I’ve ever read." Read the full review here.

@AndOnSheReads recommends Shadowhall Academy: The Whispering Walls by Phil Hickes. "As always with Phil Hickes’s work, this was a spooky delight to read. He always excels at capturing the ambiance, and although I read most of this during a sunny train ride, I could feel the cold breath of ghosts breathing down my neck; see the autumn leaves crisping and falling; hear the tap tap tapping on the walls." Read the full review here.

The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic (Charming Cove Book 1) by Linsey Hall book cover

So here’s the deal—I’m a magical disaster. A witch from a family of witches, and the only one whose magic blows up in her face. Which is why I came up with my rules…

1. Never get involved with magic

2. If you must get involved, do not enter a competition to win the biggest magical fortune in England

3. And definitely don't fall for Callan Hawthorne, the sexy billionaire mage who you've hated for years

So how the heck do I end up in a situation that promises to break all those rules? It's the only way to save Seaside Spells, my family’s magical potion shop.

But it’s cool. When I go back home to Charming Cove—a village of ancient pubs and foul-mouthed familiars—I will totally ignore Witch Weekly’s Sexiest Man of the Year. I’ll win the competition, and if I’m lucky, I won’t turn myself into a toad in the process.

This'll be fine. It’ll all be fine.

Riiiight.

The Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic is a fun, frothy romantic comedy full of laughter, love, and magical hijinks. It’s the first in a series of stand alone romances set in the seaside village of Charming Cove.

Death by Miss Adventure by S.G. Tasz

Death by Miss Adventure by S.G. Tasz book cover

She’s a ghostly assassin. He’s a sharp-eyed Brit who can melt minds. When something goes amiss in the magical underworld, can they unravel a murderous puzzle before all hell breaks loose?

Adina Venture keeps her banter brisk, and her emotions hidden. Maintaining a careful barrier between herself and anyone she cares about, she stalks the lonely Las Vegas nights as a supernatural killer-for-hire. Her signature? Making her jobs look like bizarre accidents—or “misadventures,” as they are often called in the official death reports.

When an organization known for its brutal justice accuses her of slaying one of their own, little Miss Adventure knows she’s in big trouble, and the only way out of it is to prove she’s not guilty. There’s just one problem: Until they’re sure she’s not a killer (at least, not the one they’re looking for), she will be magically bound to Chief Inquisitor Levi Breitling, an unforgiving and unceremonious investigator who’s sure of her guilt. If she can’t convince him she’s innocent, he’ll verify it himself—by digging into her head and ripping out her memories one by one.

In the struggle to clear her name, the unlikely pair uncover clues that suggest the murder was part of a much bigger, potentially Armageddon-level plot. Now, the fate of Sin City hangs on whether Adina and Inquisitor Breitling can find the true culprit before a deadlier monster awakens. And the longer it takes to track down the killer, the tighter the chain between them seems to grow...

Death by Miss Adventure is the darkly humorous first book in the Death by Miss Adventure urban fantasy series. If you like twisty mysteries, witty banter, and slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with a dash of spice, then you’ll love S.G. Tasz’s award-winning novel. Unravel this snarky gothic mystery today!

Book 11 in the best-selling Christmas River Series is a cozy mystery as satisfying as a mug of hot apple cider on a golden autumn day...

It's October in Christmas River, and things in the central Oregon town are becoming downright bone-chilling.

When famed horror author Ashcroft Black takes up residence at an old hunting cabin rumored to be haunted, pie baker extraordinaire Cinnamon Peters and the rest of the small town are thrilled to have a bona-fide celebrity in their midst.

But when the characters of Ashcroft's horror novels literally start leaping to life in Christmas River, Cinnamon finds herself pulled into a perplexing mystery involving betrayal, crime, and a scandalous secret someone's willing to kill over.

Can Cin figure out the mystery and free the town of Ashcroft's horror for good? Or will she instead discover that fact is truly more horrifying than fiction?

Midnight in Christmas River is a Halloween-themed mystery and is the perfect read for spooky season. It's full of mischievous fun and heartwarming moments, and even features recipes from Cinnamon's own Halloween party menu. So cozy up with a mug of cider and get ready for many hours of enjoyable reading!

Reading Recommendations for Halloween

Need more suggestions for books to read this spooky season? Here's some reading recommendations for all ages from some of my book blogger buddies:

@Mehsi_Hime suggests Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis.
"All in all, I would HIGHLY recommend this spooky story collection to you all. If you love horror, scary stuff, disturbing bye bye and no thank you stories and love great art, this is perfect for you!" You can find the full book review at Twirling Book Princess.

@amloughrey suggests Veronica Twitch the Fabulous Witch by Erica-Jane Waters
"Ideal for Halloween and for girls that love mystery books. This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster cackling with delight and booing with despair at the ghastly Belinda Bullfrog." You can find the full review at Anita Loughrey's blog.

@SifaPoulton suggests It's Behind You by Kathryn Foxfield
"Nothing is scarier or more dangerous than people – though the claustrophobic tunnels and rocks falls did add an extra element of danger." You can find the full review at Sifa Elizabeth Reads.

@_forbookssake suggests House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
"The further in to the story we get, the darker and more dangerous things become." You can find the full review at For Books Sake.
