The June Challenges
As we move into the second half of the year, and our challenge, we'll be concentrating on individual social media platforms each month so we can get more specific with each one.
Our focus for June is on Facebook.
Facebook Business page
Facebook is probably the social media site I use that gets the least results. I'm not entirely sure why this is but I hope to improve my reach and engagement in the future.
John Hughes stated in a blog post he did earlier this year that:
350 million photos and 55 million status updates are posted each day – and there are over 60 million active business pages. In short, there’s simply too much content being published on Facebook, and ad visibility is becoming increasingly competitive as a result. For this reason, it’s more vital than ever to find ways you can stand out.
I've personally never tried using the paid ads feature on Facebook, preferring instead to work on organic reach.
So what are the things we can do to help leverage our page content?
In January 2021 Facebook did a redesign of Pages and the features available. Facebook did a blog post Introducing the New Pages Experience where you can find all the details about the update.
The biggest takeaway is the switch to focusing on engagement over likes. Your main goal for your Facebook page should therefore be to forget about likes and concentrate on building a community.
1) Optimise your Facebook account
The first thing to do is make sure to optimise your account. Facebook offers a variety of templates for business pages so make sure you're using the one best suited to your business. Changing your page template is easy. Just go to your settings on your page and click templates and tabs.
Having an on-brand cover for your page is a must. Did you know that you can use photo's or video's for your Facebook page cover? You can even create a slideshow. That's right, you can get super creative with this section!
Task 1:
Make sure you're using the right kind of template for your page.
Task 2:
Update your Facebook page cover. Also make sure that you have a good profile photo for your page, and make sure your about information is up to date.
2) Types of Content
In his blog post, Hughes also commented on the types of content to post to try on your page:
...you’ll want to make sure that you include lots of different kinds of posts. Try using images, videos, GIFs, polls, and text in your Facebook material – and consider posting User-Generated Content (UGC) when possible too. The most successful brands typically publish 4–5 posts per day, including a variety of content and media types.
Video definitely seems to be a medium that Facebook is pushing in recent years. This applies to both standard video content you upload to your page and Facebook live videos.
Task 3:
Make it a point to test a new type of post every week, then mark down the ones that users seem to enjoy.

I use Facebook as another way of engaging with readers but honestly it is the slowest one to grow, hardest one to get any interaction on and as such I tend to not really use it well. Perhaps from next week I might give it more thought and see what happens. Thanks for your post.
ReplyDeleteSo much great information is coming out of this series!! I don't put too much into Facebook and I've never used their ads. I heard horror stories from a few people who used the ads to sell stuff and ended up with Facebook charging them for extra stuff. I don't know that it's true but it's turned me off from using them for too much. Thanks for sharing this :)
